January 7th, 2009 Meeting
The meeting started with a special Spaghetti-Garlic bread and salad dinner (instead of our great hamburger/hotdog/ Chili Bar-B-Q) at 6:00. Ben Hallert, our new President, did himself proud!! It was delicious!
Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM by President Ben Hallert, V.P. Bill Dewey and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout also present. 26 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves. Among the guests were Wayne and Del Ray Bowers (who became a member at the meeting), Welcome to all!
Daniel Cathy asked the club to make a decision on whether or not we would put on the breakfast and lunch at the July 18th Oregon Aviation Historical Society in conjunction with the Bohemia Mining Days group at the Cottage Grove airport. After a brief discussion, several people volunteered and so agreed to run this event. In that vein, Bruce Curtis asked if we could organize the breakfasts a little better, with a list of volunteers and substitutes so that we knew who would be cooking and cleaning each month. He also mentioned that he had a good sum of money that the breakfasts had made during the previous year, and was asked to have Brent Burgess sell all the T-shirts and sweatshirts to the club for resale.

Getting started
Ken Schmidt had volunteered for a field trip to his workshop after the January breakfast, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, he said that he would have his tour later in the year. New member Wayne Bowers was asked if we could tour his shop, and he agreed. He is building an RV-12 and several people expressed interest in seeing his progress. Sounds like a good time!!
A suggestion had been made to improve the clubhouse by replacing the toilets. Our water manager and neighbor, Dave Heisley said that they have not been a problem recently with running over, so he suggested that we don’t replace them at this time. He also noted that he would be turning off the water (as usual) in February in order to keep his control of the water service. Thanks again Dave for another year of free water!!
Ben Hallert said that he will contact Scott Henderson again about renting the clubhouse for a weekend glider operation meeting area. If this activity is approved by the airport manager, the club might rent the clubhouse for various days, as long as we are a named insured on his policy.
It was noted that there are now 2 windows in the clubhouse (the only ones not replaced this summer!) that seem to need replacing. Bill Dewey and Rusty Bartel were asked to take this project on and see if they can find some good units. (They did the other ones) Thanks guys!
A discussion ensued about changing the breakfast from the 2nd Saturday to the 3rd. Saturday so that we would not conflict with the Independence group, and that they might find that Creswell is a great place to fly to for breakfast. It was decided to have Ben contact them to be assured that they have not changed to the 3rd. Saturday and if not, we would change for a 6 month trial period.
Three of our older and less active past members have had medical problems recently, and could use a visit. Phil Writer, Dave Kenyon and George Oswald have all had medical setbacks recently, so if you can, give them a call and pay them a visit.
Daniel Cathy suggested we call up Charlotte Writer and ask if she would like the club to come over and get Phil’s airplane cleaned up and made presentable for sale. Several people liked the idea, and so a call will be made to Charlotte to see if we can be of help.
Secretary Stout noted that dues are due again. Please see him at the meeting or mail your $25 to EAA Chapter 31, 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478
A quick auction for 2 nice metal boxes then occurred. The club made $10 and everyone was happy!
The meeting ran a little long, but at the end, it was decided that, for entertainment and education, we would have a different project brought in each month for a hands on demo of some building or repair technique. The schedule is as follows:
* February- Bill Dewey- Carb Overhaul procedures
* March- Rusty Bartel- Plastic panel repair
* April- Bob Severns- Engine overhaul procedures.
George Coulter then volunteered to help get the web site up and running a bit better. Georges email address is (redacted)
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:55PM

November 2008 minutes
November 4th, 2008 Meeting
The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/ Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.
Meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Dave Peterson with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 16 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves. Among the guests were Wayne and Del Ray Bowers, Jack Coberly and Shawn Kelly and his wife. Welcome to all!
Dave Petersen reported that our monthly breakfast will be on November 8th, and that the December breakfast will not be held. Instead, we will have a work party to get the hangar ready for the Christmas party to be held on December 6th. The December meeting will be held on December 3rd as usual. Dave has invited everyone to come over to his workshop after the breakfast in November. Ken Schmidt was volunteered for a field trip to his workshop after the January breakfast. Sounds like a good time!!
Daniel Cathy reported that the Oregon Aviation Historical Society was contacted by the Bohemia Mining Days group about participating in the festival. They would like airplanes and was us to put on a breakfast and lunch on July 18th. This was opened for discussion with no definitive answer forthcoming.
Scott Henderson has contacted the group about renting the clubhouse for weekend glider operation meeting area. If this activity is approved by the airport manager, the club might rent the clubhouse for various days, as long as we are a named insured on his policy.
Nominations for next years VP and Sec/Treasurer were opened. Bill Dewey was nominated for Vice President, along with Randy Stout for another sentence (oops, I mean term) as Secretary/Treasurer. There being no other nominations, a vote was held and by unanimous consent, each was elected to their positions. Welcome to the leadership Bill!!
Jack Coberly addressed the group about their help working on a Glastar with some at-risk kids. He is a teacher and has been given this Glastar to work on with the kids during the week in the afternoons. The owner will retain title, but all the work is to be done by his group and volunteers. Shawn Kelly has agreed to do the IA stuff. If you are interested, please contact Jack at pilotjack@gmail.com
Shawn Kelly from Kelly Experimental Air in Cottage Grove then came forward and gave a great demo on how to use expanding foam to build a plug for a engine cowl (among other items) He demonstrated how easy it is to use, and the advantage to using it vs. using foam blocks and cutting and sanding them. The product is a Vinyl Ester Styrene called X-30 and costs about $38/ Qt.
A suggestion was made by Walt Weischedel to replace the toilets in the clubhouse. They do tend to stick and when they do, it costs our very nice water supplier money to have his pump run.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45PM
Respectfully submitted,

October 1st, 2008 Meeting
The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/ Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.
Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President Dave Peterson with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 18 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves.
Dave Petersen reported on our recent Fly-In and YE flying event. He said that we had 33 kids take YE rides, 7 planes (and presumably 7 pilots), sold 150 breakfasts and netted the club $100 in profit. We need to work on balancing the number of kids and number of planes for the future, but everyone had a great time. He said that he is still going to contact the Independence (292) crowd to see if we can arrange for them to fly down to our monthly breakfast. It will be on October 11th this month.
A big “Thank You” was expressed by Dave, Ben and Randy to Shelly Humble, our airport manager, and Exxon for their help and with gas for this event.
Tech Counselor Ken Schmidt said he had no report.
Daniel Cathy noted that the Christavia (not an LSA) he is flying and showing for a friend from Roseburg is still available for sale. He also noted that (Roland Letsoms) northern most hangar is now not for sale at Walker field. He did mention that several hangars at Walker are for rent.
Nominations for next years VP and Sec/Treasurer were opened. There being none, a search committee consisting of the past and present officers will contact members to see if anyone is willing to give their time to the club in this manner.
Long time member Stan Auferoth passed away recently and his son, Steve, has asked us to note that his hangar at Creswell and tools are for sale. You can contact Steve at 682-5610 or 554-9499 Tom Preuss also noted that founding member Glen Commons has had triple by-pass surgery, but appears to be making a good recovery. Best wishes from all of us, Glen!!
Richard Jeffryes sent in this note:” I can’t make the meeting, but for those who have not heard, I’m selling my flying Champ so that I can focus on my project. Email me for details if interested. It is a LSA, and it will just be coming out of annual. $28k obo.” richard.jeffryes@centurytel.net
Daniel Cathy rose to mention that he is using the Stewart System (formerly AFI?) of recovering fabric on his Volmer. He really likes its usability and smell. He also has spoken with IVO for a new prop. He was surprised that they do not make props for Lycomings.
Bob Severn mentioned that he has been working on a C-85-12 and has found a good source of parts.
President Dave then spoke about his project, a CH-601 that he is finally getting back too after his “annulus horribilus”. He has invited everyone to come over to his workshop after the breakfast in
November. Ken Schmidt was volunteered for a field trip to his workshop after the January breakfast. Sounds like a good time!!
Secretary Stout discussed an article in the recent Sport Aviation regarding engine out actions on takeoff. He was impressed that they suggested in the strongest language that you violently shove the stick forward to the point of zero or negative g’s when an engine out occurs on takeoff. This is quite important on some strips, as you have little room for landing, especially at too slow an airspeed.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:36PM

September 2008 Minutes
September 3rd ,2008 Meeting
The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/ Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.
Meeting called to order at 7:07 PM by President Dave Petersen with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 18 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves. Steve Hardt, a guest and F-35 Bonanza driver was welcomed by all.
Dave Petersen said that he is still going to contact the Independence (292) crowd to see if we can arrange for them to fly down to our monthly breakfast. It will be on September 6th, the same day as our Creswell YE event. ( Normally it is on the 2nd Saturday)
Ben Hallert reported on the FAA’s public hearing about “through the fence” access to airports, such as Creswell. They instructed the Creswell Airport to charge 115% of equitable on airport user fees, which seems to be about $35 per month for this access. They also do not want any more homeowners to have access to the airport. Also, they do not want this access to be transferable to any new owners of the property. They feel that it is an incompatible land use- i.e. a homeowner will eventually begin to complain about the airport. Not sure all in attendance agreed with this view.
September 6th, 2008 has been chosen for the next EAA Chapter 31 Creswell Air Fair. Keep this date on your calendars! We have applied and been granted insurance for this event, according to President Dave Petersen. The Creswell Chronicle had a nice article about this upcoming event.
All pilots who will be flying YE’s should attempt to be here by 8:30 for a safety meeting.
John Kuehl then rose to give a vivid description of his flight in his recently completed Falconer F-11. He was on his first real flight from Creswell and had a high oil temp problem. Rather than continue to Daniels for practice, he returned to Creswell to check it out. He did not set up correctly as he was distracted by an aircraft he allowed to land first. He had some difficulty on landing and ended up ground looping and significantly damaging the aircraft. No one was hurt, in part because of his 4-point harness system that he installed.
Tech Counselor Ken Schmidt then noted that he has several “Amateur Built Certification Kits” available to any interested parties. Cost is $19.99
Daniel Cathy noted that he is flying a Christavia (not an LSA) for a friend from Roseburg with the intent to show it for potential sale. He will have it at the YE fly-in this weekend. He also noted that (Roland Letsoms) northern most hangar is for sale at Walker field. He also noted that the WAAAM in Hood River was having a fly-in this weekend.
Dave Eason asked if anyone had any aluminum that he can use to make a jig for hole cutting.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:26PM and discussions ensued on final preparations for the YE fly in this weekend.

August 6th ,2008 Meeting
The meeting started with our great hamburger/hotdog/ (Alas still too hot for)Chili Bar-B-Q party at 6:00.
Meeting called to order at 7:01 PM by President Dave Petersen with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 16 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves.
It was noted that the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly will be held on the 9th of August. (Which is the 2nd Saturday, as they all are) Bob Severn suggested that the Independence (292) crowd would join us more often if we didn’t have the breakfast on their meeting day. Some discussion followed, with no firm decision made.
Nametags for all who don’t have one are now available. Please see Dave, Randy or Brent at the next meeting if you still haven’t received yours. Several people received their new nametags at the meeting.
It was reported that there is the possibility that the Boeing 40 will be at Cottage Grove on September 17th on its return trip from Oshkosh. We will discuss this at the upcoming meeting in September.
Ben Hallert reported on the FAA’s 19th public hearing about “through the fence” access to airports, such as Creswell. They do not approve of this and will be setting fees for any who have this access.
Daniel Cathy gave a nice report about the Oregon Air Tour, sponsored by the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club which started on July 19th by flying from Cottage Grove to Klamath Falls, then the 21st to Homedale ID and Nampa, the 22nd to Joseph, OR, the 23rd to Hermiston, the 24th to Hood River and the 25th to McMinnville. It was quite smokey in the southern part of the tour, but quite fun (as they all are). Check it out in 2 years if you are interested in this fun fly out.
Just a reminder, we have a combo lock on the gate to the EAA driveway. The combo is the intercom frequency without the .05. Got it??
September 6th, 2008 has been chosen for the next EAA Chapter 31 Creswell Air Fair. Keep this date on your calendars! Ben Hallert called for a show of hands for pilots willing to fly the YE’s. We have applied and been granted insurance for this event, according to President Dave Peterson.
Chapter 1457 along with the LCC Aviation Academy is having their 3rd annual Norwest Fly-Fest on August 23rd at the Eugene Airport.
On August 8th at the Oregon Aviation Historical Society in CG, Phil Boyer and Ray Costello were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Dave Heisley asked for the South Lane Modelers, to have their meeting date changed from Friday to the 3rd. Wednesday of the month. No objections were noted. I received a call after the meeting asking if they could make it a Monday. I said that wouldn’t be a problem. If anyone can think of a reason that this would conflict with some other event, let me know and I will contact them. Otherwise, they will meet on the 3rd Monday from now on.
Tech Counselor Ken Schmidt then gave a brief talk about tire maintenance procedures. Thanks Ken!
A quick note on the new “Spot Tracker” system of personal locater beacons. They are quite inexpensive, but cost about $150 per year to subscribe. A good investment for some. It was also noted that Darrin Humble is no longer in the main hangar performing maintenance. He is still available, however, on a on site basis.
The entertainment for this meeting consisted of an interesting DVD that Rusty Bartell brought in that he acquired during his work at United Technologies- The rocket motor building people. A bit dated, but a neat look at early rocketry. Thanks Rusty!
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:26PM

Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM by President Dave Petersen with V.P. Ben Hallert and Sec./Tres. Randy Stout present. 22 members and guests were in attendance and introduced themselves. Among the guests were Tom Harmon and Larry Church (a guest of Dave Heisley)
Welcome to all!! BTW, Larry bought one of the Independence 7/8s scale Nieuport 10’s that they built a few years back. There are only 3 left at Independence now. He says it has the VW 1835CC engine, which has been problematic.
It was noted that the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly will be held on the 12th of July. (Which is the 2nd Saturday, as they all are)
Nametags for all who don’t have one are now available. Please see Dave, Randy or Brent at the next meeting if you still haven’t received yours. Several people received their new nametags at the meeting.

(7 hrs so far!!) As far as new aircraft ready for flight or flying (yes we do much more than talk!!), John Kuehl has his Falconer F-11 ready to go (it is a Canadian copy of the French Jodell). Now he has to do
the same with his flying skills.

Nametags for all who don’t have one are now available. Please see Dave, Randy or Brent at the next meeting if you still haven’t received yours. Several people received their new nametags at the meeting.
Daniel Cathy reminded everyone about the Oregon Air Tour, sponsored by the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club which will start on July 19th by flying from Cottage Grove to Klamath Falls, then the 21st to Homedale ID and Nampa, the 22nd to Joseph, OR, the 23rd to Hermiston, the 24th to Hood River and the 25th to McMinnville. He also noted that the Oregon Aviation Historical Society will be having a big band dance on July 5th from 7:00PM to 11:00 PM. Sounds like fun for everyone.
Dave Heisley, our very good neighbor and EAA member was quite upset about the garbage from the last breakfast. He had mentioned earlier to Ben Hallert (who was not at the breakfast when the problem occurred) that he needed to have the egg shells and pancake batter separated from the burnable trash. Unfortunately, this is exactly the opposite of what happened, which was very frustrating to Dave. We will take our trash in to the landfill from now on, and thanks to Dave for doing this thankless job for so long. He is also having great difficulty with his hips again, so if you see Dave, give him a good word.
Rusty Bartel mentioned that you can still get alcohol free auto gas at the Jerry Brown Co in Eugene, the Jasper Store in beautiful downtown Jasper and Matthews Market in Cedar Flats. Be careful otherwise if you have an STC for car gas!
September 6th, 2008 has been chosen for the next EAA Chapter 31 Creswell Air Fair. Keep this date on your calendars! Also, Chapter 1457 along with the LCC Aviation Academy is having their 3rd annual Norwest Fly-Fest on August 23rd at the Eugene Airport.
The Rogue Valley Air Fair is slated for June 7th and 8th. Check the calendar when you get a chance.
The entertainment for this meeting consisted of Ben Hallerts very interesting description of his just completed trip to Egypt. I don’t know how one guy can get into so much trouble so quickly, but at least he came back without an AK-47 slug in his rear. Next meeting we will have the DVD on the Boeing 40 restoration and first flight.

Guests included Eric Sampero (finishing up at LCC, was a Jet engineer in the AF), Jack McCoy (who hasn’t flown since 1986 and want to get back into it) and Sarah Woods (who would love a ride). Welcome to all!!
Ex-President Bruce Curtis reminded everyone about the regular breakfast that Chapter 31 holds monthly, and the date this month will be 5/10/08.
Walt Weischedel mentioned that his hangar in Creswell is for rent ($150/Mo) Call him if you are interested at 747-4808.
Member Mat Northway now has 2 Fairchild 24’s, with the acquisition of a parts plane. Anyone need a few extra parts? Hopefully he won’t for a while.
The Secretary/Treasurer then reminded the group that dues for 2008 are now due. Please send your checks to 86277 Panorama Rd., Springfield, OR 97478 payable to EAA Chapter 31, or just see Randy at the meeting. He noted that he has a list of paid members up front, and anyone who isn’t sure should check the list for their name. Thanks to everyone who has already renewed their membership!
The Secretary has looked into the possibility of the chapter becoming a 501-c-3 charitable organization. The biggest problem is with the club’s charter not being in line with required IRS guidelines. He has been advised that it would require a complete dissolution of the existing club and then a restructured start to meet these requirements. He will report again at a later meeting.
Nametags for all who don’t have one are now available. Please see Dave, Randy or Brent at the next meeting if you still haven’t received yours. Several people received their new nametags at the meeting.
John Kuelh noted that the Oregon Air and Space Museum in Eugene will be having a big band dance on May 18th from 2-4:00PM. Sounds like fun for the old (and some new) timers.
It was noted that the EAA’s B-17, Aluminum Overcast, flys to Oregon this summer. They will be at Medford on the13th and 14th of May and Hillsboro on the 16th-18th. Catch it if you can!
Daniel Cathy advised everyone about the Oregon Air Tour, which is put on every 2 years by the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club. They will start on July 19th by flying from Cottage Grove to Klamath Falls, then the 21st to Homedale ID and Nampa, the 22nd to Joseph, OR, the 23rd to Hermiston, the 24th to Hood River and the 25th to McMinnville. Sound like a great tour with many activities at each stop.
Dave Easley mentioned that during the McMinnville stop you should visit the Spruce Goose. He was told (while he was a docent at the Museum) that the tail nearly came off during the first (and only) flight. Make you wonder!!??
Rusty Bartel mentioned that you can still get alcohol free auto gas at the Jerry Brown Co in Eugene, the Jasper Store in beautiful downtown Jasper and Matthews Market in Cedar Flats. Be careful otherwise if you have an STC for car gas!
If you go online, check our EAA.ORG for their new electronic calendar of events. Also, Bruce Curtis has been paid for our hostgo.com domain for our website. Thanks Bruce.
Rusty Bartell and Bill Dewey have completed the replacement of the broken windows and sliding door in the clubhouse. The total cost was only $730, due to their hard work in finding a great deal and doing the work themselves (The EAA Way!!) Look around and see for yourself. It is a wonderful change. Thanks guys!
September 6th, 2008 has been chosen for the next EAA Chapter 31 Creswell Air Fair. Keep this date on your calendars!
President Dave was disappointed that Precision Airmotive was unable to speak about fuel injections systems at our April meeting. Hopefully they will re-schedule for later this summer.
The Rogue Valley Air Fair is slated for June 7th and 8th. Check the calendar when you get a chance.
The President opened the floor to see who was going to OSH. After a show of hands, he asked everyone to share their personal best stories from past trips. It was very entertaining! We then watched a nice DVD from EAA national about Oshkosh. Makes you want to be there this
summer!
