Meeting Minutes from the 10/2/2019 meeting
EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 2nd , 2019
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Rod Johnson. There was Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, salad, chips, Potato Salad, cookies for desert and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss their next great meal!! Thanks Rod for the great help and Paul Buehler for cooking!
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:59 PM by V.P. Gary Ludeke with President John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 14 members and guests in attendance. Checkbook balance was $3859.77 as of the date of the meeting.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, October 19th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Our volunteers for this breakfast are (hopefully) the same group as last time Tom, Bill, Rod and John, who will coordinate getting the breakfast ready to serve. Thanks in advance guys!
The replacement of the Creswell airport taxiways was the next topic. It is much more extensive than most of us thought.
VP Ludeke then spoke about his recent flight experiences in flying off the hours of the Les Wellington Wayex that he spoke about last month. It seems that they are experiencing fuel flow problems. After much discussion, removal of the inline filter and installation of a gascolator seemed the appropriate solution. He will report back next month.
Tom Cunningham asked to have his “airplane for sale” ad taken off the EAA 31 BLOG
Paul Buehler then spoke about his career in aviation, as a A+P/IA for the airlines until he worked for Heli-Tech manufacturing helicopter accessories. He is now building a Bearhawk B and hydroforming the ribs. He has a lot of experience and is a great new member of the club!!
Doug Kindred then noted that the Oregon Aviation Historical Museum has plans to fly 2 of the Story airplanes and the Great Lakes to Oshkosh for the Centennial Celebration of the Oregon Aviation Department, which began licensing Oregon airplanes in 1921, well before the FAA or CAA.
President John then began the showing of the newest Chapter Video this month, which highlighted the Blakesburg Antique Airplane fly in. It also had a technique lesson on using a hot wire to cut Styrofoam. Always interesting!
Bill Dewey offered to host the next meal before the meeting.
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:28PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the 9/4/2019 meeting
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by John and Ruth Kuehl. There was Lasagna, salad, brownies and ice cream for desert and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss their next great meal!! Thanks President John and Ruth for all the great help and cooking!
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:54 PM by President John Kuehl with V.P. Gary Ludeke and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 20 members and guests in attendance.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, September 21st.
President John then read an article from EAA National about Drones and airspace. Suggested we all look it up on-line for more info.
V.P. Ludeke then rose to give a quick report about member Rusty Bartel and his RV-12 project. Gary will be finishing up the airplane for him and will fly it first. He needs to go through all the service bulletins and make the necessary changes too. Then Rusty will fly it with him. It is then expected that Rusty will sell the airplane, so if you are interested in a new RV-12, stay tuned.
With no further business, President John then introduced Les Wellington who, along with Gary Ludeke, have finished and are now flying his Wayex. The joke is that they have had 4 first flights, with small pitch issues (Ruddervator bolts were sloppy) and fuel flow problems (gascolator was unporting) needing attention in order to complete the flight. It is now flying well, and Gary is going to be putting it through its paces. Les talked about all the help he got from his wife Lynne on this airplane, and also on the RV-12 they built previously and sold. He liked the cost of the Wayex and its aerobatic properties more than the RV-12.
He paid for his entire kit from Sonex after the founder died, hoping that he would get all his parts quickly and before the company had any financial problems. He did get all his parts, but they were delivered anything but quickly. For example, his crankshaft for the engine was the last engine part to arrive- which made it hard to start assembling the engine! The worst part was the lack of communication from the factory as to when the parts might be delivered.
The meeting was then suspended while the group went out back of the clubhouse and looked closely at the airplane. Very good construction and a nice airplane. As it got darker, the group again met inside the clubhouse.
President John then began the showing of the newest Chapter Video this month, which had some great Nicopress techniques and and Oshkosh report.
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:42 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the 8/7/2019 meeting
EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, August 7th, 2019
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM again hosted by Paul Messer. There were hot dogs and hamburgers, salad, cookies for desert and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss their next great meal!! Thanks Paul Messier and family for all the great help and cooking!
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:55 PM by President John Kuehl with V.P. Gary Ludeke and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 16 members in attendance with no guests.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, August 17th.
It was noted that the Oshkosh fly-in has now been done, and there was an 8% increase in airplanes on the field, with approximately 642,000 in attendance.
Wayne? then rose to speak about the new Young Eagle build program that EAA national is promoting. For $500 the chapter gets approximately $1500 worth of materials and tools in order to build an RC airplane, including a flight simulator for learning to fly the RC model in the kit. We will discuss this proposal and try to find a “spark plug” (Wayne?) to get it going.
With no further business, President John then presented his trials and tribulations as he invented? (made? engineered?) his own personal Hyperbolic chamber (no hyperbole!!) As you might well think, this was a massive multi year project that required him to learn how to weld airtight and overcome failures of design with innovation and hard work. He has invested over $13,000 in the project so far, along with 3+ years of time. It now seems to work very well and will hold 8-10PSI with a nice oxygen generator providing O2 to a face mask. He has taken over 40 “dives” in it so far and believes strongly in the benefits that he and others will receive when they use it. He does not plan to charge for the experience, unlike the commercial operations at VRC and Riverbend Hospital. Our own Paul Messer will be taking dives in a week or so. Good luck to everyone and thanks John for your hard work
President John did not have the newest showing of the Chapter Video this month, so without further ado;
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:12PM
Respectfully submitted,

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 7:00 PM by President John Kuehl with V.P. Gary Ludeke and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 18 members in attendance with no guests.
President John asked for help marking all chairs and tables with our “Chapter 31” mark so that he will feel comfortable loaning them to chapter 1457 for their event on July 30th.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, June 15th.
The upcoming YE event here at the clubhouse on July 4th was the next topic of conversation. We will meet on our regular meeting night of July 3rd to finalize the details. We will not have a dinner that night, so we will meet at 7:00. We will also discuss it at the Breakfast on the 15th with all who attend there. He asked everyone to go to the EAA YE web site and sign up for various duties and to make sure the pilots are covered with the background and flight time check.
He also noted that the Puget Sound Antique Aircraft club will be having a fly-out to Creswell on July 11th. EAA Chapter 31 will cook burgers and dogs from 10:30 or so until around 1:30 for this group. We need volunteers to help cook and organize. It should be a very interesting crowd with 4- Stearman, several N3N’s and approximately 20-30 aircraft. Don’t miss this fun event.
Bill Dewey then spoke about demo-ing the patio cover that was damaged by the snow this winter. Bill, John, Tom and Paul helped clean up the mess and pull the bad posts. The cleanup party did their thing on Saturday the 4th I believe. Thanks guys!!
With no further business, Paul Messier brought in the flight simulator that he purchased (for his very aviation minded kids) They proceeded to take off and land at Creswell Airport on the simulator, in between blowing up building, cars and themselves!! A very entertaining program that was quite an education for all of us as to the capabilities of Flight Simulators today. Thanks Paul!
With time running out, President John decided to forgo the showing of the Chapter Video this month.
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:30 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by John Kuehl. There were Costco Hot Dogs, great big hamburgers, cookies, chips and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss her next great meal!! Paul Messer will host that event.
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:59 PM President John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 13 members and guests in attendance.
Tom Cunningham then told the group that he has sold his airplane and therefore we will need a new “float” for the 4th of July Creswell parade. This plane displayed a banner that told everyone of the Young Eagle rides available at the airport after the parade. Rusty Bartell noted that he had a tractor and trailer for us to use and that the Mini Coupe airplane would be a good choice to put on it. Tom also noted that this weekend will be the first OAHS breakfast in Cottage Grove.
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, May 18th.
Bill Dewey then spoke about replacing the patio cover that was damaged by the snow this winter. He now suggests that we just clean it up and leave it at 2/3rd the size. It would save several thousand dollars and he was having a hard time getting help on the project. Bill, John, Tom and Paul volunteered to help clean up the mess and pull the bad posts. Cleanup party scheduled for this Saturday the 4th. Thanks guys!!
Bill also asked everyone to help with the Memorial Garden after the breakfast on the 18th.
Paul Messer also noted that he will bring in the simulator that he purchased (for his very aviation minded kids) to the next meeting in June. Thanks Paul!
There being no other business, the meeting was turned over to Randy Stout, who played a short movie on the challenges of taking off and landing at a short grass strip (Jasper Ridge 36OR). He also displayed several WW-1 and WW-2 artifacts that he brought in. He then mentioned that all pilots need to renew their EAA national approval to fly YE’s before the July event.
President Kuehl then showed the EAA National Monthly Chapter Video Magazine. As always, this was informative and helpful.
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:15 PM

Meeting Minutes from the 4/3/2019 meeting
EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, April 3rd, 2019
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salad, chips and cookies for desert courtesy of our great past President Bill Dewey. Thanks for another tasty meal!!
The meeting started at 7:00 PM with the pledge of allegiance lead by President V.P. Gary Ludeke.
Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout was also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 20 members and guests in attendance. Among the guests were Kevin and Tal from Roseburg chapter 495, who invited us to their fly-in at Glide (17OR, a roughly 2300’ one-way grass strip) on June 29th and 30th. They will be posting a link to a video of a landing on the strip at their web site. More info on the web site.
Kevin also brought a tool he developed to re-gap massive electrode spark plugs. It looks like a screwdriver with a tapered end. Thanks!!
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, April 20th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal!
Secretary Stout noted that the check book balance is $3556.78 as of 4/01/2019. He also noted that 2019 dues are due- $25 hard earned, well spent bucks. Send it by mail if you would prefer- EAA Chapter 31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478
Bill Dewey gave a report on the repair that is proceeding on the patio cover that collapsed during the snow storm last month. The building permit is now applied for, at a cost of $157.56. The total project should cost less than $1000 and will then cover the entire patio, not just the center portion. He is also going to purchase the plain bricks for the memorial garden near the FBO, and has already purchased the Japanese Maple tree (for $177) that will be planted there.
V.P. Ludeke then gave an update on President Kuehl’s absence and surgery for gall stones. He appears to be on the mend and should be well healed in 3-5 weeks. We all wished him a speedy recovery. He also asked for volunteers for dinner for the next few months. No one stepped forward but we will have it figured it out by the next dinner.
Gary also asked everyone who intends to be a YE pilot this July to go online to the EAA national web site and apply for pilot privileges to work with kids again. They need to be renewed every 2 years. He also suggested that on June 9th, (National YE day) it would be good to try the new software that national has produced to make YE paperwork easier. He also said that the June meeting should be focused on preparing for the Chapter 31 YE flights on the 4th of July at Creswell.
Tom Cunningham noted that the OAHS museum in Cottage Grove will be having monthly pancake breakfasts starting in May until September on the 1st. Saturday of the month at 8:00-10:00
It was noted by the Secretary that the club now has a complete set of Starduster 2 Plans and Jodel Plans available for sale. Any interested party should call him at 541-953-0610.
Jim Origliosso then noted that the Creswell School Superintendent and one of the teachers who had come to a meeting last year to ask for volunteers to speak aviation to some class rooms have both moved on to other districts. He is still hopeful that we can find the support needed to advance aviation to the kids as early as next September. He thinks that starting a tail or other single part of a kit might be the way to begin the program.
There being no other business, V.P. Gary then began a power point presentation about various changes in cockpits over the years, and accidents that changed the way we all fly. Included was an article about the October 1st, 1966 crash of the first commercial jet flight from the Eugene airport to Portland that crashed in the hills east of the PDX airport. Local pilot John Hirons folks were on that tragic flight. He ended it with a very thorough examination of the Concorde crash in Paris that killed all aboard. Needless to say, it wasn’t a simple blown tire that caused a punctured fuel tank and then the crash. Thanks Gary- very well done!!
There being no other business, the Vice President adjourned at 8:35 PM
respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

EAA 31 March Meeting Minutes
EAA 31 March 6th 2019 Meeting Minutes
Before the meeting the oven element in the stove died. Gary Ludeke volunteered his stove to heat up the Lasagna in his oven. We started dinner late.
Meeting began at about 7:20 with the pledge of allegiance. There were 14 members and guests present.
Bill Dewey will compile a list of materials for repair of the patio cover. John Kuehl will get a new stove element.
Greg Hughes of Van’s Aircraft did an excellent presentation. Here are some of the things we learned about Van’s history and development: It began with modifications of the Stitts Playboy. Soon we had the RV1 with metal wings. RV2 was never finished. RV3 was the 1st real “RV”. RV4 put the RV’s on the map.
RV 9 unusual. RV 10 4 place. There are over 10,000 RV’s known flying. 2,000
RV 10s kits sold. RV 14 most popular since 2013. RV’s 7,8,9, 12 still selling. The newer kits are “no jig” CNC shaped and punched in Aurora. Quick builds sub assemblies are done in the Philippines and shipped back to Aurora.
Van’s has a great new web site (check it out). Among new developments are the new MOSAIC initiative. Potential certification of demand built kits (which would make them “not” experimental, allow commercial use, flight training etc.)
Potential changes in Light Sport. Higher weight and speed, IMC certification and more.
Davis Dayton (young guy U of Az who was in charge of the EAA’s one week wonder of an RV 12 at Airventure 2018) spoke about the “Teen Flights” Hillsboro and Airway science for kids. Looks like a great step forward for getting young people into aviation.
There was not time for the Chapter Video Magazine. 7 minutes of the Smothers Brothers “I am a pilot” (funny stuff) was shown instead.
Thanks to Jim Origliosso for getting this great presentation, Rod Johnson for the meal and taking notes, and Gary Ludeke for use of his oven. Our next get together will be Saturday March 16 2019 9:00 AM Pancake Breakfast $8.00 bucks. The weather should be better. Those that were concerned about the atmospheric conditions for this March missed a great meeting. Pres John.
