Meeting Minutes from 10/2/2013 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 2nd, 2013

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, drinks and a wonderful zucchini bread for dessert for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 11 members in attendance (Sadly no guests) then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month” Gary Ludeke flew his Firestar at 42deg.F Burrrr!

Next Chapter breakfast is October 19th at the clubhouse. At that time, we will expect several In and out of town members of the OACAC to be here early in anticipation of the 1:00 meeting at the clubhouse. Be sure to make the breakfast and then attend the meeting and join the OACAC if you want to be a part of their fun.

Bill Dewey mentioned that he has been president for a number of years, and would like to step down at the end of the year. The group agreed to open up nominations for the next President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer at the next meeting, and vote at the January meeting. At the November meeting, names will be brought forth and presented to the membership. Please be ready to serve if you are called, and offer to serve if you have an interest and have not yet been nominated. Often we find people who have an interest but have not expressed it- so no one knows. Please be that person who can provide leadership and organization for the next few years. E-mail me or Bill Dewey if you wouldn’t mind serving in some capacity starting in 2014.

Bill Dewey opened up the topic of an EAA Christmas party. Most in attendance seemed to feel that a joint party with Chapter 1457 would be the best result, so it was suggested that Bill call the President of that chapter and offer to join the festivities. He will report back the results at the next meeting.

The skydiver compromise that the City of Creswell has reached was the next topic of discussion. Not the right place here to put down all the comments, but it appeared that the club will support whatever the FAA decides will work well at the airport.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:58 pm

Minutes from September 2013 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, September 4th, 2013

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, a wonderful carrot cake dessert !! and a drink for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:00 PM  by Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout.  President Bill Dewey was on a trip.

The 19 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Raliegh (?) Williams, who spoke about his life of flying everything from a J-3 to a T-33, including time in country as a FAO, then an IP in 170’s and other civilian birds.  Also, we hosted Jon Rau from Techtronics, who was just passing through, and knew where to find a good time and good people!

Next Chapter breakfast is September 21st at the clubhouse.

Dave Petersen then gave a good presentation on the recent Creswell Air Fair, and how the club made out. He said that we flew 42 YE kids, and would have flown more except for an hour shutdown that occurred due to weather about half way through. He thanked Don Cole and the Civil Air Patrol for their respective efforts. The breakfast and lunch broke even and he gave the Treasurer the receipts of $409 for deposit. He mentioned that the expenses incurred also gave us a big surplus in pop and food that we will use during the next few months. He suggested that we raise prices at the fly-in breakfast to $7, and Hamburgers to $3 and drinks to $1. Of the people in attendance at the meeting, 7 went to the fly-in and the suggestions for improvement included more advertising and choosing a date early enough that volunteers can schedule their vacation. It was hoped that the club will receive a fly-in report from the City of Creswell when it is done.

Gary Ludeke then spoke about his trip to the Seattle Museum of Flight, and invited everyone to go over to his hangar and look at his homemade (is there any other?) hoist. It was decided to take him up on his offer as soon as the meeting was over, which lit a fire under the presiding officer to get done.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:49 pm and the meeting was moved to Gary’s hangar to look at his ingenious new hoist. This device allows him to keep an extra airplane in his hangar. Great work Gary!

Meeting Minutes from 6/5/2013 Meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili ), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $5!! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Bill Dewey, with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 17 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month”. Jim Beale noted that he now has 88 hours on his new RV and a new Ipad holder. Allen Weider has his RV-9 flying now, with 7 hours. Starting his test sequence. He has a 60 Mi. radius from Corvallis as his test area. (Cruise speed for 1 hour) Tom Cunningham has parts for  a S-12 for sale- wings that need recover, all the metal, out of date BRS. He also brought in a poster of the Spruce Goose.

Aluminum Overcast, EAA’s B-17 was at the Eugene airport on 5/16-17 and several of our members helped out. Some even got a ride on the repositioning flight to Bend.

It was noted that Roseburg airport will have their “Wings and Wheels” event on July 6th from 9-5

It was noted that Corvallis will hose the Collins Foundations B-17, B-24 and P-51 as they sell flights this season. Head up there if you can.

Eugene will have their annual Run/Walk and airport day this weekend. There is mention of $1.00 off per gallon of Avgas for all who fly in. YE flights will also be given, so any pilot who would like to volunteer, please show up if you can.

The Creswell Air Fair will be on August 9-10-11 this year, with the big day Saturday the 10th. EAA Chapter 31 will be doing the breakfasts and lunches as usual. We should have an RV-12 and RV-14 at the event. South Lane RC Club asked if they could hold a meeting for all the local area RC clubs at the event.

President Bill Dewey then spoke about the memorial area. He was able to finish the propeller monument and now needs gravel for the picnic area. He noted that he and several others will be working on the culvert, retaining wall and general clean up this Friday from 9-10AM or so. He still needs a web jockey to handle the sales and processing for the bricks to go into the walkway. Ben Hallert, due to his not being present, was nominated, 2nded and duly elected to take on this challenge. Anybody going to tell him?

Dave Petersen reminded the group of the OPA convention in Albany this August 24th. He also asked Bill to take in the cardboard in the clubhouse for recycling, and Randy to take in the cans for a donation. As there was some controversy as to where the funds from these cans would go, a donation to the School Supply Fund at Hamlin Middle School was chosen as the beneficiary.

Next Chapter 31 breakfast will be June 15th. More Air Fair info will be available at that time.

Dave Eason brought in a A-10 Warthog shell casing for show and tell. Looks like 20 MM?

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:47 pm

Meeting minutes from the 5/1/2013 meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili and a nice lemon cake), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $5!! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Bill Dewey, with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 20 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Eugene 1457 Chapter member John Stahr (who brought posters to give away), Jerry Krauss, a guest of Gary Ludeke’s and owner of a Kolb Firestart (see below) and Dave Eason’s neighbor, Dale Nygren.  Jim Beale noted that he now has 80 hours on his new RV.

John Stahr mentioned that Aluminum Overcast, EAA’s B-17 will be at the Eugene airport on 5/16-17, and they could use some volunteers to help with that and with signing up YE’s during the stay. He also noted that there will be an open house at the Eugene airport on June 8th, which will include a YE event.

It was noted that Roseburg airport will have their “Wings and Wheels” event on July 6th from 9-5

Gary Ludeke reported that the Kolb Firestar project he has been working on is now licensed and has fast taxied and is ready for flight tomorrow. Tom Cunningham, who also has a Kolb, is also newly licensed and ready for flight. They should have had them in the air by the time these minutes are read.

In addition, Alan Weider has his new RV-9 licensed and ready for first flight. Our Chapter is getting them in the air!!

The Creswell Air Fair will be on August 9-10-11 this year, with the big day Saturday the 10th. Put this on your calendar! (Mine has my son getting married in Seattle that weekend!!) EAA Chapter 31 will be doing the breakfasts and lunches as usual. It was noted that the flour bombing and spot landing contests need to be separate from the YE flights so that pilots can participate in both. Also noted was the Fly-Market needs to be much better advertised and located. Meetings will begin this next week (Monday?)

President Bill Dewey then spoke about the memorial area. He, along with Rusty Bartel, Dave Eason, Dave Heisley and Alan Weider have finished the retaining wall and much of the brick walkway. They were far enough along to move the Memorial Rock (that has been at the EAA clubhouse this last few years) and set it in a nice area. Landscaping will begin immediately, and Bill is working on the Propeller Monument to be erected within a few months. Phase 2 will include a flagpole and an engraved brick program that will allow anyone to have a place to remember their loved one. This looks like it will become a nice focal place for the airport and a great area to have memorial services for our flying friends as the go west. Good work to all the folks who helped make this a reality.

Dave Petersen reminded the group of the OPA convention in Albany this August 24th.

Chapter 902 (Mulino) asked if our group would transfer our YE credits to them to help send one of their kids to the Air Academy. A show of hands indicated that no one objected.

Next Chapter 31 breakfast will be May 18th. More Air Fair info will be available at that time.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:57 pm

Meeting Minutes from 4/3/2013 Meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili and a wonderful spice cake), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $5!! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 7:07 PM by President Bill Dewey, with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 16 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included past member Tom Pruess, still working on his ¾ scale mustang with the Geo 3 cylinder engine and he has a Fly Baby project started.

The group was donated (I didn’t get the name, but will by next meeting) a twin engine instrument flight simulator. Hopefully we will get it up and running by next meeting.

After intros, we adjourned to go see Gary Ludeke’s Kolb Firestar project, nearing completion. He has done some high speed taxi tests. He asked if anyone had a inspection scope to check out some rivets before he actually took off. (see the end of this newsletter for his answer)

Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail:  EAA Chapter 31, 86277   Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR   97478 Thanks to several
people for renewing at the meeting.

President Bill Dewey discussed the latest plan for the memorial area. He and Rusty Bartel have finished the retaining wall, and are prepping the walkway for the brick. Dave Eason brought in a Brick that is  available locally, and may be priced the same as the out of town vendor. He is still working on it. The next work session on the memorial area will be after the May breakfast meeting on May 20th.

It was noted that on May 16-20th, the Eugene EAA chapter 1457 will be hosting Aluminum Overcast in Eugene.

Gary Ludeke then reported on the results of his survey monkey outreach to the members. This survey attempted to find out how the group can improve its’ membership activities and add value to the programs that we put on. He presented an in-depth report that he received back from the 18 responses he got. We will discuss these results during the next few meetings.

Rusty Bartel reported that the new interim Creswell City Manager is a General Aviation/Airport Supporter.

There being no other business, we moved into our series of “Homebuilders Corner”.

Mat Northway then rose and showed the group a $100(?) bore scope that he purchased a while back. You hold it up to your eye and can see into an area about 18” quite clearly.

Dave Eason showed us a bore scope he received from his Dentist (gratis!) that looked like an anal probe, and probably works well for that also. It had a great picture and a 90 degree offset with very good detail but you could not go into the hole very deeply.

Walt Weischedel then showed the group his $120 Harbor Freight inspection camera, which was very easy to use and made movies or took pictures.

Randy Stout then showed his $150 Costco inspection camera, which the same features of Walts’ in addition to an extension wand and detachable screen for viewing. Each tool performed well, some were easier to use than others.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:19 pm

Meeting Minutes for 3/6/2013 Meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, a wonderful pound cake dessert !! and a drink for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!
Business meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by President Bill Dewey, with Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout also present.

The 22 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Karl Sheffeld (??) and Mike McKoll (?)who is working on a 1000 wing frame.

Roger then rose to discuss the AWOS system that Creswell is trying to get. It appears that they are about $15,000 short of the needed funds as of yet. He suggested that the chapter donate some funds for this project now as it will be much more expensive later.

Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail:  EAA Chapter 31, 86277   Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR   97478 Thanks to several people for renewing at the meeting.

President Bill Dewey discussed the latest plan for the memorial area. He noted that Bricks will be available for purchase with you or a loved one’s name on them in 3 lines of text for $50 for the 4×8 and $100 for the 8×8 size. You can also add art to the brick for $6. He hoped that we would be moving dirt by next month.  Bill will install the propeller feature with 6×6 posts of PT wood, and a spinner.

Dave Peteresen brought in another new IPAD app. (Wing X Pro 7 with a Bad Elf GPS attachment) and noted that it was $100/ Year ($200 for 3 years). Ben has Skycharts Pro, which he paid $20 and gets updates often. Somehow, they forgot to keep billing him, but they keep sending him updates.

It was noted that on May 16-20th, the Eugene EAA chapter 1457 will be hosting Aluminum Overcast in Eugene. They are also suggesting that we join them in a Young Eagle event coming up (I don’t believe I got a date on that) Everyone was asked to join them if they could.

Next Chapter breakfast is March 16th at the clubhouse.

Ben Hallert gave a very interesting presentation on the Raspberry Pie computer board that is now available for $39. It seems that it can do anything but write a novel, but they are working on that. See him on any Friday at “Maker Space” on McKinley St. between 5th and 7th (near Redundant Cartridge), in his workshop. He sells memberships in the workshop so you can use the tools whenever you like, or come to open nights on Friday to see what is going on.

Gary Ludeke asked the group if they felt it was a good idea to start a survey money on how the group can improve its’ membership activities and add value to the programs that we put on.

There being no other business, we moved into our series of “Homebuilders Corner”. Mat Northway then rose and showed the group a nice, cheap RPM measuring device called a GloBee. It costs only $12 and works well for model and full size airplane propellers.

Secretary Stout had asked the group to bring in any bore scopes that they have for the next meeting. Everyone, including the Secretary forgot, so next month, for sure, these will be evaluated, compared and their capabilities explored.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:29 pm

Meeting Minutes from February 6th, 2013 Meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 (Happily with Melinda Petersen’s famous chili), BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, BROWNIES!! and a drink for only $5 !! Come next month and bring a friend!

Business meeting called to order at 6:48 PM by Sec./Tres. Randy  Stout. President Bill Dewey was on a trip to visit relatives.

The 17 members (sadly no guests) in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What
exciting thing happened this last month”. The new Ipad app. (Fore Flight) was discussed and noted that it was free and works for both the Ipad and Iphone. Another GPS add on was also mentioned.

Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail:  EAA Chapter 31, 86277   Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR   97478 Thanks to several people for renewing at the meeting.

Dave Eason gave a presentation and diagram for the memorial area. He noted that Bricks will be available for purchase with you or a loved one’s name on them in 3 lines of text for $50 for the 4×8 and $100 for the 8×8 size. You can also add art to the brick for $6. He gave his rough budget estimates, which are quite doable for the group. He is hoping to get some help from Louis Lyons with equipment. He broke his plan down into phases, with phase 1 consisting of getting the paved walkway and landscaping done, along with moving the rock by the clubhouse, phase 2 the building of a memorial wall at the culvert and phase 3 the design for the propeller mounting on the wall.

Although the normal procedure is for the executive committee to meet and vote on a plan, with the lack of a quorum, a vote was taken at the meeting on whether to proceed or not. It was unanimous agreed that we should proceed on this plan, with some design changes to occur as they become apparent.

President Bill has a slightly different design plan, and both plans will be discussed and then decided on at the next meeting. Either will do well, as long as they get done soon!

Then Sid Voorhees then rose to discuss the AWOS system that Creswell is trying to get. It appears that they are about $15,000 short of the needed funds as of yet. He will be sending a letter asking for donations from the local community. He also noted that Creswell has a Part 131 operator on the field now.

There being no other business, we moved into our series of “Homebuilders Corner”. Gary Ludeke presented a 90 deg. angle drill jig he made, using plans found in Sport Aviation. It uses a ruler from Oregon Rule Company, and a roto-zip tool.

Allen Weider got up and brought a sanding block he build using 1×2 MDF with spray adhesive and 2 different grits. He also showed us a chip chaser made with J channel and a hole locator he made out of a used hacksaw blade and pop rivets.

Secretary Stout then asked the group to bring in any bore scopes that they have for the next meeting. These will be evaluated, compared and their capabilities explored.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:29 pm

Business meeting called to order at 7:08 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 14 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Walt Weischedel noted that he hung his engine on his RV-12 the last day of the year, and has nearly completed the gear fix from Van’s. Jim Deal has flown off his 40 hours on his RV-9A and both Bruce Curtis and Pat Dodson have begun building Hummelbirds from plans.

President Bill commented on the memorial area. He has spoken to Shelly and she and a group from the city will be working on it and get the plan ready for ground work this spring. President Bill then gave out the awards for chapter service for 2012.

Hal Skinner noted that he is still not getting emails. It was suggested that he check his spam folder, and Ben Hallert will investigate to make sure his name is in correctly.

The next OACAC meeting will be the 19th at Independence Airport. The next breakfast is also on January19th, so have breakfast with us then shoot up to Independence for lunch and the meeting . See if you can attend both!!

Walt Weischedel got up and showed the group several tools that he has manufactured over the years to help with building his projects. He gave several tips on how to help start bolts, attach washers, drill straight holes using a CD etc. Thanks Walt!

After Walt, Dave Eason got up and showed us a Radio headset holder that he made out of scrap plastic that he found. He asked everyone to coordinate with him any ideas that they have for future HC talks, and to please bring in your special tool, project or tip next month.
