EAA31 Breakfast and work party

This Saturday Nov 18th after our Monthly breakfast we will begin work on our shiny new floor.  Here’s what we will need to do:

Move EVERYTHING to the back half of the hangar.

Preparation is everything.

Thoroughly clean the floor:  1st vac, then scrub/clean with cleaner, then etch with TSP (TriSodiumPhosphate), then rinse, then patch, where needed, with grout.

We will need to keep the place well heated to get good bonding for the paint, so the mechanical timer switches will need to be temporarily replaced with regular switches.

Then, on Sunday the 19th at 2:30 we can do the fun part.  Actually roll on the paint.

We already have 6 Gallons of BEHR one part epoxy paint (silver gray).  Cleaner, TSP, Mop, bucket, water, Sandpaper, patching grout, Paint roller, Pan, Cutting in brushes, etc.

We can decide on Saturday whether we want to do the 2nd half of the floor on the following weekend (Thanksgiving week end) OR on Dec 2nd (The Joint Christmas Party at John Stahrs date)

Status of Rusty Bartel’s Cessna 150

It’s been a long time coming but Rusty’s C-150 is nearly ready for flight! Bill Dewey has been diligently working on installing the freshly overhauled engine obtained from John Kuehl. The engine is virtually equivalent to new with four new cylinders and other new parts. The engine looks beautiful! It’s going to be a great running and great flying aircraft! The down side is that the costs incurred in the engine rebuild require that Rusty ask a selling price commensurate with the condition of the airplane with its new engine. My investigation of the value of this airplane, using aircraft blue book sources, is $25,000. The blue book value is actually more like $27,000 but that would be with an up-to-date nav/comm radio. This airplane has an out-of-date nav/comm that really should be replaced. The airplane can be flown with the current radio but it is limited to 360 comm channels while all modern radios have 720 channel capability. The current radio would not be able use all frequencies and, for example, would not receive the Creswell AWOS, the KEUG ATIS or be able to communicate on the Independence airport CTAF/Unicom of 122.975 MHz.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing has been formally done to establish the flying club that we of Chapter 31 have been trying to see materialize. Due to the higher value of the airplane, if the club still wants to purchase this airplane, it will need to either find more charter members or come up with a plan to finance the aircraft by coming up with an initial fee and monthly dues that will not only cover all the normal expenses of owning and operating the airplane but also be able to cover monthly finance payments. Rusty and his wife, Beth, are anxious to recoup some of the costs incurred due to the unexpected work necessary to overhaul the engine. The plan will be to put the aircraft up for sale nationally as soon as it is test flown and it is established that all is well with the engine and airframe. I am suggesting that the “club” have the first right of refusal if a buyer is found. Therefore, if there is serious interest, the club needs to be able to take financial action, possibly before the end of the year. Bill Dewey and I will be at this Saturday’s EAA breakfast and would be happy to answer questions and show you the airplane in its current state.

Meeting Minutes from the 11/1/2017 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, November 1st , 2017

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM without our wonderful hosts Virgil and Bridget Pratt but with John and Ruth Kuehl stepping up again. We had Chili Dogs with salad, chips, drinks and Brownies and cookies for desert for only $5? Thanks again to. See you at the next dinner/meeting!!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:57 PM. President John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 15 members and guests in attendance. The guests included J. Thorpe, who is hanging a new Superior engine on his Great Lakes. Also, past member Bob Severns (who has done 4 engine rebuilds this year) was also in attendance. Welcome to you both!!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, November 18th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal! Hang around after the meal and we will clean and prep the floor for new paint. The plan is to paint it with rollers on the 19th at 2:30PM, but Walt Weischedel thought it may not be dry enough by then. John will assess the situation and report back after the cleaning.

President Kuehl asked an election committee report. Gary Ludeke has agreed to be the VP for the next 2 years and help John as he remains President. In the event that it becomes too much for John, Gary will step into the Presidency and John will step back into Vice Presidency. A creative way to solve the eternal leadership problem most clubs face yearly. Thanks to both of you for your service!!

Gary Ludeke gave an RV-3 update. The Wright Body Shop is now painting the airplane at cost. The club will write them a check for $500 to cover these costs. We still plan to completely assemble and deliver it to the OAHS Museum in CG this spring. It will be all white with some decals.

Walter Weischedel has put out mouse bait and it appears to be very effective.

It was noted that we should all go to WWW.atcnotforsale.com and register our opinion about keeping the ATC out of private hands.

The Christmas party was the next topic of conversation. Subject to not having a joint Christmas party with Chapter 1457 (which is not certain yet), the club decided to have the party at the clubhouse in Creswell on December 9th at 6:00PM. All the details (who brings what, cost, menu etc.) will be detailed in upcoming emails from John. This dinner will be in place of the normal December meeting.

Gary Ludeke also reported on a conversation he had with the Principle at Creswell High School (whose name I did not get) about starting an aviation program there. Gary indicated his willingness to speak to groups of students, as a few other members will also. More details on this as it develops.

Bill Dewey is beginning to hang the rebuilt engine on the flying clubs C-150, and the issue with torqueing the nuts on the mounting bracket.

With no other new or old business, Pres. John began to show various instruction videos about airplane maintenance and repair provided by EAA national. The effects of ACF-50 and CorrosionX were compared and highly recommended. The use of bonding brushes to keep connections free of contamination, the use of Grip Lock Ties, which are zip ties with a rubber/silicone liner and have a quick release for reuse. These topics along with Jobi Cell phone holders, Blue tooth triggers, Road Microphones, Light pads, Oliclip lens’, time lapse apps for the cell phone, how to build a hot wire tool, the types of tin snips available and how to use them and the Nord Lock Wedge washer were all viewed and appreciated.
