Meeting Minutes from the 10/2/2014 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 2nd , 2014

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM (With Sandy Ludeke’s  now famous chili).  Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, salad and chips with a drink and dessert for only $5. (*see more about the menu in the minutes)

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:03 PM by President Gary Ludeke with V.P. John Kuehl and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout present. Dave Petersen went home early not feeling well, but set up and cooked the dinner as he normally does. President Ludeke began by asking all to stand and recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

There were 23 members and guests in attendance. Among the guests were Jim Walker, a nurse at the hospital with a real interest in aviation, Mike Tracey, a salesman at Roverson Ford and Diraya Torigian, EAA # 423423 who is doing a quick build project. We also had Bill Johnson join the group as our newest member. He is originally from Simi Valley , CA.

Pres. Ludeke then mentioned that the Creswell Cronicle did an article on the re-painting of the Creswell Airport mural (which is nearly complete). They also did an article on the “Buy a Brick” program, with Gary holding up a brick, but with an unfortunately worded T-shirt in the background. Ask him about it.

Gary suggested that everyone who hasn’t seen the fuselage for Tony’s new road-able airplane exit the building and check it out while we still had daylight. Tony had parked it up front of the clubhouse. Most of the folks in attendance did take a peak, and in about 15 minutes, the group was called back to order.

Gary also asked for a show of hands for those who will be attending the LSA Inspector/Repair person workshop at Mulino on October 3rd and 4th which will cost $375.  This workshop will allow you to certify your experimental LSA for flight each year. It is being put on by a very professional group of teachers and repair people. Several people raised their hands.

*Although Tom Cunningham had asked last month if we could vary the menu a bit month to month, Gary was not able to find a volunteer with a cooking talent for doing so this month. His wife’s Chili was a great treat, but he is hoping for a more radical change in the menu for next month. Anyone with an interest or talent are asked to contact him on this matter.

Randy gave an update on the “Buy a Brick” program. 2 people have purchased bricks and paid, and he was able to show the first bricks that are ready for installation. He asked Dave Eason if he would install them, and Dave agreed to get it done. He reminded the group that if we purchase 4 bricks at a time, we will not be charged the $19.95 fee for less than 4.

Next Chapter breakfast is October 18th (a special birthday for someone in the group) at the clubhouse. $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 11:00 or so. Come and bring your appetite!!

There being no other business, the meeting then hosted our speaker of the night, Tony Horvath from Specialty Aero, who also brought in a guest to help with the presentation, Sean Van Hatten. They showed a nice group of aircraft parts that they manufacture at the North end of the airport and a new covering system that they are having some success with on the low airspeed birds. Very interesting look at his business and Sean did a good job helping Tony. Thanks to both of them!!

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:15 pm
respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from 9/3/2014 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, September 3rd , 2014

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM (Without Melinda Petersen’s famous chili).  Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, salad and chips with a drink and dessert for only $5. (*see more about the menu in the minutes)

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM by President Gary Ludeke with V.P. John Kuehl and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout present.  President Ludeke began by asking all to stand and recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

There were 22 members and guests in attendance. Among the guests were Bob Lackey Elder. and Jr., Dean Gromley (traveling around the country in his motorhome), Roger Rush (he helps mow the airport grass) and our speaker of the evening Harry Anderson.

Pres. Ludeke then mentioned that the re-painting of the Creswell Airport mural was nearly complete. He said that Betty Wright paid for this work, as the mural relates to her late husband, Jim. It was suggested that we and Shelly from the Creswell Airport send her a note of thanks.

He also noted that there will be an LSA Inspector/Repair person workshop at Mulino on October 3rd and 4th which will cost $375.  This workshop will allow you to certify your experimental LSA for flight each year. It is begin put on by a very professional group of teachers and repair people. Sign up is necessary before the school.

*Tom Cunningham then asked if we could vary the menu a bit month to month. He noted that past President Ben Hallert had a Taco night and an Italian night, which he would like to see brought back. It was suggested that he get together with Dave Petersen, our defacto food guru, and work out a menu. Secretary Stout said that the club would be happy to pay for the ingredients, but please notify him ahead so that we can mention it in the club newsletter.

Randy gave an update on the “Buy a Brick” program. 2 people have purchased bricks and paid, but we have not received the bricks yet. Randy has sent the check for the bricks and put a check for 47.50 into the treasury as profit from the 2 bricks. In the future, if we purchase 4 bricks at a time, we will not be charged the $19.95 fee for less than 4. He is looking forward to showing the bricks at the next meeting and then having them installed. It was suggested that Randy print up some “Buy a Brick” applications to put in the airport lounge for the folks who drop by and want to commemorate someone this way.

Next Chapter breakfast is September 20th at the clubhouse. $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to 11:00 or so. Come and bring your appetite!!

There being no other business, the meeting then hosted Harry Anderson, founder of EDX Wireless and  the pilot who has flown around the world and to the South Pole (He tried in 2013 and had to turn back. He finally made it this year!!). He gave a very exciting slide presentation on his trips. The only word that the club could say was “WOW” He was invited back to share more of his trips as he makes them.

After much applause, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm
respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from 7/2/2014 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, July 2nd, 2014

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM (Without Melinda Petersen’s famous chili).  Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, salad and chips with a drink and dessert  (Lots of cookies this month!!) for only $5.

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM by President Gary Ludeke with Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout also present. V.P. John Kuehl was absent.  President Ludeke began by asking all to stand and recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

There were 17 members and guests in attendance.

Ron Rinaldi was unable to attend to update the “Buy a Brick” program, but should be with us next meeting.

Next Chapter breakfast is July 19th at the clubhouse. $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to 11:00 or so. Come and bring your appetite!!

Our August meeting will be a recap of the July 4th activities, catch up on member happenings and an interesting video. In September, we will be hosting Harry Anderson, the pilot who has flown around the world and to the South Pole. He has a very nice presentation that he will be sharing about his adventures. Don’t miss it!!

President Gary then spoke to the club about our participation in Creswell’s July 4th celebrations. We have 10 aircraft and pilots available for YE flights this year. He then read articles by the Creswell Cronicle and the newsletter put into all the City of Creswell bills. He noted that the Av-Gas supplier to Creswell Airport will be donating $500 worth of fuel to the YE planes, and Ken Schmidt will find a fun way to divide it up among the group. The plan is for pilots of planes that will be flying over the parade or on YE flights to meet at 10:00 in the clubhouse for a briefing. Food will be served during the day.

Tom Cunningham reported that the Oregon Aviation Historical Society had their first “Wings and Wheels” gathering in Cottage Grove last weekend. It was a big success with approximately 1000 people attending.

Doug Kindred noted that the Oregon Air Tour starts on July 19th ( Just after breakfast?) in Cottage Grove and Gary will be attending in lieu of a cross country trip he was planning. (Something about softball sized hailstones leaving the wrong impression on him and his airplane!!)

President Gary then gave out some awards to two of our members. To Tom Cunningham, Gary gave a bumper sticker that says “Caution, this car stops at all airports” for his help with the mowing and coordinating the display of his airplane during the July 4th parade.  To Virgil and Bridget Pratt he presented a Cessna belt buckle for their help with supplying a tow vehicle for the parade and allowing Gary to go on YE flights by covering his duties. Thanks to these folks, and everyone who is working so hard to make this event fun and safe.

Dave Petersen noted that we have EAA National insurance in place for this event.

Rusty Bartel then gave a brief “Craftsman Corner” presentation on “Hardman” epoxy that he acquired from the United R.A.T. Rocket works, where he used to work. It sets up in 3-5 minutes and is very durable.

We then asked all in attendance to grab a mop, broom, vacuum or rags and help clean the clubhouse. I am not sure this form of entertainment is going to catch on, but it did accomplish wonders. Thanks to everyone who got dirty to make the place less so.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Minutes of the April 2nd, 2014 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, April 2nd, 2014

The meeting started at 7:21 (Without Melinda Petersen’s famous chili).  Several members didn’t get the posting from Gary that there would not be a dinner before the meeting. Rusty was sent out for food and the email system will be de-bugged. Pres. Gary suggested that unless we have a few in the club who are willing to put on the dinner each month, we should approach Bubba’s about catering some dinners at the clubhouse. He will report back on this.

As mentioned, the business meeting was called to order at 7:21 PM by President Gary Ludeke with  V.P. John Kuehl and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present.  President Ludeke suggested that since many were still eating, we would not recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag at this meeting only.

There were 19 members guests in attendance.  As there were no introductions from the membership, the few guests in attendance are not named in these minutes.

Next Chapter breakfast is April 19th at the clubhouse. $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!!  Come and bring your appetite!!

Secretary Stout mentioned that due are due again. $25 made out to EAA Chapter 31 and given to him or sent to 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR  97478

President Gary then spoke to the club about our participation in Creswell’s July 4th celebrations. He is hoping that we can add our “Airport Days” to the festivities, which should include a float for the parade, a fly-over and several events at the airport to draw people in. There was some discussion on what the club events should be, and Gary also mentioned that the club could become involved with a non-flying community activity, perhaps cleaning up after the farmers market.

Pres. Gary then suggested that an activity closer to home might also be started. He noted that the gate on the road into the clubhouse is in poor condition. Several offers of help with fixing it came in from Rusty and Bill, and Ron Rinaldi offered to make us a new tube gate if the old one is just not fixable. Thanks to all the volunteers. Gary will talk to Shelly first then turn the guys loose on this project.

Secretary Stout offered to get a PayPal account set up for the “Buy a Brick” program and give this info to Ron Rinaldi.

Ron Rinaldi then presented a slide show on his Sopwith Camel.  His father started it from plans given to him by Ron for his birthday many years ago. He then purchased a rotary engine and real machine guns, and got it 80% done before his passing. Ron decided that it would be a great tribute to his father and really bless his mother if he finished it. The slides told a great story of his plane and the eventual loan of it to the Evergreen Museum. Thanks Ron for this very interesting program!!

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:51 pm

Meeting Minutes from 2/5/2014 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, February 5th, 2014

The meeting started at 6:00 (With Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, drinks and cookies and pastry for dessert for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Gary Ludeke and V.P. John Kuehl with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present.  There were 20 members and one guest in attendance. The guest was Darrell Derossett, a retired military and security man who has moved here recently from Davenport, IA. He has a Luscombe and a 1958 172 that he brought with him. He will need some help re-installing the Luscombe’s wings. (He joined the chapter formally at the end of the meeting) Welcome Darrell!!

President Ludeke suggested that everyone stand and recite the pledge of allegiance to the flag. This was done after the flag was moved to the correct position on the dais. It is intended that we will recite the pledge before the start of each meeting.

Next Chapter breakfast is February 15th at the clubhouse. $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! That is a great time!!

Secretary Stout mentioned that due are due again. $25 made out to EAA Chapter 31 and given to him or sent to 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR  97478

President Ludeke then delivered a “State of the Chapter” report. He noted that the club has approximately $2700 cash available for projects, and that we lost around $80 last year. He then outlined his goals for the coming year: (in no particular order)

Goal 1:  Have chapter 31 either participate or stage a community volunteer event this year. This may or may not be aviation oriented, but will be an opportunity to help make the chapter and the airport as a whole, more visible to the local community in a positive way.

Goal 2: Work the local community newspaper (he met with the Creswell Chronicle editor) and have them tour the airport and report on the chapter in the newspaper. Do the same at the Cottage Grove paper and perhaps the Register Guard.

Goal 3: Approach the local High School and offer to fly kids on our YE day, or teach a ground school for a group of interested young people.

Goal 4: Advertise our monthly breakfast’s to the community, groups like the Coffee and Cars folks in order for more people to join us and see what goes on in Chapter 31 EAA

Goal 5: 50 Paid Chapter 31 members, with an average attendance of 25 for the meetings and breakfasts.

Goal 6: Fly more YE’s this year than last.

Goal 7: Get the “buy a brick” program off and running.

Goal 8: Monthly programs that are exciting, informative or both. He noted that there are many speakers in our local area who would qualify, so he will be working with John Kuehl in identifying and contacting these people with the intention of having them come and speak with us. He also noted that a “Craftsman Corner” mini program each month, which was started late last year, is something that he wants to see continued.

Goal 9: Hold one or more “Fun Events”, not necessarily flying oriented, during the year for members and their families to enjoy together. Examples might be a picnic, miniature golf, bowling or a softball game.

Dave Eason then spoke about the “buy a brick” program he has been working on. It turns out that the local vendor for bricks may be getting cold feet, so he has endorsed the vendor from Florida, who has a very professional web site and knows how to help clubs like ours get started. Ron Rinaldi stepped up and offered to accept a Presidential appointment as “Honor Guard Garden Chairman” and will coordinate with our web guru and the vendor in order to begin to offer these bricks. Dave Eason Accepted the responsibility of performing the actual brick installations in the Garden. By next month we should be able to have a place on our web site that directs people to the brick company and then we can advertise this new program. A nice example of a large brick was on display. They will sell for $75 and the normal size brick will be $50. The price includes shipping and installation in the “Honor Garden” walkway. These bricks can commemorate a living or dead loved one, or a family that supports EAA and aviation at Creswell.

President Ludeke then appointed past President Bill Dewey as the first chairman of the Scholarship Committee. Bill will research all the liability issues and report back as he begins to flesh out the details of the Program. Hal Skinner and Darrell suggested that we start with a Scholarship for ground school, which by its nature should have less liability attached.  Stay tuned!!

Gary then introduced Dave Eason as our first “Craftsman Corner” presenter for the night. Dave spoke about a de-burring tool he made from a de-burring head and swivel screw driver. It works great! After Dave, John Kuehl spoke about a desiccant dryer he had fashioned from a Pet Smart air pump, some tubing and some Silica Gel with Cobalt Chloride added to change color as it absorbed moisture. He mentioned that you can “Re-charge” the Silica Gel in the microwave, and so the cost is very low. He uses it to keep an engine he has dry by running a hose in one end of the crankcase and closing the loop by running a hose back. I took some pictures that I will attempt to post on the web site.

Tom Cunningham then rose to speak about another project that would be simple, fun and easy for the chapter to do. He showed an example of a calendar that he received from another group that had a picture for each month of a project or completed airplane that someone was working on. Hopefully he can ram-rod this project and we will have a nice calendar for the rest of the year and possibly next.

Dave Heisley noted that the water for the clubhouse would be turned off in February. As the water owner, he needs to exercise his right each year, which he does in February in order not to affect us too much. Thanks as always Dave for your generous gift of water each year!!

There being no other business, the monthly EAA nationals E-newsletter video was shown. In it, Jeff Skiles showed us what it might look like to a new pilot as he transitioned from a Stearman to an AT-6 to a Twin Beech to a B-24 to a B-29!! Fascinating show- don’t miss next months. The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Dewey then gave out Chapter Service awards and pins to the guilty parties. Bill then talked about the joint Chapter 31-1457 Christmas party that was held at the clubhouse on December 14th. 28 people attended and the ornaments were sold at the end. The club made about $85 profit from the event, with $232.50 delivered by Gary to the Secretary for deposit. It worked so well that there are already plans for next year!!

Bill Dewey mentioned previously that he has been president for a number of years, and would like to step down at the end of the year. The group agreed to open up nominations for the next President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer at the November meeting, and vote at this meeting. The nominees were Gary Ludeke and John Kuehl (winner will be President 2nd place VP) and Randy Stout (for Secretary/Treasurer). The 2 Presidental candidates then got up and outlined their platforms. Gary was for getting more local involvement and promoting the breakfast more along with a chicken in every pot.  John said something about pot that I didn’t catch and they both agreed that we need a good program for every meeting.  The ballots were distributed and counted. Gary Ludeke won, with John to be VP (then President in 2 years). Randy Stout was re-elected by a narrow margin.

Meeting Minutes from 10/2/2013 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 2nd, 2013

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, drinks and a wonderful zucchini bread for dessert for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 11 members in attendance (Sadly no guests) then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month” Gary Ludeke flew his Firestar at 42deg.F Burrrr!

Next Chapter breakfast is October 19th at the clubhouse. At that time, we will expect several In and out of town members of the OACAC to be here early in anticipation of the 1:00 meeting at the clubhouse. Be sure to make the breakfast and then attend the meeting and join the OACAC if you want to be a part of their fun.

Bill Dewey mentioned that he has been president for a number of years, and would like to step down at the end of the year. The group agreed to open up nominations for the next President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer at the next meeting, and vote at the January meeting. At the November meeting, names will be brought forth and presented to the membership. Please be ready to serve if you are called, and offer to serve if you have an interest and have not yet been nominated. Often we find people who have an interest but have not expressed it- so no one knows. Please be that person who can provide leadership and organization for the next few years. E-mail me or Bill Dewey if you wouldn’t mind serving in some capacity starting in 2014.

Bill Dewey opened up the topic of an EAA Christmas party. Most in attendance seemed to feel that a joint party with Chapter 1457 would be the best result, so it was suggested that Bill call the President of that chapter and offer to join the festivities. He will report back the results at the next meeting.

The skydiver compromise that the City of Creswell has reached was the next topic of discussion. Not the right place here to put down all the comments, but it appeared that the club will support whatever the FAA decides will work well at the airport.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:58 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout
Secretary/ Treasurer
