Meeting Minutes from the 11/6/2019 meeting

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, November 6th , 2019

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Bill Dewey. There were HUGE Hamburgers, Hot Dogs (big and small), salad, chips, cookies for desert and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss their next great meal!! Thanks Bill for the great help and Rod and Paul for cooking!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:45 PM by President John Kuehl with V.P. Gary Ludeke and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 12 members and guests in attendance. Checkbook balance was $4000.17 as of the date of the meeting.

Next Chapter breakfast is Saturday, November 16th. Come out to the clubhouse in the AM and pay $8 for an “all you can eat” breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, OJ, coffee and camaraderie!! Starts at 9:00 and runs to about 10:30 or so. Our volunteers for this breakfast are (hopefully) the same group as last time Tom, Bill, Rod and John, who will coordinate getting the breakfast ready to serve. Thanks in advance guys!

Elections were then held for chapter officers for the next 2 years. Voted in as President was Pat Dodson, VP was Rod Johnson and Secretary/Treasurer was Randy Stout. President John Kuehl will become our Young Eagle chairman.

The Christmas party was the next topic. A cleaning party will happen at the clubhouse on 12/11 at 6:00. The party (which will also include chapter 1457 members) will be at the clubhouse on 12/14 and be catered by Hole in the Wall Bar-B-Que. It will be a potluck for deserts and side dishes, so be sure to bring something with you (if you can- just come if you can’t!!). There will not be a December meeting other than the Christmas party.

The clubhouse was used for a neighborhood gathering last month when rain forced them indoors, and cleaned nicely by Gary Ludeke.

There being no other business, President John introduced Neal Lange from the Oregon Department of Forestry- Aviation Division. Neal then presented a nice slide show of the history of aviation with the department from Jenny’s to Jets.

It was 1955 that they first used retardant to fight fires, as previously they had only used airplanes as spotters. A surplus B-29 was the first “bomber” they used for this purpose. They dropped boxes of retardant with proximity fuses that blew up close to the ground with around 11,000 gallons of water in them.

Next came PBY’s then CL-250’s. The early retardents’ were very slippery and created their own set of problems.

The ODF got out of owning any airplanes in 1965. They contract now for a DC-7 and AT802 and will be contracting for a DC-10, RJ-85, MD-87, C-130 and BAE-146 along with helicopters (UH-1H, A-Star B3, MD-902 explorer, B-206 Jet ranger).

In 1973 they began using infrared detection with a Mohawk and 1991 they began rappelling down to fires. They fly on average 900 hours of forest fire protection each year, although last year they flew 2000 in 90 days. They have a master agreement with the US Forest Service in order to coordinate their activities. He also presented several videos’ of air drops of retardant as they practiced last year before the season began.

President John suggested that the newest Chapter Video this month would be a bit of a letdown after such a nice presentation, so we passed on it.

EAA 31 November 2019 Meeting Announcement.

We have 2 major events for our November meeting: GUEST SPEAKER and EAA 31 2020 ELECTIONS.
Our GUEST SPEAKER is Neal Laugle, State Aviation Manager, Oregon Dept of Forestry. Neal also serves as an Operations Branch Director for an incident Management Team. Been flying a long time and spent 6 years on an Alaska Helitack crew and a year as a member of the “Tazlina Hot Shots”. This is a guy that has lots of first hand experience fighting forest fires. You will definitely enjoy what he has to say.
EAA31 2020 NOMINATIONS/ELECTIONS. Yours truly will not be serving a 3rd two year term as EAA31 president. We need fresh blood and new ideas. Please be thinking about who among us would be best President, Vice President, Secty/Treas to lead EAA31 to “Greater Heights”.
This is happening on Wednesday November 6th 2019.

EAA Chapter 31 Meeting, October 2nd , 2019

The dinner portion of the meeting started at 6:00 PM hosted by Rod Johnson. There was Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, salad, chips, Potato Salad, cookies for desert and a drink for only $8. Don’t miss their next great meal!! Thanks Rod for the great help and Paul Buehler for cooking!

The meeting started with the pledge of allegiance at 6:59 PM by V.P. Gary Ludeke with President John Kuehl and Secretary/ Treasurer Randy Stout also present. The business and entertainment portion of the meeting was called then to order. There were 14 members and guests in attendance. Checkbook balance was $3859.77 as of the date of the meeting.

The replacement of the Creswell airport taxiways was the next topic. It is much more extensive than most of us thought.

VP Ludeke then spoke about his recent flight experiences in flying off the hours of the Les Wellington Wayex that he spoke about last month. It seems that they are experiencing fuel flow problems. After much discussion, removal of the inline filter and installation of a gascolator seemed the appropriate solution. He will report back next month.

Tom Cunningham asked to have his “airplane for sale” ad taken off the EAA 31 BLOG

Paul Buehler then spoke about his career in aviation, as a A+P/IA for the airlines until he worked for Heli-Tech manufacturing helicopter accessories. He is now building a Bearhawk B and hydroforming the ribs. He has a lot of experience and is a great new member of the club!!

Doug Kindred then noted that the Oregon Aviation Historical Museum has plans to fly 2 of the Story airplanes and the Great Lakes to Oshkosh for the Centennial Celebration of the Oregon Aviation Department, which began licensing Oregon airplanes in 1921, well before the FAA or CAA.

President John then began the showing of the newest Chapter Video this month, which highlighted the Blakesburg Antique Airplane fly in. It also had a technique lesson on using a hot wire to cut Styrofoam. Always interesting!

Bill Dewey offered to host the next meal before the meeting.

October Meeting Announcement

President John called me to say, due to family business, he may not be able to attend our October 2 meeting and asked me to handle things regarding the meeting. This is a meeting that some people might miss because it’s so near the beginning of the month that it gets overlooked. So be forewarned! John told me he thought that Rod Johnson had volunteered to head up the dinner part of the meeting, so I called Rod and am waiting for a conformation that he will be doing this. In terms of a program, Virgil and Bridget Pratt have been working for years on the restoration of a Stits Skycoup. That airplane has recently been signed off by Darrin Humble and test flown by Mark Stroble. Virgil will be bringing the airplane over to the clubhouse for all to see and will give us a summary of all the things that were done over the restoration period. He had some real setbacks but plugged along optimistically and saw the job through to completion.Congratulations, Virgil, on a job well done! The only potential issue with Virgil’s presentation is, as of this writing, he has a cough that could possibly be an indication of pneumonia. He felt, when I talked to him earlier today, that he would be in good enough shape to give the presentation but, as they say, “time will tell.”

I hope to see a lot of you on Wednesday evening!
