Meeting Minutes from the 11/7/2018 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, November 7th, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with a great homemade Chili with corn bread, cupcakes and cookies courtesy of John and Ruth Kuehl. Thanks for a hearty and wonderful meal!!

The meeting started at 6:58PM with the pledge of allegiance lead by President John Kuehl. Vice President Gary Ludeke and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout were also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 24 members and guests in attendance.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, November 17th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Thanks in advance for all the guys who show up and cook the meal!

Secretary Stout noted that the check book balance is $3859.08 as of 11/01/2018

VP Gary then spoke about the new flying “club” that several members are putting together. Those members will probably include himself, Jerry Krause, Roger Welch, Bill Dewey, President John and David Dick. They will be purchasing a Zodiac 601 and they intend Gary to be the flight instructor, Bill to be the A+P and David to manage the group. They may just run it as a 4 share partnership, so “club” might be an overstatement at this time.

President John then called for volunteers for meeting presentations for the upcoming year. Several people raised their hands and we have most of the meeting dates covered. Please contact John with any meeting ideas you may have and we can add them to the calendar.

He then spoke about the upcoming Christmas Party to be held at the clubhouse on our normal meeting night in December (12/5/18). He will provide the roast beef and a few fixings. Those coming should bring a dish: A-H a Side dish, I-Q a Salad and R-Z a Dessert. Please feel free to choose any category you most prefer. Cost is $10/ meal, or $15 for the first person (if you are couple) if no side dish. Social Hour at 6:00, Dinner at 6:30 to 7:00. We would love to have a gift exchange also, so if possible, bring a $10 or less wrapped gift. All who bring gifts will get a ticket and the fun will commence!! V.P. Gary then spoke about his efforts (and others) to begin the restoration of the Story Special aircraft down at the OAHS in Cottage Grove. He is having help from Mark Zalinski on the wings and encourages anyone interested in helping to join them in CG. Call Gary at 541-914-8605 for times and days. He also mentioned that past resident and now Head of WAAM restoration shop, Jacona Matson-Bell and Mark Baxter will be working on the final restoration to flying status of the Tex Rankin Great Lakes along with Tim Talen helping to restore the Wimpy and a Model A powered Pietenpole.

There being no further business, President John introduced our speakers for the night; Todd Hamilton, Mike Anderson and Janelle Saylor from South Lane School District and Creswell High School. Todd, Mike and Janelle talked about their efforts to involve the kids in aviation as a viable career path through either pilot school, A/P School or Drone training. He hoped they could work with our group on several projects that they could offer the kids, and perhaps have some of our members either teach or speak to these kids at various times. It is a great partnership with our Young Eagle program to interest kids in aviation and keep them excited to take the next steps to a very rewarding career. Thanks to them all!!

Meeting Minutes for the 10/3/2018 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 3rd, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with Lasagna, French bread, salad, cookies and a drink for only $8! Thanks to Dave Eason and all the guys for helping out. Gary Ludeke offered to “cook” dinner for the November meeting. Thanks Gary!!

The meeting started at 6:40 with a brief report on activities at the Creswell Airport by our own airport manager, Shelly Humble. Many projects are in the works, specifically taxiway paving and a new PAPI landing system that is being certified for a GPS approach. President John had talked to Shelly about paving the section of taxiway that is near our north door so that airplanes could make a loop for loading/unloading YE’s. She said that this might happen, but not before 2023 or so. Thanks Shelly!

The pledge of allegiance as then lead by President John Kuehl at 6:58 PM. Vice President Gary Ludeke and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout were also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 21 members and guests in attendance.

Secretary Stout noted that the check book balance is $3776.73 as of 9/29/2018

President John said that he will also talk to Dorothy Schick about running a “Flying Start” program out of the hangar. He held up a brochure that EAA national has given for this purpose.

VP Gary then spoke about the new flying club that several members are putting together. Those members include himself, Jerry Krause, Roger Welch, Bill Dewey, President John and David Dick. Gary then held up a copy of the RV-3 project book. It shows the project progress and the last page is signed by all the “guilty” parties. If you helped on the project but have not signed the book, please see Gary.

He then read a quick story about the first bombing of a commercial passenger plane in the US, which occurred on 11/1/1955 on UA flight 629 from Denver to Portland. The killer, Jack Gilbert Graham, was intent on killing his mother, Daisy E. King, and collecting on insurance policies. He had placed a bomb in her suitcase with the intention that it go off over the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately the plane was delayed, but took off in time to just be airborne when the bomb exploded. All aboard were killed, but with minimal detective work, the trail of insurance policies lead directly to Mr. Graham. In very quick order, he was tried, convicted and sent to the Gas Chamber in January 1957. Thanks Gary for a very interesting look at aviation in the past that still directs us now.

There being no further old or new business, President John fired up the Big Screen and presented several interesting video’s, among which were “Homebuilt Aircraft Project Progress”, “Why LSA aircraft have so many crashes”, “How to pick the best engine” and “Homebuilders Help- Fold down panel”. The then put the EAA Chapter Video on the screen and we enjoyed another great presentation especially the part about Odyssey SLIC cable installations.

Minutes from the 9/5/2018 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, September 5th, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with Hot Dogs and Hamburgers, salad, huge amounts of apple pie and a drink for only $8! Thanks to Charlie Walker and Tom Cunningham and all the guys for helping out.

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance lead by President John Kuehl at 7:01 PM. (Vice President Gary Ludeke was off on his 50th wedding anniversary trip and therefore absent) Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout was also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was then called to order. There were 23 members and guests in attendance. Among the Guests was Noah Forest, who owns Brooks Auto Doctor and is interested in starting an aircraft project. Also our newest member’s family, the Messers (Shaomei and the 3 kids) were here in force. Welcome to all!!

The President then had all the members and guests in attendance quickly introduce themselves and give a short comment related to their aviation activities.
President John then gave out fuel vouchers for all the YE pilots who flew kids this year. If you didn’t get yours yet, please contact John ASAP. They are good until November 18th.

Doug Kindred then spoke about the RV-3 dedication at the OAHM museum in Cottage Grove the weekend before. It was well attended and Richard VanGrunsven spoke at length about his history and that of the RV-3. He thanked everyone who was able to attend. The OAHM in CG also hosted the Great Oregon Homebuilt fly-in on that Labor Day weekend.

Secretary Stout then reminded the group about name tags. Everyone in attendance should have their name tag on, just to make sure we get to know each other better. Also, the check book balance is $3359.48

Rod Johnson then rose to present his current project, a cloth aviators helmet that fit around a pair of David Clark headsets. It was well made and a compliment to his skills.

Charlie Walker then suggested we review our YE procedures. His suggestions and others in the group revolved around getting a working PA system to announce to the groups (waiting for their turns) that they were up, and perhaps we could commandeer the Courtesy Car to run kids down to the airplanes that were waiting for riders. More volunteers are what is really needed and then the training to go with them. John will try to make these both happen prior to our next YE flying event. It was also suggested that we could fly YE’s every breakfast.

President John was asked to talk to Shelly Humble, (our airport manager), about paving the section of taxiway that is near our north door so that airplanes could make a loop for loading/unloading YE’s. Darrell Durossette rose to ask if we could have more hands-on seminars or presentations during our meetings. He offered to provide materials and lesson plans to help this along. He also noted that there will be a shortage of both pilots and mechanics in the very near future, so this career path is an excellent choice for those who aren’t sure what they want to do with their lives. Our speaker next month is expected to be Todd Hamilton from the Creswell School District. He will be able to talk about the plans for aviation that they are working on for the students this year.

There being no further business, President John put the EAA Chapter Video on the screen and we enjoyed another great presentation.

Meeting Minutes from the 6/6/2018 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, June 6th, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our host Jim Orglisso providing a great Lasagna with spinach salad, bread and cookies for desert along with drinks for only $8! Thanks Jim!

Gary Ludeke has offered to arrange the August dinner (we will not be meeting in July except on July 4th to fly Young Eagles at the clubhouse at 10:00AM) Gary also offered to take a press release to the Creswell Cornicle for publication. He will also be the squadron leader for the YE pilots and fly-over pilots. John Kuehl will be flight coordinator. Club 1457 offered to fly any YE’s that were unable to fly at our event at their event on the 7th of July.

Vice President Gary then gave a nice video presentations; “Go Around” and “Oregon Air Mail Service”

John then introduced Tim and Cassandra, who gave a nice presentation on the “Beaverton Bandits” and how they agreed to disagree with the CAA regarding aircraft licensing during the 1920’s and 30’s. It seems that the Oregon Aeronautics Division began in 1921 and licensed airplanes (with real license plates). In 1926 the Federal Government began licensing airplanes and by 1938 the CAA was born. They had a wonderful presentation with George Bogardes, Les Long, George Yates, Walt Rupert, Charlie Bernard, Pete Bowers. Tim has an EAA # of 8165 and joined when he was 14 years old. They finished the presentation discussing what the OAHS does and what they expect to do for the 100th anniversary of the Oregon Aviation Dept. in 2021. Thanks to them both for a very good evening of history of Oregon Aviation!

President John then ran the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, with video of a Super Cub on Floats which we all enjoyed.

President John then gave a nice slide presentation that was a distillation of his recent trip to Oshkosh for leadership training. He has come back with a lot of great ideas. The first of which is to paint “EAA 31” on the top of the clubhouse, visible from the air while in the pattern. He also wants us to have a lot better web site and begin posting on Facebook. And, he hopes to promote the flying club that is starting to form around the C-150. Hopefully all these projects can begin and bring us into the modern age of communication. Thanks John!

President John also noted that VP Gary Ludeke was one of the subjects of Lauran Paine Jr.’s column in the (May) issue of Sport Aviation. The subject was Young Eagle flights, and Gary and Randy Stout were both mentioned for the flights they had made with very special YE’s.

John then introduced Mark Shumaker again, who gave a nice presentation on skydiving as a sport and the equipment used. He said a nice parachute rig is about $6500, and includes a computer that would auto deploy an emergency ‘chute if you were unconscious and nearing the ground too quickly. Tandem jumps (your first ones) are $200, and solo jump are $25 up to 10,500ft. AGL He seems like a great neighbor and will be a nice addition to the Creswell Airport. Thanks Mark!

With no other new or old business, Pres. John asked our speaker Jim Origliosso to come up and give a presentation about the Angel Flight program. Jim is the area director for Angel Flight, and has flown upwards of 80 flights himself. They have been around for 34 years and received nearly 40 Million in donations for this worthy volunteer service. No pilots are paid for this work, which makes it even more amazing. They have about 1300 volunteer pilots whose qualifications are Private Certificate with 250 hours, Insurance, 50 Hrs. CC time. There are no emergency trips booked, only medical or special needs trips. Jim showed slides of some of his families he has helped, and it really is heartwarming to see their faces. President John then ran the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, which we all enjoyed. They noted that June 9th is Young Eagle day, so chapters who don’t have a set day should attempt to use that date. Our chapter 31 uses July 4th as our YE day. It also noted that the Chapter Award Applications need to be sent in as soon as possible.

As a final notice, there will be a 100th year celebration of the first air mail flight. Ron England and his Fleet 2 will “fly the mail” on May 16th at the Creswell airport at 3:00. Try to attend if you can.

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our hosts John and Ruth Kuehl providing a great “fix your own hard or soft Taco” meal with all the trimmings and candy and/or Ice Cream for desert along with drinks for only $8! Gary gave a very thorough slide presentation about the various airspaces and their visibility, tower contact and cloud clearance requirements. It was a good refresher for all of us who will be getting their BFR’s in the near future. Thanks Gary!

We then watched a vintage “Andy Griffith Show” episode, where Aunt Bea learns to fly (a 172). Very nostalgic and entertaining.

President John then decided that there was enough time to present the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, which we all enjoyed.

Meeting Minutes from the 2/7/2018 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, February 7th, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our new host Walt Weischedel providing a wonderful Chicken Alfredo dinner with salad, French bread, sweet rolls and drinks for only $5! See you at the next dinner/meeting for Lasagna!! Thanks Walt!!

There were 24 members and guests in attendance. Cassandra from the Oregon Aviation Historical Society and her family were in attendance. Also, lapsed member Paul Buehler re-joined the club.

President Kuehl began the program with a list of upcoming programs and a request for everyone to put on their thinking caps and find us another great speaker. Several people raised their hands and suggested names. John now has most of the 2018 meetings taken care of, but more programs are always welcome.

Treasurer Stout then gave a quick treasurers report. (We have $ 2670.69 in the checkbook as of 2/7/2018). Please see him for a list of members who have not paid and lay $25 on him if your name is on the list. It’s the best $25 you will spend all year!

With no other new or old business, Pres. John acknowledged Gary Ludeke to come forward and give his slide presentation on the display RV-3 that the club has just delivered to the OAHS. Gary noted (and showed) the condition of the parts as they were received (rough would be a kind word), and proceeded to show the work accomplished, both quickly and slowly. All the folks who helped were recognized and a group picture was taken of the guilty parties. The only thing left to do is reward the non-participants and this will be a “mission accomplished”. But in all seriousness, thanks from everyone in Chapter 31 and the OAHS for the hard work and great results. This airplane truly represents Oregon Aviation, EAA, and Dick VanGrunsven as a great example of Dick’s first airplane that started it all. Hopefully I will convince the President to post pictures of the re-build and the group pictures. Thanks everyone!!

Meeting Minutes from the 1/3/2018 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, January 3rd, 2018

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM with our amazing hosts Virgil and Bridget Pratt. We had a wonderful Lasagna with salad, French bread, Brownies and Apple Cake and drinks for only $5? See you at the next dinner/meeting for pulled pork!! Unfortunately, this will be the last meeting that Virgil and Bridget will be hosting, as they plan to retire in March. Thanks so much from everyone for all the wonderful meals you gave us during the past few years. You will be missed!!!

President Kuehl began the program with a quick look back at all the programs that we enjoyed in 2017. He also noted that we flew 113 Young Eagles with 14 airplanes. He then gave out chapter service awards to several people who helped make 2017 a fun year! The MVP award went to the dynamic duo of Virgil and Bridge Pratt. Thanks again for all your wonderful meals!

Gary Ludeke also reported on a conversation he had with the Principle at Creswell High School about starting an aviation program there. Gary indicated his willingness to speak to groups of students, as a few other members will also. He is waiting on them now to confirm that they want this program.

He also gave an RV-3 update. The plane is now complete, and they have delivered it to the OAHS Museum in CG. There will be a formal acceptance ceremony this spring. The project pictures and struggles will be part of next months program in the clubhouse.

Other upcoming programs on the docket include: in March Reiner Decker will give a presentation on Jet engine development that he and his father worked on and Dave Eason will give an airspace review in April. It was agreed that Dr. Hansen would be a great speaker to explain (again) the Basic Med rules and how they are working after the first 8 months.

The matter of elections was then discussed. Gary Ludeke has agreed to be the VP for the next 2 years and help John as he remains President. The slate of officers was then presented to the group, moved to be accepted by Walt Weischedel and voted on. All officers were elected unanimously. Bill Dewey accepted the position of Quartermaster (to keep the pantry stocked for our breakfasts and dinners).

Treasurer Stout then gave a quick treasurers report. (We have $ 2730.69 in the checkbook as of 12/29/2017). He noted that we paid EAA national $570 for dues and insurance, and completed the clubhouse floor painting project (Thank again to the amazing John Kuehl for all this arduous work). The EPUD bill alone for the heat to cure the paint was $240!

With no other new or old business, Pres. John began to show a video on the Basler Aviation conversion of the DC-3 to a turbine powered hauler that takes its payload from 6500 lbs. to 11,000 lbs. and speed up to 240 knots. He also presented the EAA Monthly Chapter Video, which was appreciated by everyone.
