December meeting Minutes and an invitation

The meeting was held as normal with dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs and Chili along with some wonderful apple cake from Melinda and attended by 10 members. The introduction part of the meeting was started with a short story from Tom Cunninghams’ daughter about the Notre Dame bell ringer and was really funny. Other introductions were of the normal sort and we found that Brent Henning had bagged a black bear very near his home south of Cottage Grove. The bear had been eating lots of apples and the description of handling the bear meat and the effect of an apple diet was great. Gary Ludeke advised that John Stahr had invited any interested Chapter 31 member to attend their Christmas party at 6pm Saturday Dec. 17. RSVP will be needed to plan for the food. Also they will supply the main dish of chicken, pork or shrimp with casual attire and potluck dishes > People with A – L last names should bring a dessert or appetizer and M- Z a salad, pasta dish or Veggie. There will also be a white elephant exchange with max value of $15. To confirm with John, our members need to contact John by E Mail ( jstahr@stahrdesign.com )

Old business covered was that I will contact Kaiser Metal Buildings regarding the construction of the pole building for our proposed memorial garden – John Rowell the architect advised that their engineered building would be the only thing that might be a hang up for the building inspectors at Creswell. Before spring I will plan to get the design finalized and work with Shelly to get it presented to the city for their approval. With any luck we will be able to build it this late spring and summer . New business included a discussion about using the Young Eagle program to aid with the Boy Scout Aviation Merit badge program. When I was in Colorado, my grandson invited me to his boy scout troop meeting – it was a lot of fun and really impressive to see the group of scouts and find that they had 9 Eagle scouts in their troop. Last Year their troop sponsored a Aviation merit badge trip to Calif. to a glider school and the scouts accomplished the requirements for the award. Obviously their troop wants to continue offering assistance to their members wanting a aviation merit badge & I just read that EAA has signed a letter of intent to work with the national Boy Scout officials to improve the EAA assistance with this program. On our way back from Colorado, Dee and I stopped at Hood River and I discussed the EAA / BSA possibilities with Donna at their volunteer program and found that they would be very interested in a big deal scout camp out / merit badge program at their facilities and will in the near future visit with the scout office here in Eugene to see what they think. Rusty advised that the Creswell scouts troop was also very active and would be good to include in our program. Obviously if this comes together the Hood River chapter will need some help and if we get a big response from the scouts, it could result in a big deal camp out at the WAAM facilities.

Another interesting part of our meeting with a short talk from Tom Preuss regarding Replica Fighters , kits now available, engines for these scaled down WW! – 20′ 30′ and WWII flying machines. It was interesting to see and hear about some of the really great workmanship these builders are now flying.

With no Christmas party or mid month Saturday breakfast, our next meeting will be Wednesday January 4, 2012.

Best for a very Merry Christmas and a great 2012. Bill
