Next Meeting is Special!

Our next monthly meeting in will be on Wednesday, February 7. BBQ at 6 p.m. and meeting at 7 p.m. I will be giving a presentation on the creation of the RV3, which members of Chapter 31 put together from parts of three airplanes and components from Van’s Aircraft. The airplane now resides in the OAHS museum in Cottage Grove. I have a collection of over 80 photographs showing the history of the construction of the project. While this aircraft will not be formally dedicated to the Van’s museum exhibit until Labor Day weekend this year, the airplane is on display now for museum visitors to see. I’m requesting that ALL of you who participated in any way on this project come to the meeting. I’m especially inviting Bridget and Virgil Pratt as it may be their last meeting with us, at least for some time! Virgil did some fine work on restoring the propeller and canopy. Bridget can be treated for the first time to a meal that she doesn’t have to prepare! Alan Weider worked tirelessly on the project and was the key person in recreating the paint scheme that was used on Van’s original RV3. I assure you it was an immense job! I would like to not only see that all who helped out are recognized, but also hope that those people can add input to the presentation and help tell the story of a very long road to success. I plan to write an article for Sport Aviation magazine and would like to take a picture or two, to go with the article, of all those who participated. I sincerely hope to see all of you there!

EAA Pancake Breakfast Saturday Jan 20th

New Year – New stuff but dependable, reliable breakfast every 3rd Saturday 9:00 AM till around 10:30 AM.

Pancakes, syrup, butter, eggs, salt, pepper, bacon, sausage, milk, coffee, orange juice, hot chocolate, all you can eat for only $5.00 bucks!   Bring a friend.  Take your spouse out for breakfast (cheapest date you will ever encounter),   At Creswell Airport, Clubhouse at S end of Hobby Field.  Talk Airplanes, Flying, Takeoffs, Landings, places to go & people to meet.  Rub elbows with other airplane enthusiasts!  

By the way, we will need someone to “step up the the plate” for our Monthly dinner meeting Feb 7th. Bridget will have all her cooking goodies already packed for moving, so we need volunteers.

Meeting Minutes from the 1/3/2018 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, January 3rd, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our amazing hosts Virgil and Bridget Pratt. We had a wonderful Lasagna with salad, French bread, Brownies and Apple Cake and drinks for only $5? See you at the next dinner/meeting for pulled pork!! Unfortunately, this will be the last meeting that Virgil and Bridget will be hosting, as they plan to retire in March. Thanks so much from everyone for all the wonderful meals you gave us during the past few years. You will be missed!!!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:50 PM.
President John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 14 members and guests in attendance.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, January 20th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts
at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal!

Bill Dewey noted that the flying club airplane (C-150) is done and ready to go. Now the flying club needs to finish organizing and begin to sign up members. Contact him if you are interested. 541-345-0480

President Kuehl began the program with a quick look back at all the programs that we enjoyed in 2017. He also noted that we flew 113 Young Eagles with 14 airplanes. He then gave out chapter service awards to several people who helped make 2017 a fun year! The MVP award went to the dynamic duo of Virgil and Bridge Pratt. Thanks again for all your wonderful meals!

Gary Ludeke also reported on a conversation he had with the Principle at Creswell High School about starting an aviation program there. Gary indicated his willingness to speak to groups of students, as a few other members will also. He is waiting on them now to confirm that they want this program.

He also gave an RV-3 update. The plane is now complete, and they have delivered it to the OAHS Museum in CG. There will be a formal acceptance ceremony this spring. The project pictures and struggles will be part of next months program in the clubhouse.

Other upcoming programs on the docket include: in March Reiner Decker will give a presentation on Jet engine development that he and his father worked on and Dave Eason will give an airspace review in April. It was agreed that Dr. Hansen would be a great speaker to explain (again) the Basic Med rules and how they are working after the first 8 months.

The matter of elections was then discussed. Gary Ludeke has agreed to be the VP for the next 2 years and help John as he remains President. The slate of officers was then presented to the group, moved to be accepted by Walt Weischedel and voted on. All officers were elected unanimously. Bill Dewey accepted the position of Quartermaster (to keep the pantry stocked for our breakfasts and dinners).

Treasurer Stout then gave a quick treasurers report. (We have $ 2730.69 in the checkbook as of 12/29/2017). He noted that we paid EAA national $570 for dues and insurance, and completed the clubhouse floor painting project (Thank again to the amazing John Kuehl for all this arduous work). The EPUD bill alone for the heat to cure the paint was $240!

With no other new or old business, Pres. John began to show a video on the Basler Aviation conversion of the DC-3 to a turbine powered hauler that takes its payload from 6500 lbs. to 11,000 lbs. and speed up to 240 knots. He also presented the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, which was appreciated by everyone.

There being no other business, President John then adjourned at 8:05 PM
