Meeting Minutes from the 11-2-16 meeting
EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, November 2nd, 2016
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by President John Kuehl. We had hamburgers, potato salad, chips, fudge/caramel brownies and a drink for only $5? WOW!! . Don’t miss the next meeting dinner!!
The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 7:00:50 PM. President John Kuehl, VP Bill Johnson and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 18 members and no guests in attendance (except our speaker).
Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, November 19th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so.
The old business was called for and the discussion started about the upcoming Christmas party. John Stahr, of Chapter 1457 in Eugene has asked John if they could use the clubhouse for the party. He said yes, of course. The date is still to be announced.
Past President Gary Ludeke gave a quick report on 1) the RV-3 project (keeps getting stalled but he will be working on it this month), 2) the beginning of the flying club (outside of EAA Chapter 31’s activities). The flying club is getting close to the number of potential members needed to start, and so a consensus on which aircraft to buy will be made. Rusty Bartel has offered his C-150 as a potential Club Aircraft. Both Gary and Bill Dewey will spark plug this effort, with Gary giving instruction and BFR’s and Bill turning wrenches with his A/P license. Thanks Guys!!
Past member Daniel Cathey is offering his Volmer Sportsman and Clipper for sale, as health problems are causing him to give up active flying.
There being no other business, President John introduced Robert Hamilton, President of Dynon Avionics to present his products to the group. He has been with them for the past 8 years. It was started in 2000 by John Terand, the Chief Technology Officer of Cypress Semi Conductor.
He then proceeded to show the group all the latest EFIS panels that they produce, up to and including a live demo unit of their new Skyview series of displays. He went over the history of the company and the many challenges they faced in order to create and manufacture the units that are available today. I am sure we would have had a lot more folks at the meeting but for the fact that the Cubs were playing game 7 of the World Series (which they won!!)
Thanks Robert for the great talk and opening everyone’s eyes to the new and much better glass panels that are being made today. I only wish I had an electrical system to use them!!
Being out of time President John did not run the Chapter Video from EAA National.
There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:45 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Nov 2nd Meeting Dynon Avionics The Magic Behind Glass Panels
This month we have the PRESIDENT of Dynon Avionics speaking at our Chapter 31.
Title: The Magic Behind Your Glass Panel
Presentation Summary:Learn about the technology that makes electronic flight information systems affordable and practical for small general aviation aircraft. A better understanding of the internal workings of these instruments will illustrate how they offer reliability, affordable redundancy, and greater situational awareness than venerable analog flight instruments. Pilots of even 2-seat VFR aircraft will learn how they can improve safety and situational awareness by making use of the latest in Glass Panel avionics. Pilots of IFR aircraft will learn how to achieve more capability and greater redundancy at lower cost. Learn not only the benefits of this technology, but also some of the safety and training issues relevant in making the transition from traditional analog instruments to glass panel.
Robert Hamilton – President Robert’s first hundred hours as PIC was in a beautifully restored J-3 cub. This was in 1973, even before the plane was an antique! After earning Electrical Engineering and MBA degrees he spent most of his career as a senior manager at Fluke Electronics making test equipment, and was too busy to do much flying. In 2002 he decided to get back into aviation and started an aviation software company. Joining Dynon Avionics in 2008 as the Director of Sales and Marketing, in 2012 he became President. He now flies a Glasair Sportsman he helped build at Glasair’s “Two-Week-To-Taxi” program.
Dinner Burgers, Dogs, Salad, Dessert, Drinks 6:00 PM $5.00 What a deal

EAA Flying Club
Well, I messed up again! I got a call from a member who tried to email me by replying to the email notice from the chapter web page. THAT WILL NOT WORK! I meant to give everyone my personal email address to respond with an expression of interest in the club and I FORGOT to put it in the post! If you are interested as discussed in my prior post, please email me at:
RV6AN200GL@charter.net. Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused if you were trying to respond. . . . . Gary Ludeke

EAA Chapter 31 Flying Club
Well, as an old friend (all my friends are old!) of mine once said, “It’s time to fish or cut bait” regarding the flying club. We’ve located an airplane (Rusty Bartel’s) Cessna 150 that could be quite suitable for the club and need to take the next step which is finding out if there truly is enough interest and enthusiasm to make the club a reality. Obviously, the more people in the club, the less the initial cost to acquire the airplane will be, but the harder it will be to schedule it when you want to fly. This is something that can be discussed at an organizational meeting. I’m happy to act as the contact point for now to set up a meeting. I would like all of you with a SERIOUS interest in being part of the club to send me an email at <rv6an200gl@charter.net> and let me know your availability to attend a meeting sometime, preferably before the end of this month. Please include both days and times that would work best for you. Although nothing has been discussed with Rusty in terms of the sale price of his airplane, my estimate based on “VREF” is that something in the neighborhood of $17,000 would be a fair price to offer for the plane. You can do the math to determine what it would cost to buy it based on how many “charter members” are in the club at the time of purchase. Also, of course, there will be hangar/tie-down, insurance, maintenance and direct operating expenses that will be affected by the number of members in the club.
So, please let me know in the next few days if you’re interested. Those who are members of both Chapter 31 and 1457, please pass the word to the Chapter 1457 members you think might be interested. I hope I receive a lot of emails! . . . . Gary Ludeke
