Meeting Minutes from 8/1/2018 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, August 1st, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with Hot Dogs and Hamburgers, salad, cookies and a drink for only $8! Thanks to Rod Johnson and all the guys for helping out. BTW- Rod’s new phone number is 541-255-7064

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance lead by VP Gary Ludeke at 7:00 PM. Sharp. (President John Kuehl was still returning from Oshkosh and therefore absent) Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout was also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 19 members and guests in attendance. Our Guests included Dr. Damon Armitage (our speaker for the night) and Jim Torley (?) from Colorado Springs. He is a CFI and was Gary Ludeke’s guest. Also we hosted Jim Riglib (?), a chapter 1457 member and Charlie Walkers guest and Steve Letsome, past member Dick’s son. Welcome to all!!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, August 18th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal!

Allen Weider gave a quick Oshkosh report, having just returned from the yearly fly-in. He said that for some reason the pattern was “mayhem” this year. Hopefully they will change whatever went wrong and be back to the well run operation we are all so used too.

Secretary Stout then reminded the group about name tags. Everyone in attendance should have their name tag on, just to make sure we get to know each other better. Also, the check book balance is $3179.48 (We paid for ½ of the repair on the water well, which was over $500)

Charlie Walker then suggested we review our YE procedures, as several kids did not get rides, even though they waited for a long time. He is willing to help make this a more enjoyable day. The Secretary noted that we usually have a debriefing session after each YE event during the following regular meeting, but the President is gone this meeting so it will have to wait until next month for this to happen. VP Ludeke said that he will take all the YE forms that were filled out but kids not flown and contact them to arrange for rides.

It was also mentioned that Cassie Barrong from the Oregon Aviation History Museum in Cottage Grove had come into the clubhouse to borrow some tables and chairs and noted that the water was on full force in one of the bathrooms. The Secretary fessed up that he had been in the clubhouse the day before and probably left the water on. There was not water pressure when he tried the faucet, and inadvertently left the tap open. Let’s try not to let this happen again!!

V.P. Ludeke then spoke about the satisfaction he and others received upon completion of the RV-3 that we presented to the OAHM in Cottage Grove. He was approached by Tim Talen from the OAHM to have 2 – Story Special (#1 and #2) Airplanes owned by them rebuilt. They have a significant place in our Oregon Aviation heritage and would be a worthy project. He would like to work on them on Friday’s at the OAHM in Cottage Grove and have them done by 2021. Anyone interested in helping should give Gary a Call.

The OAHM in CG is also hosting the Great Oregon Homebuilt fly-in on Labor Day weekend, at which they will dedicate the RV-3 that was completed by our group. Be sure you don’t miss this one!

Dave Eason then spoke about his tour of the JPL in Pasadena where they are building the Mar’s Lander. He also said that should you be interested in getting your hands dirty on the rebuild of a B-17, they meet in Salem on Thursdays and volunteers are welcome.

Tom Preuss was mentioned with thankfulness as he has donated his Fly-Baby Warbird conversion the OAHM in CG. Thanks Tom!!

It was also noted that the Jim Wright Memorial Stearman Fly-In will be this weekend at the CG airport.

Vice President Gary then introduced our speaker for the night, Dr. Damon Armitage. He moved to town in 2017 after being in the Air Force in Afghanistan, Africa and at Travis AFB. He was most recently the flight surgeon for the 123rd National Guard unit with the 142nd Medical Group. He has 2 kids and lives in the Camas Swale area. He gives all types of FAA medical exams, including Basic Med, which he spoke of at length. He had a nice power point presentation on the ins and outs of Basic Med, and afterword answered questions, especially those about disqualifying events. Thanks Dr. Armitage!!!

EAA Chapter Meeting – Wednesday, August 1!

Don’t let this one sneak up on you! Our meeting is tomorrow, August 1. It’s only one in 7 that our meeting will occur on the first day of the month. Be there! Our speaker is Dr. Armitage, Creswell’s most recent AME. Plus, I understand were going to have a good old hamburger and hotdog BBQ. Don’t miss it!

EAA CHAPTER 31 AUGUST MEETING & DINNER

Our August meeting and dinner will be held this coming Wednesday, August 1 at our clubhouse. Don’t let it sneak up on you! This is one of those rare times when our meeting falls on the first day of the month! Our program speaker will be Doctor Damon Armitage, Creswell’s newest FAA  Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Doctor Armitage gives medical exams for all all three classes of medical certificates as well as BasicMed. Several chapter members, including yours truly, are flying on BasicMed certificates obtained after being examined by Doctor Armitage. Doctor Armitage is also a Lt. Colonel in the Oregon Air National Guard serving as a Flight Surgeon. He is a Cottage Grove native. 

Both Rod Johnson and Bill Dewey have offered to prepare our dinner. As I write this I don’t know which one will take the lead but it’s possible we’ll have both of them sharing the load. However it turns out, it should be good food and great hangar flying! As always, dinner is at 6 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7 p.m. I hope to see you all there! President John won’t be present as he will not have yet returned from Oshkosh.

July 4th Young Eagles Day

I want to thank everyone of you who worked to make this year’s event great! It was somewhat tough this year with the challenging crosswinds and the bumpy air but everybody did their best to give the kids a great and safe flight. Many people, both pilots and ground personnel, worked until they literally dropped from exhaustion. Along with Chapter 31 members, we had great help from Chapter 1457, Albany, Daniel’s Field and several parents and grand parents of Young Eagles. I won’t try to list names because the list is long and I’m sure I would inadvertently leave someone out.  I sincerely want to say it was an honor and a privilege to work with all of you on this event! THANK YOU!

4th OF JULY YOUNG EAGLES RESULTS

We had 11 planes from 3 EAA Chapters fly 41 flights and 79 Young Eagles.  Flights got started around noon. By 2:00 PM we had pretty stiff cross winds on the runway and some elected to discontinue for safety concerns. (always a good idea).  But by 3:30 or so we had very clean wind free air and the flights continued.  Here is the tally:   Chapter 31 (Creswell/Eugene) had 30 flights and 65 Young eagles.  Chapter 1525 (Albany) had 7 flights and 10 Young Eagles.  Chapter 1457 (Eugene) has 4 flights and 4 Young eagles.  Here are the individual stats:

Chapter 31; Randy Stout 10 flights for 10 Young Eagles. (If he had a 172 it would have been 30 kids!).  Ray Morse 7 flights for 18 Young eagles.  Bill Dewey 6 flights for 17 Young Eagles.  Jim Origliosso 5 flights for 15 young Eagles.  Gary Ludeke 2 flights for 2 Young Eagles.  David Cole 1 flight for 3 Young Eagles.

Chapter 1524:  Richard Key 5 flights for 5 Young Eagles.  Gary Burroughs 1 flight for 3 Young Eagles.  Greg Burrows 1 flight for 2 Young Eagles.

Chapter 1457: Alan Wieder 2 flights for 2 Young Eagles. Bruce Gustafson 2 flights for 2 Young Eagles.

Many thanks for all who flew and all the hard work on the ground.  There was a ton of prep and tear down both inside and out and everybody pitched in.  Many Many thanks to all.  We had a lot of smiles on a lot of kids, some of which are likely to become pilots.  A successful day.  Thanks again.

GEARING UP FOR THE 4th OF JULY #7(last one)

We are off and running.  The canopies are already set up.  Almost all of the needed pilot information is gathered. We NEED more ground personnel.   People to guide Young Eagles to their pilot with log book, YE certificate, and Pilot registration.  All the pilot needs to do is sign these, pose for photos and pick up the next Young Eagle(s).  Everything should be printed out and carried to the plane by the ground guru directing YE to the aircraft.   Also need one or two volunteers to direct car parking  and somebody on the computer/printer.                           Remember to bring the following:

Wear your Young Eagle Tee Shirts.  If you do not already have same, pick one up from the storage closet and put $5 to $8 bucks in the kitty.

Bring unneeded Kit Planes and Sport Aviation magazines so we can add a label and give them away.

Bring any portable Nav/Com radios you are not using.  Flight operations (ground) will be 123.3

Big Bites (same vendor as last year) will be on hand for eats, treats and drinks.

Get some rest.  Bring a smile.  We will start setting up around 8:00 AM. (Gary just informed me the wind got to our canopy setup, so we have a do-over)  Flights in gear by around 11:00 AM

GEARING UP FOR THE 4th OF JULY #6

HooRay HooRah; EAA 31 got our water supply back at 3:30 PM today.  Final pressure adjustments and leak detection complete.   A definite relief.  Just in time for tomorrow’s (Tuesday July 3rd) preparations for Young Eagles on the 4th.

Tomorrow we need to do the following:

Set up the outside canopies

Clean the floor, tables, chairs etc.

Set up the computer station to print YE certificates and Pilot info for the consent forms.

Set up the temporary crowd control fencing.

Other stuff I haven’t yet thought of.  Please point out anything we’re missing.

We’ll start at 9:00 AM and work until we are done or until we reach all we can do before the 4th.  You could bring Kitplane and Sport Aviation copies for promotional give away.

GEARING UP FOR THE 4th OF JULY #5

If you have been in the Chapter hangar in the last couple of days, you may have noticed we don’t have any water. We had a major meltdown of the water supply system.  The well owner, Paul, has already purchased a new expansion tank.  I went with him this morning to a local electric shop in Goshen today to see about getting the pump motor repaired.  The plumber arrived later and we should have water again by late today and, of course, in time for the 4th of July.  Chapter 31 will be splitting this cost with Paul.  Glad it failed when it did and not on the 3rd or the 4th.  NOTE:  We will need more ground volunteers on the 4th.  More in formation on cleaning and setting up on July 3rd to follow.
