Meeting Minutes from the 9/7/2022 meeting

Meeting Minutes from the 9/7/2022 meeting.

President Rod Johnson, V.P. Eric Farry and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout as officers were present when the Meeting started at 7:05 PM at the clubhouse in Creswell. There were 14 Members and guests in attendance. Ben Grubb from Eugene Chapter 1457 and our speaker Dave Ullman were our guests.

Dinner was prepared by President Rod Johnson, Past President, Pat Dodson and Bill Dewey and consisted of Burgers, Hot Dogs, leaf salads, Chips, Cookies and a drink- for $8.00!! Next month we may be having another Costco Casserole, so watch your emails for notice.

President Rod Johnson called the meeting to order. He asked for any old business:

Pat Dodson gave a brief report on the runway work being done by Wildish. They won’t be tearing up the runway until next week but have been prepping the site all this week. There was no impact to the clubhouse or parking for the meeting.

Remember our monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We need members to help make the fixings.  Walt Weischedel will bring his eggs and Bill Dewey will check on the rest of the supplies. The next breakfast will be on September 17th at the clubhouse starting at 9:00. Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Juice or Coffee for $8- a bargain!! See you there!!

The checkbook balance is now $1576.83

Doug Kindred gave a quick report on the just past Great Oregon Homebuilt fly-in at Cottage Grove. Lots of nice planes including Kevin Miller who brought in the new Van’s RV-14. Food truck was awesome and will be invited back. It was also noted that the WAM Fly-in in Hood River will be this weekend. Might be a windy event so be very careful and go early if you decide to go by air.

Gary Ludeke then rose to ask the group if he could hold his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award ceremony at the November meeting. Everyone agreed that this would be a great plan. The meeting will be on the 2nd of November, which is one day after Gary turns 80 and becomes a flying Octogenarian. A great guy and worthy recipient of this award!

There was a brief discussion about the recent tragic crash of Dennis and Amy Jackson near Scio in their RV-8. It appears they may have been doing low level aerobatics over their relatives houses. Let’s wait for the full report before jumping to conclusions.

There being no other business, President Johnson introduced our speaker for the evening, Dave Ullman and his presentation “The future of electric airplanes”. Dave is a retired professor, aeronautical engineer and designer and has a real desire to work on lifting properties of directed fans over wing sections. He has in the past built a Velocity airplane and recently purchased a wrecked Jabiru which he repaired and then added several ducted fans to the leading edge. He is calling this modified aircraft a Jabirwatt.

He is a member of EAA 292 in Independence (Meeting this Saturday at 9:00). Their members have a full sized DH-2 with a VW engine and the only flying Bristol Bulldog in the country. He has been working with Barnaby Wayne (of Kit Plane renown) on various designs which he hopes to refine in the near future. His graph on EVTOL aircraft design and the way that they are evolving was fascinating. He gave a great presentation about where electric aircraft are today and the potential futures for them. It seems that battery power is the limiting factor and will be for the foreseeable future. He believes that battery power is increasing at a rate of about 8% per year but will take a decade or two to reach the milestone needed to make electric aircraft viable. He believes that helicopters and most IC engine aircraft will all but disappear when this happens. Thanks Dave!! Great presentation.

There being no other business the meeting was adjourned at 8:15PM

Respectfully submitted,

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer

Just a reminder that we are having our September meeting next Wednesday, 09/07/2022 at 7:00pm

David Ullman,, Emeritus Professor, Oregon State University will be our presenter. The subject will be “The Future of Electric Airplanes”. I’m sure that he wouldn’t mind answering other questions regarding aviation that people might have.

We will be having dinner at 6:00pm, so come early and visit.

Meeting is at the EAA chapter 31 club house at the south end of the airport. The contractor working on the airport (Wildish) will be removing the old runway and spreading the grindings on the gravel roadways. Meeting Minutes from the 8/3/2022 meeting

Meeting Minutes from the 8/3/2022 meeting.

President Rod Johnson, V.P. Eric Farry and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout as officers were present when the Meeting started at 7:25 PM at the clubhouse in Creswell. There were 14 Members in attendance. Late start due to dinner not being quite ready on time, but it was well worth the wait!

Dinner was prepared by President Rod Johnson, Past President, Pat Dodson and Bill Dewey and consisted of a nice lasagna, French bread, leaf salads, Chips, Cookies and a drink- for $8.00!! Next month we may be having another Costco Casserole, so watch your emails for notice.

President Rod Johnson called the meeting to order. He asked for any old business:

Our airport manager, Shelly Humble made an entrance and gave us her report on the building activity that will be occurring this fall on the runway. It will be closed from August 29th to September 28th (although that date has probably changed too) There will not be any billing to hangar tenants during this time. The emergency generators that the airport has ordered are now here, installed and tested. She has several grants that will be funded this year and early next. The plan is to construct another row or two of T hangars, 2 new taxi lanes and have a bathroom in the building. They are receiving bids on a wastewater treatment plant (now on a hold for bids) for the new bathrooms. She has also been approached to host a wings and wheels show during the closure of the airport. Not sure that will work yet, so keep watching for updates.

Remember our monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We need members to help make the fixings.  Walt Weischedel will bring his eggs and Bill Dewey will check on the rest of the supplies. The next breakfast will be on August 20th at the clubhouse starting at 9:00. Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Juice or Coffee for $8- a bargain!! See you there!!

The checkbook balance is now $1684.60

It was noted that the Stearman Fly-In will be Saturday the 6th at Cottage Grove. Also, Labor Day weekend will see the Great Oregon Homebuilt Fly-In also at Cottage Grove.

There being no other business, President Johnson adjourned the meeting and everyone went out to look at Randy’s new (to him) Super Cub, then over to Walt Weischedel’s hangar to look at the progress he and Alan Weider are making on finalizing the build on his RV-12.

There being no other business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30PM

Meeting Minutes from the 7/5/2022 Meeting

Meeting Minutes from the 7/5/2022 meeting.

President Rod Johnson, V.P. Eric Farry and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout as officers were present when the Meeting started at 6:59 PM at the clubhouse in Creswell. There were 15 Members in attendance. Former Guest John Parker (former airline pilot and now builder of an RV-8) has become the newest Chapter 31 Member. Welcome to all!!

Dinner was prepared by President Rod Johnson, Past President Pat Dodson and Paul Beuhler, and consisted of Hot Dogs and Hamburgers, fruit and leaf salads, Chips, Cookies and a drink- for $8.00!! Next month we may be having another Costco Casserole, so watch your emails for notice.

President Rod Johnson called the meeting to order. He asked for any old business.  The YE event just concluded on July 4th was the topic of conversation and critique. The club made preparations on July 2nd, and did it ever show! This was one of the best run YE events we have had, with over 50 YE’s flown and 10 given Rain Checks for a future flight at our next breakfast meeting. Between Rod Johnson, Shelly Humble and Mai Messer (along with all the other volunteers) we had a safe and I am sure, very memorable day for both the pilots and the kids.

Thanks to Bill Dewey, who did not fly but acted as Air Boss and was generous enough to loan Gary Ludeke his 172 when the 172 that Gary was flying had an electrical malfunction. An much thanks to the ground crew of Don, Mat, Jason, Rod (and I know I am forgetting someone) for making the smooth transition from one rider to another. Everyone believes that the Saturday meeting before the event was the reason everything went so well (along with almost perfect weather!!) Next year improvements include having a cone placed with a Letter on it so that the YE’s know where to stay until their number is called, and signs to place in front of the waiting folks that say “Do not touch the airplanes unless the pilot OK’s it” and “Stay away from aircraft on startup”. We should also put up more snow fence to keep people from wandering over to the open hangars, and we could use a few more spare runners (who couldn’t!)

Then our airport manager, Shelly Humble made an entrance and gave us her report on the building activity that will be occurring this fall on the runway. It will be closed from August 15th to September 28th. There will not be any billing to hangar tenants during this time. The emergency generators that the airport has ordered are now here and about to be installed. She has several grants that will be funded this year and early next. The plan is to construct another row of T hangars and have a bathroom in the building. She noted that we had 82 Pre-Registered YE’s and 44 walk-ins. Thanks Shelly as always

We have started our monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Therefore, we need members to help make the fixings.  Walt Weischedel will bring his eggs and Bill Dewey will check on the rest of the supplies. The next breakfast will be on July 16th at the clubhouse starting at 9:00. Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Juice or Coffee for $8- a bargain!! We will be flying the Rain Check YE’s, so everyone who is qualified should bring their airplane. See you there!!

The checkbook balance is now $1697.52 so we are gaining a bit now that we are having breakfast again.

There being no other business, President Johnson introduced former member Allen Weider, (Chapter 1457 member now), who gave a great presentation on re-building an RV-9 that he acquired. He had already built an RV-8 and RV-12 so he thought this might be pretty quick. Boy was he wrong! Almost everything on the airplane needed to be re-done. He spent an enormous amount of time and effort and was finally able to finish it and sell it. Thanks for the great slides of the before and after. He is quite a craftsman!

There being no other business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30PM

Randall Stout, Secretary/ Treasurer
