Meeting Minutes from the 11/7/2012 gathering
11/7/2012 Meeting
The dinner meeting started at 6:00 with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili and Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salad! She also provided a wonderful cake, and Bill Dewey came with a large container of homemade cookies. Thanks to the both of them! Come next month and bring a friend!
Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present.
The 15 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month” talk. Guests included: Pat Dodson Welcome to all!!
The next breakfast is on November 17th.
Gary Ludeke rose to suggest that we have a survey of all the chapter members, and for that matter, all the local pilots (through Survey Monkey perhaps) in our area. He would ask questions like: Do you own your own aircraft, would you participate in fly-out activities, how can Chapter meetings be of most interest to you, would you be interested in forming a flying club (outside of EAA of course). He is going to pursue the steps necessary to make this happen and report back on the results.
Tom Cunningham reported that, with Walt’s help, they have fixed the brakes and his airplane is now being taxi tested in preparation for a flight. Wish him luck!
Walt Weischedel reported that all work has stopped on his RV-12 due to a gear re-design hold up. He hopes that Van’s will have revised plans soon.
It was reported that the PD-2 Road able Glasair Sportsman GS-2 that was being taxi tested on the airport was seen on the freeway this last week.
Bill Dewey is going to have his daughter AutoCAD his drawing for the plans for the memorial
garden. He will bring this AutoCAD file back from his trip to his daughters home in Colorado later this month and present them to the board. We should be able to begin construction soon after.
The passing of Rick Friberg was remembered by a few of the folks that were at the memorial. Rick was a very seasoned TWA pilot with perhaps 40,000 hours. His Soneri was reportedly the first propeller driven aircraft he ever flew. A great guy and a hell of a pilot.
Bill Dewey reported that the Chapter 31 Christmas Party is tentatively set for December 15th this year. If not enough folks can participate, it is suggested that we contact the Eugene Chapter, who will be having their Christmas Party on December 8th at John Starr’s shop. They can handle a few more couples, just not a lot. We will be putting a questionnaire on line and email this to all the members for their input before the final decision is made.
Tom Cunningham asked if there would be a pumpkin drop in Creswell or perhaps Walker field. It was suggested that he contact Daniel Cathey regarding Walker field and Shelly at Creswell. He also wondered if we can contact the Young Eagles that flew these past few summers and ask if they would be interested in a ground school. We could also offer it to any other person (regardless of age) that might have an interest. He is going to contact EAA National to see if a database is available for these Young Eagles and see if we can contact them.
That being all the old and new business,
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm

Meeting Minutes from the 10/3/2012 Meeting
10/3/2012 Meeting
The meeting started at 6:00 with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili and Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salad! Come next month and bring a friend!
Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present.
The 16 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month” talk. Welcome to all!!
Guests included: Pat Dodson and his father Fred- Long time Creswell flyers and co-owners of Mid State Industrial- Sweeping. Pat is still looking for someone who is building an RV-12 or other small, simple airplane that he and his dad can build together. Also, Jim Diehl was here (he has an RV-9A Flying)
The next breakfast is on October 20th.
Tom Cunningham reported that the fuel leak that stopped us from getting his airplane started last month is now fixed, and, with the help of a little starter fluid and his Armstrong starter, he has gotten the engine running.
The meeting was temporarily adjourned so that everyone could go outside and see the PD-2 Roadable Glasair Sportsman GS-2 that was being taxi tested on the airport. We got a very nice tour of the aircraft and many questions answered by Trey Johnson (see planedriven.com) if you weren’t at the meeting. This is EAA at its best!
Bill Dewey is still waiting for approval of the plans for the memorial garden before he can get started. During the discussion, it was debated that if the memorial rock that is in front of the clubhouse could be placed there without any approval, it wouldn’t seem necessary that we would need one for our memorial garden. (Update: Bill informed me that the airport commission is giving approval for the memorial garden at another site on the airport that should work even better than the site we choose. Looks like we will be starting the project in the next 2 weeks!!)
It was noted with sadness the passing of Rick Friberg, the sparkplug who got the Creswell Fly-In back up and running last year. Tailwinds forever Rick.
Bill Dewey reported that the Chapter 31 Christmas Party is on December 15th this year. Stay tuned for further details.
AOPA will be having a Safety Seminar at the Red Lion on the 22nd of October.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm

Minutes from 9/5/2012 Meeting
The meeting started at 6:00 with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili and Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Salad and (again) a wonderful homemade Applesauce cake with fantastic topping! You missed another good one if you didn’t make the meeting!! Come next month and bring a friend!
Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM by Sec./Tres. Randy Stout. President Bill Dewey and his wife were on a trip around the country, but will be back for the October festivities.
The 15 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month” talk. Welcome to all!!
Guests included: Peter Kolek, a free spirit without any email address and Pat Dodson, co-owner of Mid State Industrial- Sweeping. Pat was trying to find someone who is building and RV-12, and he came to the right place.
The next breakfast is on September 15th.
Dave Petersen then gave a YE report. It seems that we flew 46 kids and he and Melinda and the crew served about 100 breakfasts and 100 lunches at the Creswell Air Fair. He asked the treasurer to write a check to the City of Creswell for $500 as a donation of our proceeds from the Air Fair (done and given to Shelly- ed.)
Dave thanked all of his volunteers and noted that EAA has instituted the “Eagle Flight” program for those adults who would like to get involved with aviation. This program has specific pilot guidelines and a one page synopsis, which Dave has. The pilots who are involved with this are covered by insurance and it does not need to be a special event with pre-authorization to have this insurance. The pilots do need to be National EAA members, and local membership is not required, but expected. The person who is given the flight will receive a 6 month membership to EAA. See Dave for details.
Shelly Humble then gave a Creswell Air Fair report. She said it was a great success and the planning is starting for next years event. The wrap up meeting will be held next week. One of the areas of improvement discussed was how to keep more people here for the Saturday night dinner and auction. She said that the event will send the city $2400 cash (plus our $500) less a small seed money fund for next years’ event. She noted that this event has created a very positive atmosphere at the airport, which is a great side benefit from all the hard work. A fall event (pumpkin drop??) is in the planning stages.
Shelly also noted that Creswell has received a $160,000 grant from Connect Oregon for the AWOS A system (no wind info), which when installed will not cost the city any money. She asked everyone if they would return their volunteer shirts (cleaned please!) to hold down the costs for next years’ event.
Bill Dewey is still waiting for approval of the plans for the memorial
garden before he can get started.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm and everyone went over to Tom Cunninghams hangar in order to help him with a fuel problem with his airplane. Although this lasted until too dark to do much good, it was a fun change from sitting on our pants and listening to me drone on.

Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 17 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month. Welcome to all!!
Guests included Jerry Narcia, our neighbor to the south, who has finally given up with his through the fence airport access, as the city is charging him $800/Year rent. He felt very badly treated and wished to let us know about this unfortunate situation.
Bob Severns reported that his plane was run into while attending the Mulino Pancake Breakfast this last month. Not much damage, but still a disappointment. Brad Chapman noted that he may have a buyer for his Thorpe T-18. Rich Locke has a set of plans for sale for an RV-4. Call him at Mid Valley Metals in Springfield if interested.
There was then a sign report from Rusty Bartel. He is done and the sign is up!! Total cost came in around the $275 range. Good work and thanks to Rusty, Tony Horvath and all the folks who helped make this a great project!
The next breakfast is on August 18th in conjunction with the upcoming Creswell Fly-In. President Bill then began asking for volunteers for Fly-In. The August 17-18-19th event may have as many as 200 meals served by Dave and Melinda Petersen and their helpers. The YE event goes from 9:00-12:00 on the 18th. Meeting Minutes for the July 11th Meeting
The meeting started at 6:00 without (sadly)Melinda Petersen’s famous chili but with Brats for those who love Milwaukee’s best (not the beer) and BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, BBQ beans, chips and a drink for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!
Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 16 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month. Long time member Karl Entenmann, a life member, was able to attend the meeting and get some help from Walt Weischedel on a problem. Ben Hallert discussed his recent Raccoon problem and his creative solutions. Chris Winslow became our newest member. Bruce Lamont made a welcome but rare appearance. Welcome to all!!
There was then a sign report from Rusty Bartel. He is getting the permits and will call the Secretary with the estimated costs when he gets them.
The clubhouse lease is set to expire at the end of the year. Bruce Lamont reported that the Oregon Air and Space Museum pays $1 per year to the city because of their ongoing educational activities. It seemed to most of the members in the group that our $10/ Year lease should remain a reasonable amount due to all of the aviation activities that we allow in the clubhouse for so much of the community. Randy will begin to meet with Shelly to discuss the upcoming renewal.
Bill Dewey and Rusty Bartel then reported on the completion of the Oregon Air Tour. They had a great time even though they had to change plans at the last minute due to weather problems in Bandon (?). Rusty put in 13 hours of flying, which is more than he has ever flown is such a short period of time. Bill wandered all over Oregon and had a “Dee”lightful time with his wife.
The next breakfast is on July 21st. On that same weekend, Bruce Lamont reported that the Oregon Air and Space Museum will be holding their annual air show (static only) at the Eugene Airport, which will include 1 A-26, 4 F-16’s and lots of other birds, cars and activities. Be sure to attend both.
Doug Kindred reported on the recent Swift Fly-In at Cottage Grove. He said that they had 20 Swifts and a great time.
President Bill then began asking for volunteers for the upcoming Creswell Fly-In. The August 17-18-19th event may have as many as 200 meals served by Dave and Melinda Petersen and their helpers. The YE event goes from 9:00-12:00 on the 18th. Many volunteers signed up with Bill at the meeting for various activities.
Bill Dewey then reported that he is now waiting for approval of the plans for the memorial garden before he can get started.

The 17 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Jerry Krause introduced by Gary Ludeke. Jerry is building a Kolb Firestar with Gary’s help. Welcome to all!!
As the meeting was to be short, President Bill accepted Jerry’s invitation to take a look at his Firestar, and the meeting was adjourned so everyone could see how work is progressing.
After this brief interruption, meeting was brought to order and:
Rick Friberg then spoke about the upcoming August 18th fly-in event. He explained that there will be a fly market (with a swap meet with $20-$25 tables), flying contests, model airplane flying, antique cars, possibly the National Guard flying by or displaying, parking and concessions. He asks anyone who has an interest to show up at 3:30 at the clubhouse in Creswell on each Tuesday for further planning sessions. They have set a goal of $40,000 to be able to help the City eliminate their losses at the airport. We will have our YE event that day also.
Ben Hallert then gave the club info on the new robot that he built. It allows him to see what is happening at the workshop that he is a member/partner in on a real time basis. He hopes to have it capable of flying a drone by early next year. Drone strikes will be on sale at that time- 6 for the price of 4.
Art Aquis brought in some info on the Wolf Aviation Fund Scholarship.
Ton Cunningham spoke about his visit in Antelope Valley for their fly-in- He will be putting pictures on the web site.
There was no sign report from Rusty Bartel
The next breakfast is on June 16th.

Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail: EAA Chapter 31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478
President Bill commented that one of the 2 project we have been working on has been completed, thanks to Dave Petersen, and it was to 1) Pressure Wash the building (he also fixed the outside light). The second is to 2) replace the Chapter 31 sign on the building. He has spoken to Shelly and she is waiting on a written plan to take to the city for approval. Rusty now has the file that will allow his sign maker the ability to make a sign when we receive approval.
Pres. Bill also said that we will have an answer by the next meeting from the Creswell Planning Commission regarding the memorial park.
Urban Moore then spoke about the controversy regarding his operation and the City of Creswell. He brought a aerial photo of the airport and explained how and why the drop zone is where it is, and why that is safe. He also suggested that the City of Creswell turn the airport into a Port Authority or Commission that would run the airport.
Shelly Humble then spoke about why the City of Creswell needs the revenue from the airport to increase (to mitigate the losses) and what historically led to this situation.
Rick Friberg then spoke about the possibility of a fly-in event in Creswell set for August 18th. He expects that there will be a fly market (with a swap meet with $20-$25 tables), flying contests, model airplane flying, antique cars, possibly the National Guard flying by or displaying, parking and concessions. He asks anyone who has an interest to show up at 3:30? At the clubhouse in Creswell for further planning sessions. Minutes from April 2012 Meeting
The meeting started at 6:00 with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili, BBQ
hamburgers and hot dogs, chips and a drink for only $5 !! Come next
month and bring a friend!
Meeting called to order at 7:12 PM by President Bill Dewey with
Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 24 members and guests in
attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting
thing happened this last month”. Guests included Art Acquist, Tom
Preuss, Shelly Humble. Welcome to all!!
Gary Ludeke talked about his work that he is doing on Jerry Krause’s
Kolb Firestar.
A request was made at the meeting by Roger Welch’s daughter to have
Chapter 31 members donate charity flights for the upcoming Creswell
School auction. Due to complications with the FAR’s it was decided
that Gary Ludeke would generously give a flight to the auction, in
President Bill Dewey’s generously donated airplane, as he is a CFI and
can give instruction during that time.
Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see
him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail: EAA Chapter
31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478 Thanks to Bill
Skillern, Sid Voorhees and Ben Hallert for renewing at the meeting.
Guest Shelly Humble then spoke about the many things going on at the
Creswell Airport. They include, but aren’t limited to, asking for part
of the 50 Million connect Oregon grant for an AWOS (non- precision,
level 2 need) approach ($200,000) and using the Pavement Maintenance
Program (Gas Tax Proceeds) and AIP Match (level 3 need) for $183,000
work of work on the runway (slurry Seal 90%). She spoke about the 9
ea. 40×40 box hangars and the 13 conventional T hangars that are
planned for the west side of the north apron. ($500,000) There is
13.3 million available for projects throughout the state, and the
projects total 13.9 million. She didn’t talk about the ongoing dispute
with Urban Moore and the skydivers, as this is now under an
administrative action with the FAA that requires a formal response.
She did mention that new skydiving regs should be posted by the FAA by
the end of the year. Thanks for all the info you could give us!!
President Bill commented on the 2 projects we will be tackling this
year (besides the memorial area) and they are 1) Pressure Wash the
building and 2) replace the Chapter 31 sign on the building. He has
spoken to Shelly and she is waiting on a written plan to take to the
city for approval.
Rusty Bartel is still trying to build the new sign and now may have
the jpeg he needs. Rusty also suggested that the group paint “EAA #31”
on the roof of the clubhouse as identification for pilots who fly
over. Shelly asked that we run the plan through her first before any
work is done in order to comply with all sign codes.
The next breakfast is on April 21st. This is the same day, but it will
be lunchtime not breakfast, that the Oregon Historical Society will be
inducting Henry “Hank” Troh into the hall of fame. Their meeting will
be at the Village Green in Cottage Grove. See if you can attend both!!
