January 2007 Minutes

January 3rd, 2006 Meeting
The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.
Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by President Dave Petersen with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 22 members and guests were in attendance.
Member and clubhouse manager Dave Heisley reminded the club that the water will be turned off following the meeting, to be turned back on before the next meeting in February. This method keeps Dave’s water rights solid. Thanks for the water each year!!
Ex-President Bruce Curtis reminded everyone about the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly, and the date this month will be 1/13/07.
The Secretary/Treasurer then reminded the group that dues for 2007 are now due. Please send your checks to 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478 payable to EAA Chapter 31, or just see Randy at the meeting.
New member Bill Dewey, a retired A+P and Instructor is considering getting a project (RV-12?) and allowing the group to work on it as a club. If this occurs, it will be a real attention getter for people who may want to learn to build or fly, and a real help to the club. We will report as this exciting project develops.
It was noted with sadness that Clyde Blakely passed away last week. Clyde was a fixture at Walker Field and had a Fleet Model 2 that he flew until a few years back. A wonderful, humble man who always had a smile and a good word when you flew in for a visit. Thanks for the great memories Clyde!
Phil Writer then gave a quick Aircoupe report. He has the plane in his garage now. Bill Robinet has purchased it and with the help of those interested in forming a flying club, will get it back in the air. It is a 415C model, so it is LSA capable. Cost will be $1000 for each member, with a target of $40/hr wet to fly the bird. 6 People have expressed and interest in joining the club. Further details as they firm up.
Dave Petersen then rose to present a vision for 2007 club activities. As this is Chapter 31’s 50th anniversary, he suggested we have a well organized fly-in in September. He would like to see us fly 50 YE’s this year. He also wants to see name tags for all members, and suggested that we have a group printed without names so that we can add them as new members arrive with a Brother printer unit. John Kuehl then suggested we have some printed with a dark area for the names, and he would use his pantograph to etch the names on.
Dave also wants to see the Web site updated weekly with an event calendar, and will be working with Ben during the upcoming Breakfast to make this a reality. He asked Phil Writer, our newsletter editor to send all the info he receives in newsletter form to EAA31@msn.com to be posted by our webmaster. This will save Phil time and not duplicate efforts. Also, we will be assured that some form of newsletter will be sent out each month.
Dave suggested we set the date next month for the Christmas dinner and Fly-In, and asked for volunteers to form comities for each. Doug Kindred volunteered to bring in the Christmas tree with lights for the next dinner.
A guest then rose to address the club. Steve Berube (485-1535) flynsteve@comcast.net spoke about starting a flying club in our area. He comes from another very successful flying club and would like to duplicate that model here. The basic premise is to purchase a 172 or 182 and charge $500 and $800 respectively for membership, then $63 and $83 per hour respectively for air time. Dues are $85 per month, with your first hour flying free. If you want to see an active club that is using this model, go to t-craft.org and check it out. Give Steve a call if you are interested.
Dave Petersen was then unanimously voted our “Volunteer of the Year” for all his hard work in 2006. His name will be put on a badge and kept on the wall with all the other winners from years past. Thanks for all your time and effort Dave!
There being no other business, the group watched a DVD on the alternative 912 engine installations, including a Zenair 601XL with a Subaru conversion, and a KR with a VW based engine installation. Very well made and part of the “Homebuilt Help” series of DVD’s
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15PM

November 2006 Minutes

November 1st, 2006 Meeting

The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.

The first order of business was a President-introduction where the Pres went around the room and tried to remember the names and projects of each member.

Well done Bruce!!

Meeting called to order at 7:02 PM by President Bruce Curtis with VP Dave

Petersen and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 18 members and guests

Bruce Curtis thanked Daniel Cathy for his efforts to save the large picture of the group taken in 1997 during a meeting on the 40

th anniversary of the club. This nice picture will now hang proudly in the clubhouse along with the (Hopefully!) 50th anniversary picture to be taken this coming summer.

President Bruce reminded everyone about the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly, and the date this month will be 11/11.

It was then noted (I forgot by whom) that the FAA will be holding a GA meeting at LCC at the airport (the old United office) to discuss the Master Plan for GA at the airport. It will happen on Tuesday the 7

th of November.

Steve Aveldson then reminded the group that he has a set of Hummel Bird plans and CD to be sold for $120. He also brought some Echelon headsets, which he is willing to part with very cheaply!

Being in a Buy/Sell spot, Richard Jeffreys mentioned that he has a set of PK1500 floats for sale (shaped somewhat like a Banana due to overrunning the water when landing) for $2000 and a C-85-F complete with Stromberg carburetor for $1500. He also has a 150HP Franklin without 3 cylinders for sale for $1000 OBO. He also mentioned that a small rattlesnake was found in Shelly’s office. No mention of why it stopped by, but presumably looking for a Sectional as it was certainly lost.

Doug Kindred then rose to give a Copperstate Fly-In report. Weather was very windy, and several fires to the south probably stopped many who might have otherwise attended, but overall it was well attended anyway. Many LSA manufactures present with the average price being about $80,000 for a fully glass cockpit equipped airplane. Most were powered with Rotax and Jaibaru engines and were considered by most in attendance to be a great value. It was held this year at Casa Grande, which is problematic due to the normal windy conditions.

A quick report on George Oswald’s off airport landing in his Challenger in a grass field near W. 11

th Ave. He apparently lost power on the first flight while heading to Creswell. Significant damage to the bird, but the old bird is fine and back at it that same day. Never a cop when you need one, but there were 3 within minutes during this fender-bender.

The subject of election of officers was the next order of business. The floor was opened for other nominations. There being only one (see the note below), it was moved by Daniel Cathy and seconded by Mat Northway to close nominations.

Passed unanimously. Since Ben Hallert was not in attendance, it gave everyone ample opportunity to roast him in his absence. When well done, he was unanimously chosen as our new VP. Phil Writer had asked to have his name added to the slate for Treasurer, but by not being in attendance and being unable to run a dirty campaign (as his opponent most certainly did), the current Treasurer was re-elected unanimously.

Bruce Curtis then spoke about the upcoming Christmas party scheduled for December 9

th at 6:00PM at the clubhouse. He noted that we will be using the same format as the very successful party last year. (Pot Luck-with the main course furnished by EAA-which will be your choice of either prime rib or salmon and cost $7 if you bring a dish and $10 if you don’t) He also is looking into a local school club we can pay to help with the serving and set-up/clean-up. ($100-$200?) He will look into finding these servers as none has yet been identified. It was also suggested that we have an auction again, and most in attendance thought that was a good idea.

Remember! Last name from A-M- Bring a Side Dish , N-Z- Bring a Dessert. (or vice versa if you insist!!) Either way, come and have a great time! John Kuehl, Dave Petersen and Steve Aveldson have volunteered to man a phone tree to call each member to confirm attendance so we can get the right about of each entrée. We will also be serving potatoes and rolls and beverages, so you only need bring your side dish or dessert and an appetite. SEE YOU THERE!!

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:26PM

Respectfully submitted,

Randy Stout, Secretary/Treasurer

October 2006 Minutes

October 4th, 2006 Meeting

The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.

The first order of business was a self-introduction where the mic was passed and the members and guests took turns introducing themselves. Our dear friend and club member Steve Kretsinger was in attendance and almost none the worse for wear from his near death experience (Medical not airplane related) during the Oregon Air Tour this summer. Welcome Back Steve!!!

Meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Bruce Curtis with VP Dave Petersen and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 29 members and guests

Bruce Curtis thanked Dave Petersen for his huge effort to put on the EAA Chapter 31 Fly-In and Air show on September 9

th and 10th. Dave thanked Dave Heisley for his help, and all the pilots who flew the 30 Young Eagles, especially Brent Burgess and Jack Wigamore. We were reminded during the event why there is an age limit of 8 years old for flyers.

President Bruce reminded everyone about the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly, and the date this month will be 10/14.

Dave Petersen then let the group know that, unless an objection was heard, the present cafeteria tables (which we have grown to loath) will be donated to the Chamber of Commerce. No objections were noted. He also said that the Creswell Airport will re-open the runway on Thursday.

Ben Hallert gave a quick web cam report. Due to the lack of action in this area, Ben has qualified to become an officer of the club! He has been nominated to the position of Vice President. The floor was opened to any other nominations, but no one could match Ben’s record, so the crowd fell silent. Should anyone fall short during the rest of the month, they can be nominated at the November meeting. See you there!

Phil Writer rose to speak about Audrey Faire, the woman who died in an aircraft accident after his fly-in at Crow Mag airport. He made a motion that the club donate some money to help with the formation of the Audrey Faire Dog Park in Florence. It was seconded by Don Bowers. Many of the members have felt that they would like to be a part of this gift, so it was decided to make this donation.

Bruce Curtis then spoke about the upcoming Christmas party. He suggested that we use the same format as the very successful party last year. (Pot Luck except the main course which will be either prime rib or salmon and cost about $6 if you bring a dish and $10 if you don’t) He also suggested that the club pay some local school kids a fee ($100-$200?) for serving and set-up/clean-up. He will look into finding these servers. It was also suggested that we have an auction again, and most in attendance thought that was a good idea.

Secretary Stout then displayed embroidered patches that the club has for sale for $10 and decals for $5. A few were sold after the meeting.

Bruce gave an Aircoupe report. Seems that the documentation of prior repairs/337’s and inspections has not been quite a thorough as expected and has caused a snag in the continued re-building of the plane. Hopefully this will be sorted out soon, or the club may have to take on a different project. Bruce and Ken will be meeting with an IA to discuss the matter in full detail.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:110PM

Respectfully submitted,

Randy Stout, Secretary/Treasurer

July 5th, 2006 Meeting

The meeting started with our normal hamburger/hotdog Bar-B-Q party provided (man I miss that Figero’s Pizza)

The first order of business was a self-introduction where the mic was passed and the members and guests took turns introducing themselves. New members and guests included George Coulter (who has 16,000 hours flying in Alaska-tell me he doesn’t have a good story or two) and Marlin Taylor who has part of a Mooney. Welcome to you both! Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM by President Bruce Curtis with VP Dave Peterson absent due to surgery and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 24 members and guests

Bob Severns asked to address the group about his encounter with Phil Groshong at the Eugene Airport recently. According to Bob, Phil made an appearance at Bob’s hangar and asked him if he was doing maintenance on an aircraft in his hangar. Apparently, Phil believes that in his capacity as General Aviation Manager at KEUG, his job is to halt any maintenance that is being done by anyone but the FBO. This appears to be in conflict with FAR’s, and Bob, Michale Narkin and others have taken exception to this action. Daniel Cathy suggested that the club write a letter to the City Manager requesting a clarification of their policy in this matter. Michael was asked to write it and forward it to Bruce for his approval.

Randy Stout asked just once more for those who haven’t paid dues for 2006 to do so now. A list was available for those who have forgotten if they have paid or not. If your name is on this list, bring it in or send it to EAA Chapter 31 at 1315 Inglewood Ave., Eugene, OR 97401 Thanks to all who have paid to date!

Ben Hallert gave a quick web cam report. Seems that the signal from the FBO is so weak that we can’t make our connection work. The motion to spend up to $300 per year for DSL appears to be untenable, as no service was available for this price. It was then recommended that Ben ask Dorthy Shick to put a booster on her hangar so that we could get the signal from the FBO. Ben will look into getting this done and report back at the next meeting.

President and newsletter editor Bruce Curtis thanked Phil Writer for helping get the newsletter out this month. Send him articles, items for sale etc. to eaa31@msn.com. Thanks Phil!

Past President Brent Burgess was again thanked for purchasing some additional chairs and tables recently. They were in the clubhouse this month if you got a chance to see them. Thanks Brent!

Daniel Cathey mentioned that the OACAC Oregon Air Tour and annual meeting will be at Cottage Grove this year on July 15th. Some of the stops on the tour will be Florence, Gold Beach, Hoopa Indian reservation, Yreka (Blue goose train).

Gary Ludeke noted that the McMinnville fly in this year will be June 25th

Ken Schmidt gave a report on the progress on the Ercoupe that the club is restoring. The wings are mostly done at this point. Work will progress as people step forward.

Entertainment for the evening consisted of everyone helping on the Ercoupe and much discussion regarding the A+P problem and hangar lease issues at KEUG.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:13PM

Respectfully submitted,

Randy Stout, Secretary/Treasurer
