EAA 31 May 2nd 2018 Meeting
We have lots of good stuff to cover this month.
Bill Dewey will surprise us with fine food from whatever Costco has on special.
John Kuehl will give a short report from what he learned at EAA leadership training in Oshkosh last month.
The new owners of Eugene Skydivers (Mark & Africa) will introduce themselves and stress what good neighbors they intend to be at Hobby Field.
Our Main Speaker will be our own EAA 31 member Jim Origlisso, wing leader for Angel Flight West. Jim will share his experiences in that organization; What it does and how it works. For those not familiar with AFW, it is a non-profit made up of pilots who volunteer their time, fuel, and aircraft to provide air transportation to those in need. Jim has flown over 80 missions since joining AFW in 2012. This should be very interesting.
Time permitting – May Chapter Video Magazine.
Wed May 2nd, Dinner 6:00 PM $8.00. Meeting 7:00 PM at Creswell Airport, Hobby Field 77S. 538 feet above mean sea level. Off I5 at Creswell Oregon.
Bring a friend!

Chapter 31 in May Issue of Sport Aviation!
For those of you that are national EAA members, be sure to check out Lauran Paine’s “Plane Talk column. Chapter 31 is recognized for our participation in the Young Eagles program.
Also, for those of you who haven’t heard, Eugene Skydivers is now under new management. I stopped by their operation and invited the new owners (Mark and Africa) to our May meeting. They plan to attend so be sure to introduce yourselves to them and make them feel welcome.

BREAKFAST REMINDER
This is a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday, April 21 is our breakfast at the clubhouse. It’s shaping up to be a great weekend for flying so we may have a number of additional people (Walt, please bring more eggs than usual – Thanks!). Chapter 1457 definitely plans to have some people come as it is their first official fly-out of the season. See you there!

Meeting Minutes for the 4/4/2018 meeting
EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, April 4th, 2018
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our hosts John and Ruth Kuehl providing a great “fix your own hard or soft Taco” meal with all the trimmings and candy and/or Ice Cream for desert along with drinks for only $8! Thanks Ruth and John!! Bill Dewey has offered to handle the food for the next meeting. Wait for further notifications as to what we are sure to enjoy in a month! See you at the next dinner/meeting!!
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:55 PM. President John Kuehl, V.P. Gary Ludeke and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 19 members and guests in attendance.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, April 21st. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal! President John will not be here as he is attending the leadership conference at EAA national on that date.
Bill Dewey noted that their flying club airplane (a C-150) is nearly done and ready to go. There is just a bit of paperwork left. Contact him if you are interested. 541-345-0480
Secretary Stout then reminded the group about name tags. Everyone in attendance should have their name tag on, just to make sure we get to know each other better. From now on, anyone without a name tag (except for those who have not gotten one yet) prominently displayed will be charged $1. At the end of the year, the $1 fine jar will be given away at the Christmas party. Sound like fun!
With no other new or old business, Pres. John introduced our speaker for the evening, Gary Ludeke. Gary gave a very thorough slide presentation about the various airspaces and their visibility, tower contact and cloud clearance requirements. It was a good refresher for all of us who will be getting their BFR’s in the near future. Thanks Gary!
We then watched a vintage “Andy Griffith Show” episode, where Aunt Bea learns to fly (a 172). Very nostalgic and entertaining.
President John then decided that there was enough time to present the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, which we all enjoyed.
There being no other business, President John then adjourned at 8:27
PM
respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Jim Showker – Sad News!
I just learned that Jim Showker passed away from liver cancer yesterday (3/30/18).
Some of you may remember Jim from the presentation he gave to our chapter in 2014 on his rebuild of an Aeroprakt A26. Jim bought a damaged twin-engine version of this aircraft and converted it to the single-engine model! He did a great job on a very difficult project. The airplane was and is still based at Daniels Field. I met Jim after he called me and asked if I would be willing to give him the required flight training for his Sport Pilot License in his Aeroprakt. Jim was already an experienced ultralight pilot and he very quickly picked up the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Sport Pilot. We began his training on May 2, 2014. I signed him off for the FAA Practical Test on July 1, 2014!
I heard that Jim made his last flight just one week ago. He was weak, but still a very capable pilot. He will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him, and especially those of us who flew with him!
