EAA Announces Inaugural Learn to Fly Week – May 15 to 20
Aspiring aviators will have the opportunity to discover multiple pathways to becoming a pilot as EAA
presents its inaugural Learn to Fly Week on May 15-20.
Beginning May 15th, expert flight instructors and representatives from various aviation organizations
will present free, interactive webinars. These webinars will cover topics from starting flight training,
saving time and money in flight training, preparing for the FAA written exam, to passing the checkride,
and so much more. While the live showing of these presentations will be open to the public, the
recordings will be archived for EAA members to view at their convenience.
Learn to Fly Week will conclude on Saturday, May 20, with Flying Start events hosted at chapters across
the country. EAA’s Flying Start program allows EAA chapters to welcome, encourage, and educate new
aviation enthusiasts about the fun, freedom, and accessibility of personal aviation in their local area.
Following a short presentation about learning to fly, attendees will be offered a free introductory Eagle
Flight to experience the spirit of aviation firsthand.
“Becoming a pilot is a dream for many, but few know where to start their journey. Learn to Fly Week
was created to help encourage aspiring pilots to take action and begin the pilot training process,” said
David Leiting, EAA Eagles Program Manager. “Our goal is to show attendees how accessible achieving
their dream actually is.” Leiting also added that inspiration from this event stemmed from packed
forums at the Learn to Fly Center at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, as well as the success of other EAA
virtual events like Homebuilders Week and Virtual Ultralight Days.
Combining the educational forums from the Learn to Fly Center and the connections and inspiration
found at Flying Start events, EAA Learn to Fly Week is the latest effort in the ongoing effort to help
aspiring pilots achieve their dream of flight.
Sporty’s Pilot Shop is the presenting sponsor of Learn to Fly Week. Sporty’s will be participating in
multiple webinars and offering product discounts during the week.
Full webinar schedule and more details on Learn to Fly Week can be found at EAA.org/LTFWeek.

Meeting Minutes from the 3/1/2023 meeting
Meeting Minutes from the 3/1/2023 meeting.
President Rod Johnson, Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout as officers were present (V.P. Eric Farry was back from Thailand but unable to attend due to a bug he picked up) when the Meeting started at 6:57 PM at the clubhouse in Creswell. There were 9 Members and No guests in attendance.
Dinner was prepared by Bill Dewey, President Rod Johnson and Past President Pat Dodson helping. It consisted of Lasagna, French bread, salads, Chips, Cookies, brown sugar apple pie!, and a drink- for $8.00!! Excellent choice again guys!
President Rod Johnson called the meeting to order. He asked for any old business:
Gary Ludeke rose to give a progress report on the YE model aircraft that the club has ordered. He has all the kits now and needs help in finding the YE’s who would be interested in building these RC aircraft. He said that between 6-10 kids aged 14-18 would be ideal. Several suggestions were made including the new STEM program that the Creswell High School is offering. He will report back after making some contacts. Shelly suggested an ad in the city newsletter along with contacting the social media person at the city. Gary said that eventually he will need to determine how much clubhouse space this will require and carve that out of the meeting room. A steering committee should be formed in order to find the kids that want to join.
About this time our wonderful airport manager, Shelly Humble came into the clubhouse and spoke about the grants she has received for Ham operations and security cameras. She noted that the Ham Radio club has offered to give instruction on the new ham radios when they arrive. She had a lot of information about other grants (Multi-purpose vehicle purchase) and as always was a whirlwind of activity and motion. Thanks!
She noted that on April 3rd we should expect a hard close on the airport for 3 weeks while the new lights and PAPI system is installed, along with the final painting. She also noted that the North Taxi Lane is now starting to be worked on and will hopefully be done by this summer with plans to put in 3 rows of T hangars.
Secretary Stout noted that dues are due for 2023, and several folks came forward with their $25. Thanks! If you can’t make it to a meeting, please send your check to: EAA Chapter 31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478
Remember our monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We need members to help make the fixings. Walt Weischedel is out of eggs so Bill Dewey will buy these and check on the rest of the supplies. The next breakfast will be on March 18th at the clubhouse starting at 9:00. Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Juice or Coffee for $8- a bargain!! See you there!!
The checkbook balance is now $1285.85.
Secretary Stout then gave a brief presentation about the LOP (Lean of Peak) and ROP (Rich of peak) procedures and rationale. Likely we have all (those of us without EGT gauges) been using LOP without understanding why. A real eye opener when you dig deeply into the why’s of using either method, and when.
The Monthly National Chapter Magazine was then shown on the screen.
There being no other business the meeting was adjourned by President Johnson at 8:05PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer
