Meeting Minutes from the 9/7/2022 meeting
Meeting Minutes from the 9/7/2022 meeting.
President Rod Johnson, V.P. Eric Farry and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout as officers were present when the Meeting started at 7:05 PM at the clubhouse in Creswell. There were 14 Members and guests in attendance. Ben Grubb from Eugene Chapter 1457 and our speaker Dave Ullman were our guests.
Dinner was prepared by President Rod Johnson, Past President, Pat Dodson and Bill Dewey and consisted of Burgers, Hot Dogs, leaf salads, Chips, Cookies and a drink- for $8.00!! Next month we may be having another Costco Casserole, so watch your emails for notice.
President Rod Johnson called the meeting to order. He asked for any old business:
Pat Dodson gave a brief report on the runway work being done by Wildish. They won’t be tearing up the runway until next week but have been prepping the site all this week. There was no impact to the clubhouse or parking for the meeting.
Remember our monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We need members to help make the fixings. Walt Weischedel will bring his eggs and Bill Dewey will check on the rest of the supplies. The next breakfast will be on September 17th at the clubhouse starting at 9:00. Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Juice or Coffee for $8- a bargain!! See you there!!
The checkbook balance is now $1576.83
Doug Kindred gave a quick report on the just past Great Oregon Homebuilt fly-in at Cottage Grove. Lots of nice planes including Kevin Miller who brought in the new Van’s RV-14. Food truck was awesome and will be invited back. It was also noted that the WAM Fly-in in Hood River will be this weekend. Might be a windy event so be very careful and go early if you decide to go by air.
Gary Ludeke then rose to ask the group if he could hold his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award ceremony at the November meeting. Everyone agreed that this would be a great plan. The meeting will be on the 2nd of November, which is one day after Gary turns 80 and becomes a flying Octogenarian. A great guy and worthy recipient of this award!
There was a brief discussion about the recent tragic crash of Dennis and Amy Jackson near Scio in their RV-8. It appears they may have been doing low level aerobatics over their relatives houses. Let’s wait for the full report before jumping to conclusions.
There being no other business, President Johnson introduced our speaker for the evening, Dave Ullman and his presentation “The future of electric airplanes”. Dave is a retired professor, aeronautical engineer and designer and has a real desire to work on lifting properties of directed fans over wing sections. He has in the past built a Velocity airplane and recently purchased a wrecked Jabiru which he repaired and then added several ducted fans to the leading edge. He is calling this modified aircraft a Jabirwatt.
He is a member of EAA 292 in Independence (Meeting this Saturday at 9:00). Their members have a full sized DH-2 with a VW engine and the only flying Bristol Bulldog in the country. He has been working with Barnaby Wayne (of Kit Plane renown) on various designs which he hopes to refine in the near future. His graph on EVTOL aircraft design and the way that they are evolving was fascinating. He gave a great presentation about where electric aircraft are today and the potential futures for them. It seems that battery power is the limiting factor and will be for the foreseeable future. He believes that battery power is increasing at a rate of about 8% per year but will take a decade or two to reach the milestone needed to make electric aircraft viable. He believes that helicopters and most IC engine aircraft will all but disappear when this happens. Thanks Dave!! Great presentation.
There being no other business the meeting was adjourned at 8:15PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer
