Meeting Minutes from the 6-1-2016 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, June 1st , 2016
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There were Costco Hot Dogs, great hamburgers, lots of Bridget’s famous Chili, brownies, chips and a drink for only $5. Don’t miss her next great meal!!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 7:00 PM sharp. President John Kuehl, VP Bill Johnson and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 21 members and 7 guests in attendance. The guests included (forgive me for the omissions of names, as the intros came fast and furious!) Patrick, a U of O almost Grad with an aviation interest, Dennis and his wife, who own a Citabria and Pacer and are working on building a Bearhawk Patrol, and a mom from Creswell with her 3 (very interested in aviation) kids. Welcome to all!!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, June 18th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Bridget did not mention whether or not she can be here so our volunteers for this breakfast are (hopefully) the same group as last time Tom, Bill, Rod and John, who will coordinate getting the breakfast ready to serve. Thanks in advance guys!

The old business was called for and the first item consisted of a list of members who have not yet paid for 2016, which was given to Doug Kindred to follow up. In addition, the Secretary displayed a nice certificate from the “Rosie The Riveter” group, thanking us for the time we spent with them. Of course, it is we who should be thanking them. This certificate is now posted on the clubhouse wall.

Tom Cunningham brought up the upcoming “Wings and Wheels” show at Cottage Grove on the 25th, and had sign up forms for anyone who is willing to come and display their aircraft (or presumably their car). He left the forms at the front table.

Gary Ludeke took the floor and asked for some volunteers to help finish the RV-3 project in the back of the clubhouse. He and Alan Weider have a list of very do-able projects that need to be completed ASAP. He got several offers of help (Tom Cunningham, John Kuehl), and is hopeful that we can complete the project this summer. Kyle has offered to let them use the paint booth for the final painting.

Frenchie invited the group to consider a trip over to the (newly remodeled) Oregon Air and Space Museum at the Eugene Airport.

President John then told the group that unless we designate a YE coordinator, we will not have any YE flights on the 4th of July. Rod Johnson stepped forward and offered to man this important position. Thanks Rod!!

There being no other business, President John began the Chapter Video from EAA National.

After the video, President John introduced our speaker for the evening, Gary Brown. Gary has been flying for 42 years. He has over 32,000 hours. He flew for Continental Airlines for 25 years and currently spends time as a DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative). He gave a very interesting presentation on his career, and his post career flying, along with some pictures of the big boys having the same kind of problems that us little airplane flyers sometimes have. He was warmly thanked for his time and very entertaining talk. His departure was a real crowd pleaser!!

There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:25 PM
Respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the April 6th, 2016 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, April 6th, 2016
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There were Costco Hot Dogs, great hamburgers, cookies, chips and a drink for only $5. Don’t miss her next great meal!!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:50 PM (John was ahead again!) President John Kuehl, VP Bill Johnson and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 26 members and guests in attendance. President John asked anyone in attendance who wanted an EAA calendar to come up to him after the meeting. He had one left.

Tom Cunningham rose to ask the group if we could please purchase some more griddles for the breakfast. He brought in a coupon from Bi-Mart for a nice griddle at a very good price. He then moved that the group purchase 3 of them, this motion being 2nded by Gary Ludeke and voted on. It passed unanimously.

President John Kuehl then discussed the painting of a compass rose down by the FBO. It appears that this cannot occur unless we enlist a Surveyor to mark out the radials accurately. He will be looking into getting this accomplished but at this time the project is shelved.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, April 16th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Our volunteers for this breakfast are (hopefully) the same group as last time Tom, Bill, Rod and John, who will coordinate getting the breakfast ready to serve. Thanks in advance guys!

President John then presented a nice slide show that documented the great work that many members of the club did to build, paint, stain and shelve our new supply cabinet. The work is top notch and really needed. I hope not to leave anyone out of the “Thanks” but thanks to Bill Dewey, Rod Johnson, John Kuehl and Walt Weischedel. It looks great!!

At the last meeting, Pres. John presented the group with a box full of stickers to be applied to your old Sport Aviation magazines and then distributed throughout the community. These stickers tell the reader to visit Chapter 31 at their next meeting, and speak about all the fun things that occur there. Secretary Stout noted that he “found” one of these magazines at Don’s Barbershop and Bill Dewey raised his hands as the guilty party. Good work guys!!

Walt Weischedel and Alan Weider have replaced the 2nd toilet with a twin to the 1st that was replaced last year. Thanks Walt and Alan!

Gary Ludeke then suggested that if we decide to have a YE event during the 4th of July Creswell Parade, we contact Don Amberg at the Chamber of Commerce and notify them of this decision. It is strongly suggested that everyone get online and check out the YE certification process so that you can participate in this or future YE events. They have made it much easier and less intrusive to fill out the forms.

There being no other business, the meeting was turned over to Curt Cowley from the FAA. He is the FAST Team manager from Hillsboro. He gave a brief history of his flying/fixing career in the military and civilian, with an emphasis on Helicopters. He went on to discussed accidents and their prevention, and then, to most everyone’s surprise, outlined the new FAA enforcement policy. He said that it is now their position that most non-egregious violations would be best handled with education and instruction rather than suspensions and penalties. That includes inadvertent TFR violations and other violations that were not intended. A very interesting guy and a great presentation. Thanks!!

President Kuehl then showed the EAA National Monthly Chapter Video Magazine. As always, this was informative and helpful.

There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 8:15 PM
Respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the 3/2/2016 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, March 2nd, 2016
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There were Pulled Pork sandwiches, salad, Bridget’s homemade brownies and a drink for only $5. Don’t miss her next great meal!!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:50 PM (John was never one to be late!) President John Kuehl, VP Bill Johnson and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout were present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 21 members and guests in attendance. President John asked anyone in attendance who wanted an EAA calendar to come up to him after the meeting and buy one at any “fair” price.

He then asked everyone to introduce themselves and their project (if they have one). Darrell Durosette spoke about his purchase of a Luscombe that he will be flying back from New York this spring!

President John Kuehl started the entertainment portion of the program with a nice picture presentation of his work on his Pro Tek PT-2. He showed how he made the ribs and then built a wing. Later in the meeting he showed the jig he made to make the crimps in the ribs so that it looked professional and was cheap! Thanks John!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, March 19th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Our volunteers for this breakfast are Tom, Bill, Rod and John , who will coordinate getting the breakfast ready to serve. Thanks guys!

President John then spoke about the club needing a quartermaster to keep stock on all the food we use during our dinners and breakfasts. Gary Ludeke volunteered to head up this important position. Thanks! John also asked for volunteers to help him build a storage cabinet for all of our non-perishable supplies. Several people raised their hands, so it looks like this project is off and running.

He then presented the group with a box full of stickers to be applied to your old Sport Aviation magazines and then distributed throughout the community. These stickers tell the reader to visit Chapter 31 at their next meeting, and speak about all the fun things that occur there. A great idea revisited again. Most everyone picked up a sheet or two before they left.

It was noted by someone in the group that Van’s is having a Safety Seminar up in Aurora on March 12th. Suggestions and demonstrations on how to keep flying safely in Experimental aircraft.

Speaking of Vans, the RV-3 project that the chapter is working on has begun to slow to a crawl. Gary Ludeke is hoping to build up support again from the builders in the group. Look for some activity to take place later this month.

Walt Weischedel suggested that we replace the 2nd toilet with a twin to the 1st that was replaced last year. Most everyone agreed, so he will pick one up at Costco and install it. Thanks Walt! Walt also mentioned that Safeway had a great coupon for bacon and $10 off $50 that we could take advantage of when we buy our breakfast supplies.

John noted that we would be hosting Curt Conley from the FAA at our next meeting. Curt is a pilots-pilot and flew a bunch of exotic metal while in the military. He has seen Curt’s presentation, and thinks it would be both fun and informative. He also mentioned that EAA National says we have $380 in Young Eagle script that we can donate to a worthy YE camper. If anyone knows of such an individual, please present their name to John or Randy and we will contact them.

There being no other business, the meeting was then adjourned at 7:50 PM
respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the 2-3-2016 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, February 3rd, 2016
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by John and Ruth Kuehl. There was Lasagna, French bread, a huge salad, Pam Stouts’ homemade oatmeal-raisin cookies and a drink for only $5. Don’t miss the next great meal!!

The meeting as normal started with the pledge of allegiance, and an introduction of the guests in the audience. We hosted Alex Goodwin (mini-cub)

President John Kuehl started the chapter video magazine presentation at 6:55, and we were able to have a look at the new changes to the Child Protection program and how it affects the Young Eagle flights we give. Apparently, the EAA National is attempting to model their efforts after the Boy Scouts and CAP.

We stopped the video there and recognized Past President Gary Ludeke, who has reservations as to the clubs ability to staff our YE event as they are requesting. Alan Weider then mentioned that Jack Pelton has further clarified these rules to eliminate many of the problems that Gary was concerned about for the YE events, not the other activities that could be problematic. Since all the YE flyers are with a parent or guardian during the event, it eliminates many of the rules that require a certain number of vetted members per child (2 adults/10 kids 13 and under, 2 adults/40 kids over 13). After these discussions, we viewed the rest of the chapter video.

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:20 PM by President  John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. There were 24 members and guests in attendance. President John asked anyone in attendance who wanted an EAA calendar to come up to him after the meeting and buy one. He is out the $80 it costs for the calendars, and would like to recoup this cost.

Alan Weider then spoke about the RV-3 project. He had taken the wheel pants home and sanded off all the old paint and bondo. They were in bad shape, but are now ready for paint. He and Dave Eason will break the wings apart for storage and repair. The tail wheel still needs fabrication, and we need to align the cowling. It was suggested that we pop rivet these together, as this is a non-flying display aircraft.

Dave Eason then gave a quick “Shop Tricks” demonstration on how to sort out a box of mixed fasteners. His method is to take a flexible mat of plastic and lay that on the workbench first. He then dumps the entire contents of the box on the plastic, sorts for the fastener he needs, then picks up the plastic mat and curves it like a ½ funnel to pour the loose fasteners back into the box. Very slick! Thanks Dave!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, February 20th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Bridget Pratt will not be there, so we need volunteers. Gary, Tom, Bill, Rod and Alan?  Will you coordinate getting the breakfast??

President John then spoke about his trip to Flabob, California to attend the EAA Chapter Leadership training. He noted the high points of this workshop focused on AEEE. Always-Entertaining-Educational-Enjoyable. Make it a “Can’t miss” function and expand to involve all the family and non-aviators. He said that successful chapters focus on: Name tags and welcoming new people, Business cards and banners (he ordered a $20 banner that is huge!!), Web Site an email, Facebook and E-Blasts of events.

He also noted that even though there are 190,000 EAA members, only 40,000 are members of a local chapter. He suggested that we all contact anyone who might be interested and let them know that they can have a 6 month free National EAA membership (with magazine!). He also suggested we think of other family activities that might interest the members and their families, such as a movie/popcorn night at the clubhouse. Thanks John for the time you spent learning how to make a successful chapter!!

He then suggested that we increase our efforts at fund raising. He suggested raising the price of breakfast, hold raffles, accept donation, sell hats and T shirts, have an airplane wash and even maybe a hangar dance. There was a brief discussion about the use of the funds, as the chapter has no big project that requires money at this time. Several people felt that the project (or dream) come first, along with the sponsor (or sparkplug) who will see it through, before we begin raising money in earnest. Walt Weischedel had a few ideas about a project that the club might want to start, and was willing to be that sparkplug, so we will discuss this at the next meeting in March.

John also wanted to open up the possibility that the club get 501-C-3 status with the IRS in order to accept donation that could be a tax write off. He will pursue this idea and report back. He also wanted anyone with speaker ideas, or meeting ideas to mention them to him. Gary Ludeke reported that the chapter had a Facebook page at one time, and will see about the details on reviving this activity.

There being no other business, we ran a short video on Spitfire 944’s crash and subsequent documentary film. It was great to see the old footage and to hear from the surviving pilot all about the aerial reconnaissance that was done from England during WW-II.

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:24 PM
respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Minutes from 11/4/2015 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, November 4th, 2015

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by the wonderful Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There was angel hair spaghetti with meat sauce, French bread, salad and Bridget’s wonderful brownies and a drink for only $5. She is such a great cook; don’t miss the next meeting (she promised to cook the main courses for the Christmas dinner!!)

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Gary Ludeke, with Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. There were 17 members and guests in attendance.

The meeting as normal started with the pledge of allegiance, followed by a Creswell Chronical article showing our own Jim Beale with a paint stripping machine working on the Creswell runway. He explained that several of our guys (Bill Dewey, Jim Beale, Gary Ludeke, Tom Cunningham and Charlie Walker) helped with the stripping and were much appreciated by Shelly Humble.

President Gary noted that the water is off due to a coliform finding on a recent sample taken. Daves’ widow has been kind enough to allow us to continue with the water, and it is her wishes that the new owners do likewise. We will approach them with a plate of brownies and a smile and hope that they will be as neighborly as Dave. (P.S. The water has tested out Good, so it is back on for the Christmas dinner and all future events!!)

Gary noted that the club can order EAA Calendars, if we have the demand for at least 10 of them. A call for hands did not find such demand in attendance. We will try to assess interest with an email invitation to order if desired.

President Gary then spoke about the RV-3 project. Dave Eason is done with the engine mount (he found a bar stool that fit almost perfectly!) The project is moving along well, and Gary contacted Van’s for some help on the upcoming paint job. The response from Scott Reson was very good, with their help assured. We now need to determine where the plane will be painted, with Rusty Bartel, John Stahr and Kyle (in Steve Wolf’s old hangar) as possibilities. The final plan is make a presentation of the aircraft at the Oregon Aviation Historical Society with Van in attendance this summer.

Bill Dewey purchased a flag pole, and installed it (with lights) to fly all day and night. He will landscape the area with rocks (per his plan). He was thanked by all for making such a nice addition to the Honor Garden area. Bill also manned a booth at a Girl Scout event, hoping to interest them in EAA and the YE program. Alan Weider is coordinating with him to get his 10 YE’s this year. Thanks Bill and Alan!!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, November 21st. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Bridget Pratt said that she would not be there, so she asked again for volunteers. Gary, Tom, Bill and Alan will coordinate getting the breakfast going. Thanks to everyone who makes this special time a priority.

Secretary Stout then noted that we still need nominations for Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer. He suggested that any who would be willing to serve in this capacity (and as President in 2 years as is our custom), please make this known to him or another officer of the club. If you are going to nominate someone else, please ask them first if they would accept, and if so, feel free to bring their name forward at the next meeting. We will discuss the nominations in December, and (if any are found) a vote will be taken then.

The first duty of the incoming President (John Kuehl) will be to co-ordinate the Christmas party with Chapter 1457. To that end, it has been decided that we will have a joint Chapter 31 and 1457 party at the Creswell Clubhouse on December 5th at 6:00 for a social hour and 7:00 for the meal. The meal will consist of Prime Rib and Chicken, which will be provided for by the 2 Chapters, and the balance to be Pot Luck from the members. Names starting from A-H will bring a Side dish, I-P will bring a salad and Q-Z will bring a dessert. Yes, you can jump lists if you make a certain great dish and it doesn’t fit you name. Cost will be $5 (to defray the main dish cost), and a Pot Luck item. If you are batching it and can’t bring an item, just add another $5 to the pot. (And don’t everyone batch it!!) See you there!!

It was noted by Frenchy that the Oregon Air and Space Museum at the Eugene airport will be having a big band fund raiser on 11/8 at 4:00PM. (Sorry these minutes came after the event!)

There being no other business, Gary presented the EAA National chapter newsletter video that had a nice segment on Glider acrobatics.

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:05?? Pm (I had to leave before the video)
respectfully submitted,
Randall Stout
Secretary/Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from 10/7/2015 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 7th, 2015
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by the wonderful Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There were hamburgers, Costco hot dogs, chips, Bridget’s wonderful chili, cookies and a drink for only $5. As always, I ate too much!!

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Gary Ludeke, with V.P. John Kuehl and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout also present. There were 20 members and guests in attendance.

Before the pledge of allegiance, President Gary asked everyone for a moment of silence to remember Hal and Milo Skinner. After the Pledge, one guest in attendance raised his hand. We hosted Casey Baker, an old South Eugene Classmate of mine(actually one year ahead). He is building a Zenith 750 and has some machine shop connections (he works for Cascade Plating and Machine). Welcome Casey, hope to see you at all the meetings!

President Gary then read the NTSB preliminary report on the Skinner accident. Discussion followed on how this may have been prevented, but no one knew the exact reason for the accident, so no conclusions were made on this particular crash.

He then noted that the Aurora airport will have a tower for much of the day starting on October 15th. Frequencies are TWR-120.35, GND- 119.15, ATIS- 118.525. He also noted that the new Creswell AWOS will be on 119.275 when it begins operation, slated for the end of November.

The next topic was the very sudden and unexpected change in airspace around the Salem Airport. The expanded Class D airspace puts Independence and many other smaller fields in a bad position for airplane operations. AOPA stepped into this matter, and it appears that the FAA is now ready to modify it again, this time with input from the stakeholders on the ground.

Secretary Stout then mentioned that we have a new toilet in one of our restrooms (thanks to Alan Weiders handiness), and with membership approval, will order a 2nd one. The primary reason is saving on water, and reliability (in the past, the valve has stuck and the water was running all night). He noted that past member Dave Heisley’s house is for sale, and the club has benefited from Dave’s generosity with the water from his well. We would like to be a good neighbor to the new owners and make sure that our water using appliances are up to date and reliable.

The Honor Garden was the next item of discussion. Dave Eason put in 7 new engraved bricks, and took it upon himself to clean up and landscape a lot of the area, and put in brick circles. Thanks Dave from everyone!! Bill Dewey wants the club to purchase a flag pole, and install it with lights to fly all day and night. He was asked to come up with a budget and we will review and probably approve this addition. Thanks Bill!

Speaking of membership activity outside of the meetings and meals, a fine group of volunteers consisting of Bill Dewey, Jim Beale, Gary Ludeke, Tom Cunningham and Charlie Walker helped Shelly Humble with painting of the runway stripes. This is a huge job, not yet complete, but many thousands of square feet have been painted. Thanks from all the pilots who use Creswell Airport!!

It was noted that member Ray Morse finally got his Acroduster into the air after an astonishing 42 years work (interrupted many time as you might expect) First flight took place on 10/3 with Shaun Van Hatten at the controls. It flew well with only a few minor squawks. Congratulations Ray!!

President Gary then spoke about the RV-3 project. Alan Weider has been working on the Horizontal Stabilizer. Virgil Pratt is now working on the Canopy. Dave Eason is getting the welding done on the engine mount (what else does Dave do except club projects??!!) The project is moving along well, and Gary will contact Van’s for some help on the upcoming paint job.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, October 17th.

President Gary then noted that he has printed out an article he found on the Cessna Birddog and its work in Vietnam.

Secretary Stout then noted that we need to open the nominations for Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer. He suggested that any who would be willing to serve in this capacity (and as President in 2 years as is our custom), please make this known to him or another officer of the club. If you are going to nominate someone else, please ask them first if they would accept, and if so, feel free to bring their name forward at the next meeting. We will discuss the nominations in November, and a vote will be taken then. The first duty of the incoming President (John Kuehl) and new VP will be to co-ordinate the Christmas party with Chapter 1457.

There being no other business, President Gary asked Ray Morse to show some videos of his airplanes first flight and landing. After a few technical glitches, we got a nice show. Thanks again Ray!!

There being no other business, Gary presented the EAA National chapter video magazine.

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:56 pm
respectfully submitted, Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Sep 04

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, September 2nd, 2015
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by the wonderful Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There was “all you can eat” Corn on the Cob, hamburgers, Costco hot dogs, chips, Bridget’s wonderful brownies and a drink for only $5. Thanks again for making this wonderful meal!!

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Gary Ludeke, with V.P. John Kuehl and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout also present. There were 26 members and guests in attendance.

After the pledge of allegiance, President Gary asked the guests in attendance to raise their hands. John “Frenchie” Marcel showed his new EAA National card, and is going to join the local at the first of the year, and Steve Didman, a student of Gary Ludeke’ s was in attendance again along with Larry Lowencron, Creswell Airport Commission member (here for Lauran Paine’s talk). Welcome to all and we hope you come again!

Secretary Stout then spoke about the bricks for the Honor Garden that he has ordered for Shelly Humble, the South Lane Modelers and the Chapter. He noted that Polar Engraving has a $20 up charge for less than 5 of one size, so he called around and Doug Kindred stepped up and got 2 small bricks, which saved us the $20 charge. They are on order (and paid for) so they should be here in about 2 weeks.

President Gary then spoke about the RV-3 project. It was in his hangar for easier access and tools, but has returned to the clubhouse, as much of the work is now done. It now has a cowling from Van’s installed and Jim Beale is still working on the tail wheel. Ray Morse is working on the bigger parts. Alan Weider has been working on the Horizontal Stabilizer. Virgil Pratt is now working on the Fuselage and Canopy. Gary still needs someone to start on the Windshield. Thanks to you all for keeping this project moving along.

A quick discussion ensued about the club buying new toilets in order to keep from having any problems with the old ones malfunctioning and creating a water supply problem. It was agreed to look into getting one to two new toilets, with one being a somewhat taller unit to accommodate our less nimble members. Highly enjoyable material to debate!!

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, September 19th. It was decided that a breakfast committee made up of Gary, Rod, Tom and Dave will coordinate getting the breakfast going, and that Bridget and Virgil will make a list of supplies that they will check against stock and replenished as needed. Thanks to everyone who makes this special time a priority.

Larry Lowencron then rose and spoke about the upcoming “Pilots Bill of Rights” legislation in the works. He has made a petition and asked to pass it around for signatures. He did so and he will send it on with our comments and concerns.

There being no other business, President Gary introduced our speaker of the night, Lauran Paine Jr., monthly column contributor to EAA’s National magazine, Sport Aviation (see:Plane Talk).

Lauran gave a very fun talk about some of the stories he has heard, and been part of, during his long aviation career. He flew Airline, Military and Sport aviation, and had stories from each phase of his flying. He offered to the group his book of pithy aviation sayings and words of advice, and I believe he sold out after his talk. Thanks, Lauran, for a great time!! If you missed him, you really missed a class act!!

There being no other business, Gary decided to put off the chapter Video until a later time so that people could talk with Lauren.

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:16 pm
respectfully submitted, Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Meeting Minutes from the 8/5/2015 Meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, August 5th, 2015
The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by the wonderful Virgil and Bridget Pratt. There was Corn on the Cob, hamburgers, Costco hot dogs, chips and a drink for only $5. Another triumph in culinary excellence!!

The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Gary Ludeke, with V.P. John Kuehl and Secretary / Treasurer Randy Stout also present. There were 23 members and guests in attendance.

After the pledge of allegiance, President Gary asked the guests in attendance to raise their hands. We hosted John “Frenchie” Marcel, a 24 year Flight Engineer veteran with 2 tours of Vietnam, and the current District 13 VFW Chaplain, and member of Post 3965 VFW. He is a private pilot and has flown many airplanes since very early (did I hear 10 years old?) in his life. We also recognized Paul Lauer, a friend of Ray Morse, Steve Didman, a student of Gary Ludeke’ s, Bruce Gustafson, Chapter 1457 representative (see his request in the minutes in a bit), and Larry Lowencron, Creswell Airport Commission member (here for the ADS-B info talk). Welcome to all and we hope you come again!

President Gary then spoke about the RV-3 project. It is now in his hangar for easier access and tools, and now has a cowling coming from Van’s. Jim Beale is working on the tail wheel. Ray Morse will blast the bigger parts. Alan Weider has been working on the Horizontal Stabilizer. Virgil Pratt is now working on the Fuselage and Canopy. Thanks to you all for keeping this project on the front burner.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, August, 15th, which is coincidental with the RV fly-in at Independence. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $5 for an all you can eat breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Bridget Pratt said that she would not be there, so she asked for volunteers. No one immediately raised their hand, but hopefully we will have a full crew on Saturday. Otherwise, we might go hungry!

Randy has called Shelly Humble to find out about the bricks she said she will be ordering for Jug and Crash. He has not had a return call at this time. We want to get the Dave Heisley and South Lane Modelers bricks ordered and installed ASAP.

Speaking of the Honor Garden, Doug Kindred and Bill Dewey have put in the sprinkler system to keep the plants alive during the summer. That was a lot of work with ditches and piping etc. Thanks guys, and great work!!

President Gary then spoke about our Young Eagles event that took place on July 4th. We gave 96 Young Eagles the ride of their lives, along with 5 CAP members. Great work by everyone involved, especially the ground crew. The pilots had the fun, but the ground crew had to handle a lot of detail work to make that happen. Special thanks to Ken Schmidt, the air boss who also gave the pilot briefing for all the YE and Parade Pilots. He made sure that the qualifications necessary to be a YE pilot were enforced, and we all stayed safe and legal!!

Tom Preuss, longtime EAA Chapter 31 friend, announced that due to health he will be unable to continue to fly. He is going donate his airplane to the Museum and to have a hangar sale (to be announced to the group when the date is set), and has offered a few items as a donation to Chapter 31. Thanks Tom, and don’t be a stranger. We can always use more ground crew.

Gary noted that at the September meeting, author Lauren Paine will give a talk. If you have read Lauren’s monthly articles in Sport Aviation, you know that you don’t want to miss this meeting!

Bruce Gustafson, a chapter 1457 member, mentioned that 1457 will have their YE flying day on August 29th at Eugene Airport. It will be held along with the “5K on the Runway” and pancake breakfast. They would love to have some Chapter 31 pilots join them (just as he helped with our July 4th event)

Alan Weider was then asked to come forward and give his Power Point Presentation on ADS-B. He had so much to say that I am sure I would do him a disservice attempting to put it all down here. Suffice to say, if you are flying in class A, B or C airspace that requires a transponder, you will need to have an ADS-B capable unit by 2020. Thanks Alan for a very thorough and enjoyable presentation (even when the computer malfunctioned!!)

There being no other business, President Gary suggested we view the Chapter Video next month, as we were running a bit late tonight.

The meeting was then adjourned at 8:26 pm
respectfully submitted, Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer
