May 5th, 2010 meeting

Meeting Notes for May 5th, 2010

The meeting started at 6:00 with a special Cinco De Mayo Mexican food feast brought by Ben Hallert and served by Ben and Dave Petersen. Ole’!!!

Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Ben Hallert with V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 21 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Among the guests were Bill Barrett and his son Carson, Gary Anderson (flying a Jaibaru) and our newest member, Ray Morse (who is working to complete his Acro Duster 2 he started in 1978!). Welcome to everyone!

The next breakfast (and a lunch) will be held on Saturday, 15th of May, and it will be a YE event in conjunction with Chapter 1457. All pilots are requested to be here (Creswell Airport) by 9:00 AM for a safety briefing.  Dave Petersen has sent in the insurance info, and helped the other group send in theirs also.  See you there! Remember that our chapters YE flying event will be held on September 11th this year.  Mark your calendar for a much more pleasant event that the one that occurred in 2001.

A new Optima HD66 DLP video projector was purchased President Ben for much less than the amount in the budget. He will be purchasing cables and making a nice A/V control center at the side of the room. Several members volunteered to get a large white board screen put up, and make a projector mount that will come down from the ceiling when we use the unit. A nice demo was part of the entertainment at the end of the meeting, and it works great!!  Thanks Ben for all your efforts!

By the way, you can post news to the web site by emailing Ben at ben@hallert.net  and  request password to post. See if you can find an interesting picture or write up a fun event that everyone might enjoy. We also would like people to bring in pictures on DVD’s or CD’s or thumb drives, of their projects so that we can use our new projector and see the progress on our members airplane builds. This should help encourage anyone who is being stumped by a problem on their project, and remind them that they can do it!! Also, we are trying to find cheap internet access to allow us to use the system for other activities. Stay tuned!!

Daniel Cathy then spoke about the upcoming Oregon Air Tour that the OACAC puts on every other year. This year it will start in Cottage Grove on 7/17 and proceed for the next week around the state. Anyone who has been on one has had a great time, and this year it should be especially fun. He also mentioned that he has a friend who has for sale a Kolb Firestar (folding wing) with a Hirth engine for $9000 (floats are available for a bit more), and a Adventura Amphibian with a Rotax 582 for $15,500. Both planes have ballistic parachutes.

Our very hard working VP Bill Dewey mentioned that the patio cover was now complete and signed off by the county. He will lead a painting crew when the weather turns better. Thanks Bill!!

Longtime mechanic and friend to many Dave Payne has suffered a stroke and is recovering at a long term care facility in Eastern Oregon.  Get well soon Dave!!

Secretary Stout had asked if the 1457 Group has made a list yet of people who would be interested in a workshop with Rainbow Aviation to acquire a LSA Repairman’s Certificate. Since no one was available for a report, we are going to table this workshop until more interest is noted.

Our lovely airport manage Shelly Humble was in attendance and gave a report on the various grants that Creswell Airport has made and is expecting to receive in the near future.  The Memorial Area plans were discussed with her and she requested that we present a plan and an area where we would like this memorial to be established.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM and a very cool video of the life of Danny Grecko was shown. He was a one of a kind!!

April 2010 meeting notes

The meeting started at 6:00 with Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Dave Petersen’s (actually Melissa’s) wonderful Chili. We even had cookies and homemade brownies!!

Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM by President Ben Hallert with V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 21members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Welcome to everyone!

The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 17th of April. See you there!

Rod Johnson has the DVD from Van’s that shows the RV-7-9 empennage kit assembly. Give him a call if you want to borrow it.

Richard Jeffrey’s noted that he finally got one of him many Aeronca Champs in the air! And Bill Dewey finally has all his engine parts for his 172 and will be starting the re-build ASAP.

Ben Hallert mentioned that his car now has a backup video camera. No sure if he intends to install one in the Cherokee also.

A spirited discussion of Mole/Gopher/Vole removal techniques then ensued. The pesky critters are a real problem at both Jasper Ridge strip and Walker Field. The best methods appear to be CO using a small engine, Calcium Carbide to create Acetylene gas or shooting them in the early morning when they pop their head out.

The YE flying event will be held on September 11th this year. Mark your calendar for a much more pleasant event that the one that occurred in 2001.

The Short Wing Piper Club has thanked Dave Petersen and his wife for providing a very nice lunch for their fly in this last month. They also donated $25 for the use of the clubhouse.

The new video projector purchase was discussed. Ben will do some local (i.e. not via the internet) shopping for a projector that was recommended by an article that Walt brought in. Should be under $1000

You can post news to the web site by emailing Ben at ben@hallert.net and request password to post. See if you can find an interesting picture or write up a fun event that everyone might enjoy. Ben also spoke at the Kiwanis Club meeting about our clubs involvement with YE’s and asked them to contemplate getting involved with us in this activity.

Doug Kindred noted that local pilot Jimmy Dutton was sent aloft yesterday on the Space Shuttle.

Secretary Stout again asked if the 1457 Group has made a list yet of people who would be  interested in a workshop with Rainbow Aviation to acquire a LSA Repairman’s Certificate. Charlie and Bob will do so. Charlie also mentioned that 1457 would like to have an event with us in Creswell on 5/15 that includes a breakfast, lunch and a YE flying event. Several in the group had trepidation about the weather at this time of year, but everyone agreed that having the groups do and activity together was a great idea. Dave Petersen will send in the insurance info in case we can have a YE event at this date, and we will see what happens a few days before. Either way, it will be a fun lunch and breakfast.

Richard Jeffrey’s noted that it will be about 18 months before Creswell builds more hangars, but they are starting a list of people who would like them. They should be 40×40 boxes that rent for $200/ Mo.

The Memorial Area plans were next discussed. Rusty Bartel was not in attendance to give his report, but Bill Dewey has spoken to him. They looked at the Hilton Hotel memorial and like the style. They spoke with Shelly about a good place for this memorial, and a tentative location in the area between the driveways (with the flag) was identified.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.

March 3rd, 2010 meeting

Bill checks for bats in our belfry, but finds only sparrows that have somehow gotten in.

Membership renewal time is here!! Many members have renewed already. Have you??

The meeting started at 6:00 with wonderful new EAA signature Pulled Pork Sandwich with potato salad, beans and cookies. Thanks again to Ben and everyone that helped make this wonderful meal. I think that our hamburger lunches may have some competition in the future!

Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM by President Ben Hallert with V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 21members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. The guests at this meeting included Dean Hobenseifkin, the son of Creswell Hobby Fields namesake, and Dan Hardt, a past member who renewed at the meeting. Dan related his recent “broken crankshaft in his Lake Amphibian” incident, which was the stuff nightmares are made of. Thanks Dan and welcome to everyone!

The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 20th of  March. See you there!

Dave Eason asked if anyone had the top to an older style gaskolater. Doug Kindred responded that he may only need a thicker cork gasket.

Richard Jeffreys noted that he finally got one of him many Aeronca Champs on the gear.

Ben Hallert mentioned that his car now has (8!?) air horns and 2 compressors to run them. That should keep bambi off the grill!

The YE flying event will be held on September 11th this year. Mark your calendar for a much more pleasant event that the one that occurred in 2001.

Bill Dewey received $70 worth of credits to the EAA YE camp. He asked that everyone who also received these credits bring them in so that we can have a nice amount to give to a worthy young person that will help defray the expenses of attendance.

Daniel Cathy was unable to attend the meeting, but wrote in a few reports now reprinted here” “- since I was unable to finalize the completion of the parking area access, I requested Rusty and Dave to do the final rolling.  Had a chance to look at the finished product last Saturday and they did an excellent job.  The access is now rolled and has enough grass to handle any aircraft traffic into the parking area.  Kudos and thanks deserved by Rusty and Dave from the whole club.

Also- the Short Wing Piper Club has been invited to attend our March 20th breakfast and then will stay for a SWPC lunch followed by their monthly meeting.  Dave Petersen and his wife are on board for the scheduled lunch. (This was verified at the meeting)

The new video projector purchase was discussed. Walt and Doug went to Fryes in PDX, which helped them realize that we need to step up and buy a HD projector, not LED. Ben will do some shopping for a projector that was recommended by an article that Walt brought in. Should be under $1000

Bill Dewey has suggested that we install a low voltage lighting system on the new covered deck area, in order to better see the grill when we BBQ. He will purchase a inexpensive unit that should work well this summer. He also will be removing the old wood from the cover and painting the new wood with (???). (BTW, his “Volunteer of the Year for 2009” plaque was installed just after the meeting.)

Secretary Stout suggested that everyone look at the Chapter 31 web site for the “Octocopter” link. This is a fascinating new flying machine that seems

You can post news to the web site by emailing Ben at ben@hallert.net and requesting a password to post. See if you can find an interesting picture or write up a fun event that everyone might enjoy.

Doug Kindred noted that local pilot Jimmy Dutton will be the next Space Shuttle pilot.

Secretary Stout again asked for a show of hands as to who would be interested in a workshop with Rainbow Aviation to acquire a LSA Repairman’s Certificate. 4 Hands were raised. He asked for Bob Severns to check out Chapter 1452’s interest for this workshop. He will keep everyone posted on the progress.

The final order of business was the new Memorial Area plans. After much discussion, the club has decided that the memorial near the clubhouse needs to be moved to a better memorial area that honors a larger group of people. President Ben asked for volunteers to 1) come up with a design that honors both past EAA members and other people who have a special connection to flying and Hobby field, and 2) a group who will research and recommend the best site for this memorial. Reports will be made at the next meeting, and Ben will talk with Shelly to inform her of the clubs desire to move this memorial and establish this new memorial area.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.

January 6, 2010 meeting

The meeting started with our plentiful hamburger/hotdog/chips and drinks Bar-B-Q at 6:00. It is still only $3!!!

Meeting called to order at 7:09 PM by President Ben Hallert with V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 24 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. Guests and returning members in attendance included; Sid Voorhees, Tom Preuss, Bruce Lamont, Tony Horvath (and his wife Megan) and Larry Wickheiser and his wife. Welcome to all!

The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 16th of January. Continued raking crew activity (bring a rake!!) to help spread a load of loam that Daniel Cathy has provided. This should take seed and make a better taxiway this next spring when the grass grows up. After this breakfast we will meet at Tony Horvaths hangar at the north end of Creswell for a shop tour.

Randy Stout mentioned that local weather (at least local in the Jasper area) is provided online at: Http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KORSPRIN8

This is a great site- check it out!

The Christmas dinner was then discussed, but without past President and dinner coordinator Dave Petersen being in attendance, we will wait until next meeting for a report and list of ways to make it even more fun this year.

The new video projector purchase was discussed, with no further action to report at this meeting. Ben has been working on his www.starwarsuncut.com video clips. This should be a hoot when done. Check it out!  (ed: #1 and #2)

Dave Heisley, our water master and clubhouse manager has announced the annual cut off of water will occur just after the meeting, to be turned on before the next meeting. He also asked and was granted a rent reduction for the South Lane Modelers group, from $250 to $125 due to his efforts that offset some of this rental money. Thanks Dave!

Bill Dewey had suggested that we install a low voltage lighting system on the new covered deck area, in order to see better without needing another building permit. No further research has been accomplished to date on this project.

Speaking of Bill Dewey, we had our nomination for Volunteer of the Year award and his name was the unanimous choice. Congratulations Bill!!

The Challenger II belonging to George Oswald was the next topic of conversation. It was sold last week and so the clubhouse is now available for the next project. Several ideas were bounced around, but no one idea has risen to the top yet. Everyone keep looking around!

Daniel Cathy rose to mention that the Columbia River Chapter of the Short Wing Piper club will be at Creswell on the 20th of March, which coincides with our EAA breakfast.  He also spoke about the upcoming OACAC Oregon Air Tour starting on July 18th to the 23rd, and a as yet to be dated trip to Lake Chelan. He noted that the next OACAC meeting will be held at the Roseburg Airport in Dave Olsons hangar on the 23rd of January.

Last falls shop tour of Dale Young was wonderful, and he has now run the engine on the airframe. You can post news like this to the web site by emailing Ben at ben@hallert.net and requesting a password to post.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:18 PM.

November 4th, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our plentiful hamburger/hotdog/chips and drinks Bar-B-Q at 6:00. It is still only $3!!!

Meeting called to order at 7:02 PM by President Ben Hallert with V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 14 members and guests in attendance then were asked to talk about what new and exciting things were happening in their lives. This took more than a few minutes, but added greatly to everyone’s enjoyment. Who knew that adding a bit of Calcium Carbide and water to a gophers hole and lighting it could be such a fun!

The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 21th of November. Continued roof work on the new patio cover will be the order of the day along with a raking crew (bring a rake!!) who will spread a load of loam that Daniel Cathy will be providing. This should take seed and make a better taxiway this next spring when the grass grows up. Also, a few YE flights may take place just after this breakfast.

Bill Dewey thanked Louis Lyons for his donation of clear panels for the roof. He also recommended everyone be careful whenever using silicone seal on Polycarbonate roofing or aircraft windows, as certain types will ruin the material. He suggested that we install a low voltage lighting system on the new covered deck area, in order to see better without needing another building permit.

Rusty Bartel has created a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. It should be a great resource. Anyone who also wants to add a few tools to the list, contact Rusty with this info. Thanks!

The Challenger II belonging to George Oswald was the next topic of conversation. The club has decided that they would like to help the Oswalds sell it. Randy will store it in his hangar until the final decision or sale is made by the Oswalds. Daniel and Randy will be moving it at the next available time, but before the Christmas Party.

The Christmas dinner was the next topic. Dave Petersen has accepted the chairmanship of the event this year. His goal is to bring us a superb meal that includes Prime Rib or Salmon, potato, vegetables and rolls for $10 ($13 if you don’t bring a side dish). A-M will bring a dessert, and N-Z will bring a salad or side dish. The date will be December 5th, starting at 5:30. See you there!

The clubhouse was the meeting place for the OACAC 24th of October get together. Dave and Melinda Petersen made lunch for the crowd starting at 11:30 and raised $60 for the club for these efforts. Daniel Cathy rose to express thanks from the OACAC to the group and especially the Petersens for a great time. He also asked the club to consider the purchase of a large (50-60 cup) coffeemaker for events such as these, and several members offered to check out the price before we purchased one.

The Scott Henderson memorial was the next topic of discussion. Thanks was given to the several volunteers that helped place the memorial stone and benches. However, many members felt that we had not done enough to recognized deceased EAA chapter 31 members, and that we should have a nice area and procedure for doing so. After much discussion, it was decided to check out sites on the airport that would allow the creation of a more formal, garden type memorial area. Hopefully by this spring we will have a beautiful design plan to present to the airport manager that will honor both our members and Scott.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM.

September 2nd, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our normally great hamburger/hotdog Bar-B-Q at 6:00. A special ice cream bar dessert was the hit of the evening meal.

Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Ben Hallert, V.P. Bill Dewey was off traveling but Sec./Tres. Randy Stout was present. The 19 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. We hosted our young friend Alex Munsel again.

A suggestion to pressure wash the building and otherwise spruce it up at this time was made and this work was done by Walt Weischedel. Thanks!

David Dement noted that he has a couple of radios for sale. They are a KLX 99 and  KLS100GPS and a PS Engineering 1000 intercom. Call him if interested at 686-3188.

Brent Burgess then noted that the clothing with our logo is available at the back of the clubhouse in the locked cabinet. We will be bringing it out at each meeting in case anyone wants a new shirt or sweatshirt.

Daniel Cathy had suggested that the group purchase a 8’x1.5’ banner with “Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 31” spelled out for the next activity that the club gets involved with. We have one now purchased, 8’x18” for $141.

The next breakfast is in conjunction with the Young Eagle Flying event that will be held on Saturday, 12th of September.

Ken Schmidt has purchase the Bruce Curtis donated 6061 sheet aluminum in the clubhouse. He paid for it at the meeting. He also mentioned that you will need the new plastic pilot license by March 2010. Thanks Ken!

Bruce Curtis then noted that a 1/3 interest in a 1966 Citabria is available for $8500. Call him if you have the need for this plane at 485-2957.

Ben Hallert then mentioned the October 24th Arlington Sport Workshop that is being put on. It will feature electrical installation and sheet metal basics. It includes all the tools and will cost $289 for the 2 day course.

Randy sent Dave Heisely a nice a card expressing the clubs appreciation of all his work in the past, and asking if the club can do anything else for him at this time.  It was suggested that Rusty Bartel ofter to mow his grass at the same time that he mows the clubhouse grass.

Rusty Bartel also suggested that we have a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. Next meeting, everyone should be prepared to write down the tools that you are willing to share or bring with you to help. It should be a great resource.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 and a field day to clean the clubhouse commenced. Everyone pitched in and in no time the clubhouse was in great shape for the YE event.

Aug 13

August 5th, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our normally great hamburger/hotdog/  Bar-B-Q at 6:00.

Meeting called to order at 7:08 PM by V.P. Bill Dewey. President Ben Hallert had a business obligation and was unable to attend. Sec./Tres. Randy Stout was also present. The 12 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. We hosted 2 guests, Rich and Rollie. Welcome!

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a report on the construction progress for the new 12×16 cover over the BBQ area on the clubhouse deck. Bill said that he will need to pull a permit (at a cost of $150) and that the cover has been engineered (his daughter provided help on this) to handle a snow load of 25 lbs/sqFt. He intends to use 2×12’s in addition to the 2×8’s already up. He also still baffled and pleased that someone has delivered a nice number of acrylic panels for the project. Thanks to whoever has been so generous. Bill made up a total budget of $550. A motion was made to approve this budget by Dave Peterson, 2nd ed by Bruce Curtis and unanimously approved. Bill will get the permit and start on the project next month. A suggestion to pressure wash the building and otherwise spruce it up at this time was also made.

Ben was unable to report on his further research into the new projection TV system that will use our existing pull down screen. He will have info at the next meeting.

Daniel Cathy then spoke about the breakfast and lunch we provided at the Oregon Aviation Museum at Cottage Grove. The volunteers were fantastic, and many people rose to the occasion. He especially thanked Dave and Melinda Peterson, and Bill Dewey, but also thanked everyone else involved. He received nothing but praise from the OACAC and the Luscombe group.  He suggested that the group purchase a 8’x1.5’ banner with “Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 31” spelled out for the next activity that the club gets involved with. Dave Petersen then presented the club $192, profit made at the breakfast. The next breakfast is on the 15th of  August.

The Challenger II. was the next topic of discussion. People still want to know if the chapter was liable if we built it and sold it. It was decided to have Randy ask EAA national’s legal department. He has yet to do so. Also, when can it get it LSA designation- now or only after it is airworthy. Most believe that the LSA is really an airworthiness certificate, so obviously it needs to be airworthy for this to happen. As of now, the club has decided that any work that is accomplished will be on non-essential parts of the plane until these liability matters are settled.

Ken Schmidt has purchase the Bruce Curtis donated 6061 sheet aluminum in the clubhouse. He is going to look it over carefully then come up with a fair price.

President Ben and V.P. Bill along with several other pilots will be flying Young Eagles on the 12th of September. Volunteers would be nice to help with the logistics.

Daniel Cathy then noted that our very nice neighbor and club member Dave Heisley has been ill. He has always been such a club supporter, mowing the grass and providing water, that several members asked if we can do anything at this time to help him. It was suggested that Rusty Bartel mow his grass at the same time that he mows the clubhouse grass. It was also suggested that Randy send Dave a nice card expressing our appreciation of all his work in the past, and asking if the club can do anything else for him at this time.

Rusty Bartel also suggested that we have a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. Next meeting, everyone be prepared to write down the tools that you are willing to share or bring with you to help. It should be a great resource.

Randy then spoke briefly about the Stearman Fly-In just held in Cottage Grove, and the Boeing 40 mailplane that was in attendance. A Wonderful time was had by everyone.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 and a brief workshop  was held to determine what project that the group will be working on with the Challenger II

Meeting called to order at 7:08 PM by President Ben Hallert. V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout were also present. The 16 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. One of the guests joined the club, so welcome next month Chris Winslow! We also had as a guest a very nice young man, Alex Munsel, a 16 yr. old student of Dorothy Schick, who made a good impression on everyone.

Tom Cunningham passed around a flyer advertising his brothers Hurricane Ultralight, located in Jano (Antelope Valley) Call Tom for more info at 541-895-2745.

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a report on the construction progress for the new 12×16 cover over the BBQ area on the clubhouse deck. Bill said that he will need to pull a permit (at a cost of $150) and that the cover needs to be engineered (his daughter is going to help on this) to handle a snow load of 25 lbs/sqFt. He also is baffled and pleased that someone has delivered a nice number of acrylic panels for the project. Thanks to whoever has been so generous. Bill will make up a total budget and get it approved before starting on the project next month.

Secretary Randy Stout noted that the clubhouse experienced a power failure earlier in the week when an EPUD fuse blew. We lost the frozen items and some of the cold items in the Fridges, but most were ready to go anyway. Ben will restock with fresh stuff.

Ben reported on his research into the new projection TV system that will use our existing pull down screen. He needs to be comfortable that the lumens put out by a less expensive system will adequately project a good picture for the audience. He will continue with his research for a local supplier in case it needs to be returned if it doesn’t put out enough lumens.

President Ben then spoke about the next breakfast to be held, an event where chapter 31 will be serving breakfast and lunch at the Oregon Aviation Museum at Cottage Grove. A call for volunteers was made, and many people rose to the occasion. This next breakfast/lunch is on the 18th of July. Please bring a large ice chest if you have one. Start of breakfast is 8:00-8:30 until 10:00, and lunch starts at 12:00 until 2:00. Dinner will be provided by others and is a pulled pork dinner for $15

The Challenger II. was the next topic of discussion. Several people wanted to know if the chapter was liable if we built it and sold it. It was decided to have Randy ask EAA national’s legal department. Also, when can it get it LSA designation- now or only after it is airworthy. Ken Schmidt has purchase the Bruce Curtis donated 6061 sheet aluminum in the clubhouse. He is going to look it over carefully then come up with a fair price.

President Ben and V.P. Bill will be flying 4 Young Eagles next week. Volunteers would be nice to help with the logistics.

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a quick report on the Hood River Museum Tour and noted that they will be having their fly-in on 9/11 to 9/13 of this year. He said that 200 antique and 300 regular aircraft were in attendance last year. He also noted that next weekend (starting on the 8th) will be the Arlington Fly-In for EAA.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 and a brief workshop  was held to determine what project that the group will be working on with the Challenger II
