Near CFIT in IMC – caught on video

Some people videoed a trip into inadvertent IMC while scud running in a Bonanza.  They HIT something…  and amazing lived to talk about it.

Available on YouTube directly as well.  Yikes!  Fly safe, folks!  This reiterates the importance of proper ADM for sure, as the PIC in this video did not appear to exercise his.

October 7th, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our wonderful hamburger/hotdog/chili Bar-B-Q at 6:00. If you don’t make it for this part of the meeting, your just missing a bunch of fun!

Meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Ben Hallert, V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout were also present. The 24 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. Guests included Ed Biercut (?) and John Kelly.

Steve Wolf of Wolf Aircraft spoke about his Turbo-Prop Lancair, which he had just flown in a low pass over the clubhouse prior to the meeting. He and Kathy will be moving to Florida later this month, so he built it to commute to see her folks back in Oregon. He spent several minutes entertaining the group with stories of his Lancair and other fun projects that he had done while working in Creswell. Steve will be missed!!

Steve’s very good right arm man, Tony Horvath, will remain in the Eugene area. He has started his own fabrication company, Specialty Aero, LLC in Creswell (541-729-9832) (flyboyEAA@aol.com) He will be specializing in instrument panels using his 3 axis CNC machine. He brought in an example of his work, and it is very good. If you are building a RV or other homebuilt, see him before you frustrate yourself trying to build your own.

David Dement still has his radio and intercom for sale. They are a KLS100GPS and a PS Engineering 1000 intercom. Call him if interested at 686-3188.

Daniel Cathy had suggested that the group purchase a 8’x1.5’ banner with “Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 31” spelled out for the next activity that the club gets involved with. Newest member Blandon Roy purchased it, an 8’x18” for $141 and it was shown to the group for the first time. Thanks Blandon!

A Young Eagle report was then given by Dave Petersen. We flew 68 YE’s  and made a $41 profit (which he turned over to the Sec/Treas). Randy spoke about his very short flight due to an oil cap loosening, and some discussion of the logistics for next years event ensued. The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, 17th of October. Roof work on the new patio cover will be the order of the day after the breakfast sinks in a bit.

Ben Hallert then mentioned the October 24th Arlington Sport Workshop. It will feature electrical installation and sheet metal basics. It includes all the tools and will cost $289 for the 2 day course. He (or was it Daniel Cathy) also noted a AOPA Safety Seminar on October 19th at 7:00 PM at the Red Lion here in Eugene.

Rusty Bartel had suggested that we have a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. A sheet of paper was passed out and everyone wrote down the tools that you are willing to share or bring with you to help. If you think of a few that you haven’t told Rusty about, let him know.  It should be a great resource. Thanks!

Thanks was also given to Gary Ludeke for his loan to the club on the RV construction series of VCR cassettes.

The Challenger II belonging to George Oswald was the next topic of conversation. The club moved (Dave Petersen) and 2nd ed (John Kuehl) and voted unanimously with the decision that there is not enough interest in rebuilding the aircraft, and the club would like to help the Oswalds sell it. Randy will call EAA national and talk with them about transferring the LSA paperwork to a third party. He will also call the Oswalds and confirm their interest in selling or moving the aircraft.

The Christmas dinner was the next topic. Dave Petersen was asked, and accepted, the chairmanship of the event this year. His goal is to bring us a superb meal that includes Prime Rib or Salmon, potato, vegetables and rolls for $10. A-M will bring a dessert, and N-Z will bring a salad or side dish. The tentative date (to be confirmed at the November meeting) will be December 5th, with the 12th as another possibility.

V.P. Bill Dewey spoke about the trials and tribulations with the county planners in obtaining a building permit for the patio cover. He ended up only spending $120 for the permit, a far cry from the $400 they wanted originally. Good work Bill!!

It was noted with sadness the passing of another long time member, Bill Cowan. His funeral was on Thursday, the 8th of October. He will be remembered always for his sense of humor and smile. He served the club well as the Secretary/Treasurer for a number of years. Tail winds to you always-good friend!

The clubhouse will be the meeting place for the OACAC 24th of October get together. Dave Petersen has offered to make lunch for the crowd starting at 11:30. See you there!

Another call for volunteers who will share a bit of time and have the group over to their workshop after a breakfast this winter. It is a great time to see how other folks are doing on their projects and get a bit of fire back into yours! Raise your hand at the next meeting and we will all be better for it!

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.

September 2nd, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our normally great hamburger/hotdog Bar-B-Q at 6:00. A special ice cream bar dessert was the hit of the evening meal.

Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Ben Hallert, V.P. Bill Dewey was off traveling but Sec./Tres. Randy Stout was present. The 19 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. We hosted our young friend Alex Munsel again.

A suggestion to pressure wash the building and otherwise spruce it up at this time was made and this work was done by Walt Weischedel. Thanks!

David Dement noted that he has a couple of radios for sale. They are a KLX 99 and  KLS100GPS and a PS Engineering 1000 intercom. Call him if interested at 686-3188.

Brent Burgess then noted that the clothing with our logo is available at the back of the clubhouse in the locked cabinet. We will be bringing it out at each meeting in case anyone wants a new shirt or sweatshirt.

Daniel Cathy had suggested that the group purchase a 8’x1.5’ banner with “Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 31” spelled out for the next activity that the club gets involved with. We have one now purchased, 8’x18” for $141.

The next breakfast is in conjunction with the Young Eagle Flying event that will be held on Saturday, 12th of September.

Ken Schmidt has purchase the Bruce Curtis donated 6061 sheet aluminum in the clubhouse. He paid for it at the meeting. He also mentioned that you will need the new plastic pilot license by March 2010. Thanks Ken!

Bruce Curtis then noted that a 1/3 interest in a 1966 Citabria is available for $8500. Call him if you have the need for this plane at 485-2957.

Ben Hallert then mentioned the October 24th Arlington Sport Workshop that is being put on. It will feature electrical installation and sheet metal basics. It includes all the tools and will cost $289 for the 2 day course.

Randy sent Dave Heisely a nice a card expressing the clubs appreciation of all his work in the past, and asking if the club can do anything else for him at this time.  It was suggested that Rusty Bartel ofter to mow his grass at the same time that he mows the clubhouse grass.

Rusty Bartel also suggested that we have a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. Next meeting, everyone should be prepared to write down the tools that you are willing to share or bring with you to help. It should be a great resource.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 and a field day to clean the clubhouse commenced. Everyone pitched in and in no time the clubhouse was in great shape for the YE event.

August 5th, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our normally great hamburger/hotdog/  Bar-B-Q at 6:00.

Meeting called to order at 7:08 PM by V.P. Bill Dewey. President Ben Hallert had a business obligation and was unable to attend. Sec./Tres. Randy Stout was also present. The 12 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. We hosted 2 guests, Rich and Rollie. Welcome!

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a report on the construction progress for the new 12×16 cover over the BBQ area on the clubhouse deck. Bill said that he will need to pull a permit (at a cost of $150) and that the cover has been engineered (his daughter provided help on this) to handle a snow load of 25 lbs/sqFt. He intends to use 2×12’s in addition to the 2×8’s already up. He also still baffled and pleased that someone has delivered a nice number of acrylic panels for the project. Thanks to whoever has been so generous. Bill made up a total budget of $550. A motion was made to approve this budget by Dave Peterson, 2nd ed by Bruce Curtis and unanimously approved. Bill will get the permit and start on the project next month. A suggestion to pressure wash the building and otherwise spruce it up at this time was also made.

Ben was unable to report on his further research into the new projection TV system that will use our existing pull down screen. He will have info at the next meeting.

Daniel Cathy then spoke about the breakfast and lunch we provided at the Oregon Aviation Museum at Cottage Grove. The volunteers were fantastic, and many people rose to the occasion. He especially thanked Dave and Melinda Peterson, and Bill Dewey, but also thanked everyone else involved. He received nothing but praise from the OACAC and the Luscombe group.  He suggested that the group purchase a 8’x1.5’ banner with “Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 31” spelled out for the next activity that the club gets involved with. Dave Petersen then presented the club $192, profit made at the breakfast. The next breakfast is on the 15th of  August.

The Challenger II. was the next topic of discussion. People still want to know if the chapter was liable if we built it and sold it. It was decided to have Randy ask EAA national’s legal department. He has yet to do so. Also, when can it get it LSA designation- now or only after it is airworthy. Most believe that the LSA is really an airworthiness certificate, so obviously it needs to be airworthy for this to happen. As of now, the club has decided that any work that is accomplished will be on non-essential parts of the plane until these liability matters are settled.

Ken Schmidt has purchase the Bruce Curtis donated 6061 sheet aluminum in the clubhouse. He is going to look it over carefully then come up with a fair price.

President Ben and V.P. Bill along with several other pilots will be flying Young Eagles on the 12th of September. Volunteers would be nice to help with the logistics.

Daniel Cathy then noted that our very nice neighbor and club member Dave Heisley has been ill. He has always been such a club supporter, mowing the grass and providing water, that several members asked if we can do anything at this time to help him. It was suggested that Rusty Bartel mow his grass at the same time that he mows the clubhouse grass. It was also suggested that Randy send Dave a nice card expressing our appreciation of all his work in the past, and asking if the club can do anything else for him at this time.

Rusty Bartel also suggested that we have a list of special tools that club members have available for loan or help. Next meeting, everyone be prepared to write down the tools that you are willing to share or bring with you to help. It should be a great resource.

Randy then spoke briefly about the Stearman Fly-In just held in Cottage Grove, and the Boeing 40 mailplane that was in attendance. A Wonderful time was had by everyone.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 and a brief workshop  was held to determine what project that the group will be working on with the Challenger II

We received the following thanks from the OACAC:

“On behalf of the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club, I would like to thank EAA Chapter 31 for bringing their grills down to Cottage Grove and serving breakfast and lunch at our Fly-In on July 17th.  It contributed greatly to the success of the Fly-In.  I want to especially thank the cooks and servers.  They did a terrific job.
Jon Husser
President of OACAC”
Well done, folks!  For everyone else, hope you had a chance to make it out.  It was a lovely venue and there were some beauties on display.

Runway numbers painting – volunteer opportunity!

Shelley Humble, Creswell Airport Manager writes:

Hello to all,

We have a great opportunity that is being presented to the airport – Oregon Pilots Association, Lane County Chapter, has been looking for a few community projects.  They would like to re-paint the runway numbers and center line for 77S.  Todd Hurt and myself have been working together to see when this project could happen – it appears that the either of the next two Mondays could work, with the 20th being the best for the volunteers. The tentative outline for the project is to start the painting at 8 am and be completed early afternoon.

Before we confirm dates, I would like your input – it is our intention to complete this project with as little interruption to the airport and it’s users as possible.  Could you please email myself or Todd Hurt at your earliest convenience if Monday 20th would cause any of you a great hardship.   Thanks

Todd Hurt adds:

Not to apply too much pressure but our volunteers are best set up for this Monday the 20th.

Another option would be to start at 8am, break for lunch and open the runway up for the one hour, then close it after lunch if needed.   So a window to depart or arrive in the A.M. and at noon.

Also if there are any available volunteers from 77S, we should be able to speed the process up.  As of now, I have 6 individuals for this Monday.

Regards.

July 1st, 2009 meeting

The meeting started with our normally great hamburger/hotdog/ (Special 4th of July edition with potato salad!) Bar-B-Q at 6:00.

Meeting called to order at 7:08 PM by President Ben Hallert. V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout were also present. The 16 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves. One of the guests joined the club, so welcome next month Chris Winslow! We also had as a guest a very nice young man, Alex Munsel, a 16 yr. old student of Dorothy Schick, who made a good impression on everyone.

Tom Cunningham passed around a flyer advertising his brothers Hurricane Ultralight, located in Jano (Antelope Valley) Call Tom for more info at 541-895-2745.

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a report on the construction progress for the new 12×16 cover over the BBQ area on the clubhouse deck. Bill said that he will need to pull a permit (at a cost of $150) and that the cover needs to be engineered (his daughter is going to help on this) to handle a snow load of 25 lbs/sqFt. He also is baffled and pleased that someone has delivered a nice number of acrylic panels for the project. Thanks to whoever has been so generous. Bill will make up a total budget and get it approved before starting on the project next month.

Secretary Randy Stout noted that the clubhouse experienced a power failure earlier in the week when an EPUD fuse blew. We lost the frozen items and some of the cold items in the Fridges, but most were ready to go anyway. Ben will restock with fresh stuff.

Ben reported on his research into the new projection TV system that will use our existing pull down screen. He needs to be comfortable that the lumens put out by a less expensive system will adequately project a good picture for the audience. He will continue with his research for a local supplier in case it needs to be returned if it doesn’t put out enough lumens.

President Ben then spoke about the next breakfast to be held, an event where chapter 31 will be serving breakfast and lunch at the Oregon Aviation Museum at Cottage Grove. A call for volunteers was made, and many people rose to the occasion. This next breakfast/lunch is on the 18th of July. Please bring a large ice chest if you have one. Start of breakfast is 8:00-8:30 until 10:00, and lunch starts at 12:00 until 2:00. Dinner will be provided by others and is a pulled pork dinner for $15

The Challenger II. was the next topic of discussion. Several people wanted to know if the chapter was liable if we built it and sold it. It was decided to have Randy ask EAA national’s legal department.

Bill will be flying 4 Young Eagles next week. Volunteers would be nice to help with the logistics.

V.P. Bill Dewey gave a quick report on the Hood River Museum Tour and noted that they will be having their fly-in on 9/11 to 9/13 of this year. He said that 200 antique and 300 regular aircraft were in attendance last year. He also noted that next weekend (starting on the 8th) will be the Arlington Fly-In for EAA.

There being no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 and a brief workshop  was held to determine what project that the group will be working on with the Challenger II
