EAA 31 June 2018 Meeting Wednesday the 6th

Did you know that before there was an EAA or an “Experimental” aircraft designation home built aircraft were deemed “unsafe and illegal” by our Federal government.  There were, however,  a group of “outlaws” in Oregon that did not follow the rules and they (gasp) DESIGNED, BUILT AND FLEW THERE OWN AIRCRAFT!  Cassandra Barrong of the Oregon Aviation Historical Society (OAHS) will be here to tell the story of these Oregon Outlaws who helped shape general aviation as we know it.  You will know stuff you didn’t know you didn’t know and therefore, be better educated and have fun doing it.

Dinner 6:00 PM EAA 31 Clubhouse, (did you notice we now have “EAA 31” displayed prominently on the roof in 11ft letters) Hobby Field, Creswell OR Airport.  Jim O will surprise us with some Costco goodies.  It’s only $8:00 bucks.

Meeting 7:00 PM.  Chapter 31 is mentioned in the latest Sport Aviation Magazine.  VP Gary will present an article and a couple of short videos,  we will gear up for 4th of July Young Eagles, Cassandra will entertain and enlighten us on how  general aviation “took off” in Oregon in spite of the Feds.  Bring a friend.  Bring a date. (cheap – not the gal, the meal)

Reminder Roof Lettering Breakfast

Well aviators,  it looks like the weather is likely to cooperate for our roof lettering work party, Saturday May 19th 9:00 AM.  If anyone has a long (10 to 12 feet) straight edge, please bring it.  Extra extension ladders are also welcome. Wear your grubbies.  Knee pads might be appropriate.  We should have fun painting “EAA 31” on the roof of the hangar in 11 foot tall letters.  Work starts right after our $8 dollar breakfast.

Rusty’s Cessna 150 Flies!

Darrin signed off the Annual Inspection today after making sure all required paperwork was in order. I made the first flight with the newly overhauled engine and it ran perfectly! I flew for 30 minutes in the vicinity of the airport and then landed so Darrin could give it a quick check. There were no visible fluid leaks. In flight the oil pressure and temperature were nominal and stable. All gyro instruments function perfectly with good vacuum from the pump. The new starter works like a charm! I will fly it again tomorrow as a part of the engine break-in process.

If there is any serious interest in forming a flying club, or any individuals are interested in purchasing this airplane I suggest you move quickly. Rusty is interested in getting this airplane sold in a timely manner so he can move his nearly completed RV-12 to the hangar. I will be advertising this airplane for Rusty and Beth locally and on Barnstormers.com in the very near future. Darrin thinks the 1967 C-150G was the best C-150 that Cessna ever made. After flying it, I tend to agree! After researching aircraft blue book values I believe that this airplane should sell for somewhere around $27,000.00. Of course the final say on accepting any offers will be made by Beth and Rusty. You can email me directly at rv6an200gl@charter.net or call me at 541-914-8605 if you have any questions or want to submit an offer. Please DO NOT reply directly to this post. Our server is not designed to accept responses and your inquiry will be lost.

Chapter 31 in May Issue of Sport Aviation!

For those of you that are national EAA members, be sure to check out Lauran Paine’s “Plane Talk column. Chapter 31 is recognized for our participation in the Young Eagles program.

Also, for those of you who haven’t heard, Eugene Skydivers is now under new management. I stopped by their operation and invited the new owners (Mark and Africa) to our May meeting. They plan to attend so be sure to introduce yourselves to them and make them feel welcome.

BREAKFAST REMINDER

This is a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday, April 21 is our breakfast at the clubhouse. It’s shaping up to be a great weekend for flying so we may have a number of additional people (Walt, please bring more eggs than usual – Thanks!). Chapter 1457 definitely plans to have some people come as it is their first official fly-out of the season. See you there!

Jim Showker – Sad News!

I just learned that Jim Showker passed away from liver cancer yesterday (3/30/18).

Some of you may remember Jim from the presentation he gave to our chapter in 2014 on his rebuild of an Aeroprakt A26. Jim bought a damaged twin-engine version of this aircraft and converted it to the single-engine model! He did a great job on a very difficult project. The airplane was and is still based at Daniels Field. I met Jim after he called me and asked if I would be willing to give him the required flight training for his Sport Pilot License in his Aeroprakt. Jim was already an experienced ultralight pilot and he very quickly picked up the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Sport Pilot. We began his training on May 2, 2014. I signed him off for the FAA Practical Test on July 1, 2014!

I heard that Jim made his last flight just one week ago. He was weak, but still a very capable pilot. He will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him, and especially those of us who flew with him!

Saturday Breakfast

Saturday March 17th (St Patrick’s Day).  We could do green eggs and ham, but we’ll probably just go with our normal Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Butter, Coffee, Syrup, Pancakes, Hot Chocolate (if you mix your coffee with hot chocolate you have “moca”). Orange Juice –  all for the “NEW” low price of $8.00 bucks. (Still the best breakfast deal around).  Plus you get to rub elbows with other airplane nuts and talk planes and flying and landing and navigating and building and riveting and covering and communicating and all kinds of good stuff.  Bring a friend.

See you Saturday 9:00 AM till around 10:30 AM

President John
