Meeting Minutes from the 3/7/2012 Meeting

The meeting started at 6:00 with Melinda’s famous chili, BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, chips and a drink for only $5 !! After a nice bull session:

Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. The 22 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Larry Lowenkron, Rick Friburg, John Alexander and Bill McWorter (who spoke about a flywheel failure on his Sonex). Welcome to all!!

Gary Ludeke talked about his flights in a Euro Fox (aka Aerotech A220) and the short field characteristics of the airplane.

A request was made at the meeting by Roger Welch’s daughter to have Chapter 31 members donate charity flights for the upcoming Creswell School auction. A discussion then ensued as to what the new FAR’s say about these flights. At the end of the discussion, it was agreed that we need a confirmed opinion from the GADO, but that most local sightseeing flights would be OK to auction off. Roger will contact the GADO to confirm this. She also asked if anyone would be interested in donating some time to host a field trip to the airport, and several members said that they would be happy to. She will contact President Bill when she has a schedule for these trips.

Secretary Stout noted that yearly dues of $25 are due now. Please see him after the meeting or you can send them in by mail:  EAA Chapter 31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR  97478

Guest and Creswell Airport Commission member Larry Lowenkron then spoke about the Urban Moore skydiver issue that is before the city council. Shelly will be here at the next meeting to answer questions as permitted by the city in her capacity as airport manger. He also asked again if anyone would be interested in an airplane parts swap meet. Several people raised their hands, so he is going to do more planning and get back to us with details.

Guest Rick Friberg then asked if we would include a link on our web site for those members who would like to join his just formed “Creswell Airport Association” Check it out if you want to help. Dave Petersen said he would  add this link.

President Bill commented on the 2 projects we will be tackling this year (besides the memorial area) and they are 1) Pressure Wash the building and 2) replace the Chapter 31 sign on the building. He has not accomplished anything further on the memorial garden plans, but will continue to work on it.

Rusty Bartel has contacted his son (who helped last time on the sign) and they are still trying to get the old logo file so they can set up to build the new sign. Dave Petersen thinks he may have one, and will forward it to Rusty right away. Rusty also suggested that the group paint “EAA #31” on the roof of the clubhouse as identification for pilots who fly over.

The next breakfast is on St.Patricks day, March 17th.  Also the next YE event is set for September 8th.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm

The meeting started at 6:00 with our normal BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, and with a large helping of Melinda’s famous chili!

The 19 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Guests included Dee Dewey (Bills wife of 48 years- it was their anniversary)

The most exciting thing that happened to a member was when a tree fell on Tom Cunninghams house during the recent wind storm, while Tom was in the shower. Ask him about it next time you see him. Also, Gary Ludeke talked about his “Pro-Seal” problems in his RV-6 and Charlie Walker talked about his RV-9.

Bruce Curtis reported that he has completed (along with his partners) their Citabria and it was flown for the first time by Bob Severns. Speaking of Bob, he was given his Tech Counselor certificate and pin for service in 2011- Thanks Bob!

Rusty has contacted his son who helped last time on the sign and we are trying to get the old logo file so they can set up to build the new sign.

The memorial park has progressed. A steel building manufacturer has been contacted and will be asked to help with plans that could be accepted by the Creswell Airport Commission. Past President Dave Petersen asked the group to consider not erecting any structure until a later time and focus on getting the memorial garden and bridge competed . This seemed to strike a cord with President Bill, so it looks like he will be focusing on this aspect of the project.

He also noted that the Boy Scouts are considering an aviation Merit Badge that the chapter could help with. He will let us know how this progresses.

Dave Petersen has done one more breakfast (on 1/21/2012) and has decided that the prices does not need to be raised. From now on both breakfasts and dinners will be $5!

December meeting Minutes and an invitation

The meeting was held as normal with dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs and Chili along with some wonderful apple cake from Melinda and attended by 10 members. The introduction part of the meeting was started with a short story from Tom Cunninghams’ daughter about the Notre Dame bell ringer and was really funny. Other introductions were of the normal sort and we found that Brent Henning had bagged a black bear very near his home south of Cottage Grove. The bear had been eating lots of apples and the description of handling the bear meat and the effect of an apple diet was great. Gary Ludeke advised that John Stahr had invited any interested Chapter 31 member to attend their Christmas party at 6pm Saturday Dec. 17. RSVP will be needed to plan for the food. Also they will supply the main dish of chicken, pork or shrimp with casual attire and potluck dishes > People with A – L last names should bring a dessert or appetizer and M- Z a salad, pasta dish or Veggie. There will also be a white elephant exchange with max value of $15. To confirm with John, our members need to contact John by E Mail ( jstahr@stahrdesign.com )

Old business covered was that I will contact Kaiser Metal Buildings regarding the construction of the pole building for our proposed memorial garden – John Rowell the architect advised that their engineered building would be the only thing that might be a hang up for the building inspectors at Creswell. Before spring I will plan to get the design finalized and work with Shelly to get it presented to the city for their approval. With any luck we will be able to build it this late spring and summer . New business included a discussion about using the Young Eagle program to aid with the Boy Scout Aviation Merit badge program. When I was in Colorado, my grandson invited me to his boy scout troop meeting – it was a lot of fun and really impressive to see the group of scouts and find that they had 9 Eagle scouts in their troop. Last Year their troop sponsored a Aviation merit badge trip to Calif. to a glider school and the scouts accomplished the requirements for the award. Obviously their troop wants to continue offering assistance to their members wanting a aviation merit badge & I just read that EAA has signed a letter of intent to work with the national Boy Scout officials to improve the EAA assistance with this program. On our way back from Colorado, Dee and I stopped at Hood River and I discussed the EAA / BSA possibilities with Donna at their volunteer program and found that they would be very interested in a big deal scout camp out / merit badge program at their facilities and will in the near future visit with the scout office here in Eugene to see what they think. Rusty advised that the Creswell scouts troop was also very active and would be good to include in our program. Obviously if this comes together the Hood River chapter will need some help and if we get a big response from the scouts, it could result in a big deal camp out at the WAAM facilities.

Another interesting part of our meeting with a short talk from Tom Preuss regarding Replica Fighters , kits now available, engines for these scaled down WW! – 20′ 30′ and WWII flying machines. It was interesting to see and hear about some of the really great workmanship these builders are now flying.

With no Christmas party or mid month Saturday breakfast, our next meeting will be Wednesday January 4, 2012.

Best for a very Merry Christmas and a great 2012. Bill

Minutes from 11/3/2011 Meeting

Meeting Notes November 3rd, 2011

The meeting started at 6:00 with our normal BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, and with a large helping of  Melinda’s famous chili!

Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by Sec./Tres. Randy Stout.  The 17 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. President Bill Dewey will be gone until the next breakfast. Ray Morse’s grandson was a guest.

Tom Cunningham has a Rans S-12 wing and tail and 3-4 struts for sale. Contact him at       541-895-2745  tcunny@aol.com.

John Kuehl has ½ of a 172 and also a whole Porsche for sale. Contact him at 541-689-0847 or at John.kuehl@continet.com

Dave Petersen then gave a report about the Sept. 10th YE event. We flew 31 kids and everyone had a wonderful time. His only problem was that he overbought supplies and food. That will remedy itself over the next months, but he is concerned that our breakfasts and dinners are costing more than we charge for them. We will regroup on January to decide if we need to charge more for these meals, or change the menu in order to match the costs. He is going to do a breakdown on portions so that he can speak more accurately about any changes and their effects on our costs.

Secretary Stout then brought up the Christmas party. As no one has stepped forward to lead the efforts this year, it is apparent that we will not be having a Christmas party unless President Bill Dewey (who is out of town) decides otherwise. If no party, then the regular meeting will be held on December 7th at the clubhouse. Please check your email to see if this changes over the next few days or weeks.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:54 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout

Minutes from 9/7/2011 meeting

Meeting Notes September 7th, 2011

The meeting started at 6:00 with our normal BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, and sadly without Melinda’s famous chili!
Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by President Bill Dewey with Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present.  The 13 members and guests in attendance then introduced themselves and gave a brief “What exciting thing happened this last month”. Among the guests were John Parsons, who was invited by Bruce Curtis.

There then began a lively discussion on the proper way to sharpen drill bits for plexiglas and Lexan drilling. Suffice to say, at the next meeting Walt W. and Doug K. will bring in some tools and bits and Dave Eason and Brent Henning will bring in some plexiglas and Lexan and then we shall know for sure This should be entertaining!
President Bill gave a quick Memorial Area plans report. He and Roger Welch are still working on developing the plan for the area and present it to the Creswell City Council. They will report back next month.
A reminder by Dave Petersen about the Sept. 10th YE event. That is this upcoming Saturday, so keep it on your calendar. Dave now has all the pilots and aircraft he needs. Registration (and breakfast) will start at 9:00 with flying from 10:00 to 2:00 (or until everyone gets a ride, whichever comes first)  Contact him at EAA31@MSN.com if you can help. Also breakfast will be held this Saturday instead of the 3rd Saturday and Bill Dewey will talk to Shelly about mowing for more parking.
Bill Dewey noted that he has 2 upcoming presentations at the next meetings: Precision Airmotive in Marysville and Lightning LSA  will be presenting in the near future.

That concluded the business portion of the meeting.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:13 pm
